I knew nothing of this thread until I bricked my i760. Here's my situation now.

I called Verizon yesterday to report the bricking due to a failed 6.1 update. The rep said someone would call me today to give me options for a new phone.

No call; so I called Verizon back. I got a new rep who was very helpful. She said that there were no i760's in stock. It is interesting that there were no i760's on their website, either. So she asked me to pull up the website and pick a phone if I wanted to. I went ahead and asked for the xv6800; I still want the keyboard so I skipped the 6900...not sure if I'll regret that or not. Incidentally, I've gone through an xv6700, an i730, and 2 i760s; the original xv6700 that I have still works as my backup and I'm using it now pending the delivery of the new xv6800. They asked what accessories I had bought for the i760; I told them a car charger (probably more than that, but not a huge deal)...she said she'd ship one with the xv6800 as long as I shipped the i760's car charger back.

The difference between the two phones is negligible to me; I liked the front keypad of the i760 and I'm sure I'll miss it a bit, but I should be okay. I'm about 7 mos out from new every 2 anyway.

So their service was fine for me, but if you were wanting an i760 in exchange (today at least) you'd have been SOL.

I'm considering upgrading to WM61 to hopefully resolve bugs & hang-ups I get w/ WM60.

I'll have to re-do my settings from scratch so instead of having to hunt through a bunch of screens and write-them down, I was wondering if there was some program that would automatcially generate a list of settings? (Then I'd use this list to manually re-do the settings)

I'm talking about settings for built-in MS software: Windows, Outlook, PIE, etc. I've installed practically no 3rd-party apps.

TIA!

Another sucessfull upgrade.........with hiccups. The phone did lock up the first time when it got to the phone upgrade. I reset phone and redid the upgrade to get it to complete the whole thing. Seems like the locking up after the os upgrade going into the phone upgrade is a common problem.

I was trying to follow Ender519's instructions, but decided to try skipping the hard-reset step, and go with my current ActiveSync connection setup.

But I couldn't get past the green "Detected" notice. Is it b/c I didn't do the hard-reset? Did all of you have to do a hard-reset?

I also read the Samsung upgrade instructions (FAQ) and they are quite different, e.g. they say to change "Internal data call" to "Modem through USB".

This made me even more confused as to which method to use. I'm giving up for the night... ugh. OS upgrades like this is where single-vendor solutions like Blackberry are just better/easier.

I'm having second thoughts about doing WM61 upgrade. Why?

1. I was mainly looking for stability/reliability improvements and it's not clear to me how much of that WM61 really has.

2. WM61 upgrade process is clearly not very smooth and there's some risk of bricking phone.

3. If I did have to replace my phone the i760 seems to be end-of-life (VZW said they have no more left) so they might force me to take an Audiovox 6800 (which I never really liked)

4. I'm now thinking it's probably smarter to just do a hard-reset of WM60, reload my s'ware/settings on the old OS and see if that helps my stability. (VZW suggested that as step1 also)

Anyone care to weigh in on my thinking?

Also, is doing "Clear All Data" from Phone->Options equivalent to doing a hard-reset?

Thanks! ... if anybody still reads this forum.

Hi! Sorry...many are now preoccupied with MR3...this particular forum was created for MR2 (which was the initial release of WM6.1).

My experience -- def worth going to 6.1. While it does not fix all of the flaws that it claims to (e.g., BT multi-connect), it does present a few things that folks have found handy. Threaded SMS comes to mind (though I personally don't use that), enhanced accessibility to Exchange/OWA (which I do use) also, a few more that are posted somewhere in this long forum. My personal experience is that the "not waking from idle" issue has vanished since I upgraded to MR2...but others report differently.

The risk of bricking is indeed real (as it is with any upgrade on any device) -- the reports are mixed, but it seems (IMHO -- YMMV) consistent that if one really follows the instructions perfectly to the letter and is very very patient, it will go through without difficulty. Also, many (including me) have found that a hard reset both before and after the update improves the chances of a less painful update process. Suggestion -- before starting the update, have all relevant posts in this entire forum (not just this thread) handy for any hints and tricks that others have used to get through it.

Recent reports are that VZW has reversed the i760 recall -- MR3 fixes the major issue that exists with newer i760's, so they are once again providing them as replacements and/or new devices (according to reports...no personal experience with that from my world).

A hard reset of any PDA is always a good idea. It is tedious if you have lots of customizations, but it does seem to cause the device to run smoother...but, in my experience, only for a short while; sluggishness returns pretty quick. One would hope that the updates address these things. So far, only so-so (in my experience).

I think that a "Clear All Data" only does that -- it does not reset the device back to factory fresh condition (as a hard reset does). I may be wrong, though...

So, I guess I'd suggest doing the update -- but, to MR3...no point in going to MR2 at this point. The problem we are having with MR3 is that neither Sammy nor VZW have actually released the correct information as to all of what is contained in MR3...anecdotaly, we know that it addresses the MEID issue for newer devices...but we are hopeful that they did more than just that in this release...but the update notes they have released still show only the stuff for MR2...so we are left with only our forum members experiences.

Best!

Hey, thanks for replying at such length! But...

Huh, MR3? MR2? What's all that about?

I thought there was just one officially available version of WM61 for the i760. Is that wrong? Are there several versions?

I also don't know about an i760 recall. Was that official? Is that why the VZW lady I spoke w/ yesterday said it was in "phase out" status?

She also told me to do a hard-reset by way of "Clear All Data". But that sounded a little less than a hard-reset to me, which is what you seem to think to. Others care to confirm?

Lastly, my phone is about 1 year old (Nov'07)... does that make it one of the "newer devices" you say there were problems with?

UGH. Sorry for all the questions, but your posting really opened up new issues that I didn't even have a clue about.

I'm holding off on any upgrades until this is settled. In the meantime, I may or may not do a hard-reset back to WM60... if I'm willing to take the time reloading & reconfiguring.

Go see http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/samsu...e-release.html for information on an update to the Windows 6.1 patch that Samsung released. You get it at the same place as MR2. They just updated the package. There is not yet a list of what all is changes in the MR3 package.

I believe the instructions for a hard reset are in the original thread for the Windows 6.1 update.

Question WM6.1 Install Woes

Greetings,

Today I ran the 6.1 upgrade for my SCHi760. The install went off without any problems however, I don't believe it upgraded.

Before the upgrade my software version was:
S:1760.07 V.AH08.17233

After the Upgrade it is:
PDA: S:i760.07 V.BJ10.19202
Phone: S:i760.07 V.BJ10
Eboot: 02.00

It would appear the the upgrade worked however, things don't look much different and I've read several posts indicating that the PDA and Phone versions should be S:1760.07.vBD10.19202. At any rate, when I attempt to run the resinstall it tells me my phone is already upgraded and that the install package doesn't support reinstalls. Has anyone ran across this and if so what can I do to resolve?

Thanks,
Levi

Levi, I'm certainly no expert on this, but I think you ARE upgraded. Based on what I read on the other thread about the latest MR3 version of WM61, BJ10 is the latest.

And just out of curiosity did you follow Ender519's steps (earlier in this thread) or the steps from Samsung.com's FAQ?

(I'm wondering if anyone has had success doing it the Samsung way or if Ender519's instructions are the only way to go.)

Re: WM6.1 Install Woes

Hi Northbank,

I used the instructions on the Samsung website to do my upgrade. I had no problems to speak of (nothing like whats outlined in Ender519's post) other then I didn't think that the upgrade took but by the sounds of your response to my earlier message, it must have. I had heard the today screen had changed dramatically in WM6.1. I had also heard that the newer version came with a task manager built into the today screen so that it was easy to close programs (similar to functionality you get when you install the Resco today plugin) but I guess not. Today screen looks very much the same as it did before upgrade. I did notice that the Office apps were upgraded and that there is now a domain enrollment program in the network connections area as well as some other small changes throughout the device. Thanks for the info.

Levi
