It appears to be a complete no-go with Vista 64bit.

The installer tells me to open and initialize the Windows Mobile Device Center. It is open, and it is connected.

I suspect this is a 64bit issue.

Any one come across this one;
upgrade started failed midway, did a emergency recover using the CLR and reset.
At this time the upgrade states "your device is upgraded already" however the “about”, and “windows version” are the same as prior to the upgrade.
The only difference is in the splash screen that starts off with a Black background, and Samsung, before it moves on to the Verizon logo.
Is there any way to get into recovery mode to get the upgrade to restart the process?

Ok, so I got the "Port Open Failed' type message. It said to reset the device and relaunch the updater.

So I did that, when I did a soft reset it did boot up and say WM 6.1, but I still launched the updater and now it is still flashing, so it's possible it was actually updated before that error, but I'm letting it go through again incase it hasn't got to the radio update yet.

2nd try, get Transffering Failed!!

Any ideas? Doing this on my vista 32 laptop.

After trying this 9 times (no joke) last night I finally got it to work. It completed the PDA part on the first try, but stopped on the Phone part. The last and final time I turned the phone portion of the device off before starting the install and it worked. Don’t know if that was the trick or if the computer just started to feel sorry for me

Last night on my first try I got a EBOOT download failure. After that my phone was bricked, one of those "stuck on clearing data" situations. I got a new phone from Verizon this morning and I am very hesitant to attempt this again. Does anyone have any idea why some phones are getting stuck?

I had a bit of a tricky issue getting the Phone part to work on the upgrade for Vista, but I finally did it.

PRE-INSTALL INFO

1. This goes without saying, but when you do this ALL programs, settings, information will be deleted and phone will be set back to factory defaults.

2. The upgrade is in three parts: first, the boot section gets upgraded and the phone resets, second the OS gets upgraded and then the phone gets upgraded

3. The upgrade will very likely take twice to complete, it seems to error out the first time for everyone. This appears to be NORMAL and EXPECTED behavior at this time, and by following the directions below you should be able to complete it.

4. It took me 10 tries to get it right, namely to get the phone portion to upgrade. Follow the steps below to the letter..

5. Still doesn't work? Make sure you have done everything. Reboot your computer, try re-downloading the file and then taking your computer off the internet again, or simply try it a couple of times. Also for some reason, disabling Norton actually caused it to FAIL for me, so keep this in mind if it's erroring out each time and you have disabled your antivirus/firewall. Try another USB port if you haven't done this, but ONLY between attempts.

6. If your install errors out, do not panic. Try resetting the phone. If the phone won't boot, hold CLR + right soft key + power to get phone into emergency mode and try the install again.

INSTALL INFO

The steps:

1. Use ORIGINAL OEM cable plugged DIRECTLY into the computer.

2. Stop all running programs, get rid of all unnecessary apps in your taskbar by the clock, and UNPLUG or otherwise completely disconnect your computer from the Internet (don't ask my why, but this seems to work)

3. Perform hard reset on the phone first - turn phone off, hold center action button turn phone on

4. Setup device to sync with WMDC, make sure it shows as Connected.

5. Run upgrade
5a. Upgrade should detect phone and reboot it
5b. Upgrade will ask you to disable USB connections on WMDC
5c. You must reboot the device

6. Upgrade runs, but mine would always stop at the Port Open Failed on the computer when it came time to upgrade the phone portion, and "Starting Phone Download" or something similar on the phone. This would basically upgrade the OS, but not the Phone portion.

7. Close upgrade program, reset phone and re-enable USB connections on WMDC (this is important! If you don't re-enable USB on WDMC, the upgrade program will not be able to detect the phone!)

8. Run the Upgrade program again
8a. Upgrade should detect phone and reboot it
8b. Upgrade will ask you to disable USB connections on WMDC
8c. You must reboot the device

9. This time, when you get to the point where it says "Phone Download Started" you won't see the phone display change again but the computer will say "WRITING IMAGE" and such and the progress bar should continue to 100%

10. Afterwards, please verify upgrade was successful by going to Settings --> System --> Version
10a. PDA should read S:i760.07.V.BD14.19202
10b. Phone should read S:i760.07.V.BD14
10c. EBOOT should read 02.00
10d. H/W Version should read H:i760.07.V.Q

Now then, a couple of times I got an error that transfer failed, but I was able to reset phone and restart process safely. I did so at least 10 times last night trying to get the Phone portion to upgrade.

It is SAFE to do this so long as you follow the steps above on a stable system. If your XP or Vista installation is f'd up and full of adware/spyware and have no less than 3,000 WAREZ OMGLOL then **DO NOT** use that computer to do this! If your computer crashes or you unplug your phone during the upgrade you will almost certainly brick it. But if you are careful and follow common sense it is a safe and easy procedure. Figure about 1/2 hour or so from start to finish.

just to share info - i had the same problem mr pacs had way back on the first page (install program not recognizing that the phone had rebooted).

what i ended up doing was removing the sync cable and plugging it into a different usb port on the same computer, then running the install program again. worked fine for me.

i had to do this for a couple of things, so if the software seems to not be seeing your phone anymore, try using a different usb port. might be enough to get it to look and recognize it is there!

It failed for me 8 or so times on my work laptop. I already had ActiveSync installed and some modem drivers installed for the 760, not sure if they were the same version or not.

I finally went to a fresh desktop (XP), installed ActiveSync 4.5 then ran the updater.. the updater added the modem drivers for me. The update still failed the first time at the phone part, but the 2nd time it worked no problem.

I then took my buddy's 760 this am to that same machine and ran the upgrade. Failed the first time on the phone part and worked the 2nd time. So weird.

I had the upgrade work with no issues the first time so I count myself lucky.....

What did iratate the bejeebees out of me is that I did a full Sprite backup prior, and now cannot restore it. It goes through the entire restore process but then fails on the 'system settings' restore phase so I get all the data and programs, but none of the system regristry stuff so all the programs are missing config settings and registration/authorization keys and such.

I used all the possible combinatiions of settings for device, rom, replace, merge, overwrite DBs ....

Anybody else having this issue? What did I do wrong?

I would plan on reinstalling all of your programs for a "clean" installation. WM 6.1 has some structural changes and so it may not be the best idea to try to paste a backup of 6.0 on top of it. Whatever you can sync with WMDC should carry back over, but for the rest of it make sure you have the installation files handy.

Cool My experience...

Well my upgrade experience SUCKED!!

Details..

I ran the upgrade tool and did the reboot after driver was installed.

Then did the USB connect option under the windows Mobile Sync and then the uncheck option after than.

Phone when into Download Mode and began Clearing Data...

Upgrade tool crashed inside Vista(32-bit) with following error:

Faulting application UDL.exe, version 3.0.0.7, time stamp 0x48366764, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x4791a7a6, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0006a78c, process id 0x16a4, application start time 0x01c8e6674d4b5ebe.

I tried to re-launch upgrade application with no luck. It doesn't see the phone.

Stuck... Gonna try to soft-reset device.. its been over 30 minutes in this mode

here goes...

Phone went through normal start up screens.. Verizon then Windows Mobile screen..

Seems very slow on this part...

Phone has done a hard reset... GRRRRR but it is not a Brick yet...

Round #2
Software upgrade reset phone as before..
Unchecked Allow USB connections as directed..
Soft-reset phone as directed...
Application sat for a long time and did not see phone after soft-reset
2nd soft-reset..
application still did not see phone...
Closed application

Round #3
Phone detected this time..
Got Stuck at clearing data again...
Another hard reset...

round #4
I'm getting good at hitting that little red reset button now..
Software detected and reset phone

Round #5
I just love hard-resets!!

Round #6
I know I shouldn't really be doing this at 4am.. but still... it shouldn't be this HARD!!!

Round #7 & 8
More hard resets...

Round #9
FINALLY PDA upgrades to 6.1 but no Phone

Round #10
Failed again with another Hard reset, but this time into 6.1...

Round #11 (6am)
Finally Phone upgrades
Application says it FAILED again..

But Firmware Version shows correct numbers for PDA and PHONE..

I'm not gonna try again with the application, I got what I wanted, but it sucked!!

jismail: It seems like it might be a bad idea to try to do a backup restore to a new(ish) OS. I would just reinstall everything from scratch.

NEVER restore and old backup to a newly upgraded OS... BAD things will happen!!!

You will in veritably overwrite some upgraded information.

Just my 2c

I went ahead and reinstalled from scratch. the only reason I was trying it is because Sprite says it has a merge function made just for this type of upgrade and is supposed to allow you to do this without causing issues.... obviously it doesnt work so I would not expect to restore so you need to review your original programs and jot down any reg key info you may need on the new install if you dont have it handy

I got a big problem here....

After installing the update, my phone capability is always disabled and when I try to turn it back on in the Wireless Manager, it makes me wait for a few seconds and then nothing happens. Any advice? If for some reason it's unfixable, think my insurance covers this sort of thing??

Try a hard reset.
