This has got to be the weirdest update ever, everyone on this board is getting different conflicts. Is this why Samsung took down the upgrade? I have tried 6 times and still get the same message "Please reset the device." I tried hard reseting it again...nothing. Mr Pacs, what did you do to get it to work? I read all your followup posts and it seem you just went to a different computer.
Update: Got it to finally go through the "Please reset the device" section, user image upgrade screen now said eboot has finished update. then it is stuck there...did a reset, now back to please reset the device section.
At this point I am about to brink the phone by throwing it against the wall. The upgrade for the i730 was much easier than this.
I got the open port failed message after the PDA update as well but re-ran it and it seems to have worked fine the second go round.
I am using a sync / charge cable, but its not the mini retractable one, I think its from pocket experts but not 100% certain.
The threaded SMS is total sweetness.
Ditto with mine except I was using the original cable that came with the phone. No idea why it failed the first time but it appears the programmers expect it to happen since it tells you what to do to restart the process.
I wonder if doing a hard-reset prior to attempting the upgrade might help... along with disabling WiFi, phone and bluetooth.
I decided to try the upgrade on mine first.
I did this on my XP SP2 PC.
I found that I had to run it twice... the first one gets the PDA updates.. the second time gets the phone upgraded.
I then read all the issues all you have had... was scared to try my wife's...
But, oh well, dam the torpedoes... go for it!
I updated hers on her XP sp2 Laptop.
The upgrade was identical... the first try upgraded the PDA, it quit with that Open something error.
Then the second try gets by that and finishes the phone upgrade.
Now both are upgraded!!
I haven't had any problems with Wifi, Active sync, or any of the other things that seem others of had problems with.
I think the moral of the story is... the XP version of the upgrade seems to work good.
Like a few, this update went off without a hitch. Using the Vista version and undocked laptop with the USB cable only, I followed their directions. Downloaded and updated the modem driver manually so when the update started, it recognized the necessary SW updates as complete. I also hard reset the device after unchecking the USB box in connection settings and reattaching the cord before starting Step 5. I had to resync all the Outlook and reload 3rd party programs, but much better than continually repeating steps as when I upgraded the 730 to WM5.
So an update to last night, I am running vista, on a perfect (as it can be it is microsoft laptop). I tried following the instructions to the "." however it failed at 2% (very far i know egh egh). anyways I am now a member of the waiting on fedex club, so i can get my replacement phone. how exciting . Guess VZW hasn't caught on yet..
Just found out that Samsung posting the update was a mistake. VZW told us the updater is not the right version. The firmware is the approved firmware but the actual utility is not done I guess. This would explain why Samsung has pulled it, why it isn't on VZW's site yet, and why it doesn't work so well.

Interesting about it being an apparent mistake. I called Samsung today to ask what was up and they said it got pulled because of problems but would likely be back online within a day or two. Who knows how true that is but I'm going to wait a week and see what happens.
I was ready to install that first night -- had the file on my desktop and everything -- but couldn't find my USB cable. Just found it an hour ago. Maybe it was for the best.
If anyone does this and comes up with a different version than what has already been posted, then that is what will be of interest. Right now the installer works, but it's a pain in the ass. It's reasonably "safe" to do right now, it's just a procedure. Even the official updater can in some cases brick a phone. I'm guess they'll fix it so that the phone portion updates on the first shot and there you have it.
