My only problem is that I can't forward received text messages anymore!

Ah nevermind! I figured that out too!
Thanks for all the helpful posts too!

How do I get to the IRQ? Could you provide the path?
I'm can't provide the exact instructions because I use my Vista PC primarily. But I'd imagine you'd right-click on whatever port/modem you're using, hit properties, and look through the tabs at the top and find the IRQ settings.
Everyone in this thread is a GOD.
i hunted all over google until i finally hit this thread. I was able to use my XP box to update to 6.1 (took two tries like most, and i d-loaded the installer today). Then since i have outlook on my vista box i have to sync with it. So i ripped active sync off of it, installed the latest wmdc, then just for laughs i installed the driver pack off of the samsung website. When i still couldnt connect i realized i the 6.1 upgrade changed my usb settings away from usb modem. changed that back and the device was FINALLY detected without the "unknown device" error i was getting. Then it still wouldnt sync, followed the thread and saw a hard reset is a good thing to do after the 6.1 upgrade. Right after the hard reset it connected to the wmdc right away.
like i said, you guys are awesome. Now ill be happily rocking my i760. I still cant get my email up on 6.1 (worked just fine on 6). but everything else is working now, tx to yall
(forgot to mention i WANTED to ask a question like 8 times, but i kept reading until i went through all 200+ posts. I'm a mod on a hyundai forum and i hate when people don't read the whole thing and ask already answered Q's heh.. as it turns out pretty much Everything was answered already heh)
interesting, i didnt have any probs at all. You are syncing from outlook right? i mean that was my only option. outlook didnt care what version my phone was running. it was the same for 6 and 6.1
If you get any of these errors you will find that no matter how many times you soft or hard reset it comes right back to the same error messages. This obviously may cause you to think your phone is bricked. Don't worry, it isn't.
To fix this all you need to do is boot the phone in "Pass" mode. To do this simply hold the CLR key (the one between the two softkeys) while doing a soft reset. You will see the word Pass appear on your screen and after a minute the phone will procede to boot all the way. Now simply re-run your 6.1upgrade and it will complete successfully. I have successfully upgraded 3 different i760s that experienced this problem and they are all now working perfectly.
Mine did the same thing when I started trying, I was ready to give up. Then I closed all of the other windows that I had open and deleted the original file I had downloaded. Downloaded the same file again, extracted, tried again and it worked. Be patient and persistent
Ok, I've been persistent and am having the same problem. I've tried three different computers (two XP Media Center, and one Vista), downloaded multiple times all with the same results - "ExtractResourceFile Failed"
Like some people here, I got the "your device is upgraded already" message and am not able to upgrade the phone part of the device. (The PDA updated fine.) When I upgraded the PDA part and restarted, the upgrade tool wouldn't detect the device and asked me to hit the reset button. After manually restarting a few times, it finally detected and that's when I got the "your device is upgraded already" message. I tried the upgrade a few dozen more times (on two different computers) using all the tips and tricks I've seen in this thread. Same result. Just called VZW cust support and had a great experience (really). Connected to a tech immediately (no wait) and after about 2 minutes of discussion, they're sending a new phone. They made reference to my being a 5 year customer and my $250/month bill and said they were sorry for my trouble. When I get me replacemnt phone I'll give it another shot.
New i760 comes on Tues.--not sure I'll upgrade to 6.1
I have ordered the Samsung i760 (Verizon), moving from my BB 8830. I anticipated upgrading to WM 6.1 immediately out of the box. HOWEVER, based on this ongoing thread I am not sure I should. As much as I'd like to have the fixes and features in 6.1, it sounds like everyone is running into big problems. I was hoping that updating a "virgin" phone with no 3rd party apps. installed etc. would work well.
Any advice from the forum? I'd hate to mess up my new phone!
(I have Vista Enterprise on my desktop)
Here's a new one on Vista: Double click the installer app, and it fails with the message "ExtractResourceFile Failed" and then exits. From the message window behind it, it looks like it's going to install the "SAMSUNG Mobile USB Driver 4.40" and then reboot, but it looks like it's not able to extract some resource it needs to install the driver in the first place.
If you get the ExtractResourceFile Failed error message try downloading the Samsung Mobile USB Driver directly from Samsung first here
I kept running into the same problem. After downloading and installing the USB drivers I was able to successfully run the install and completed my 6.1 upgrade.

Hope this helps.
That did it! Took two times to install - pda then baseband.
Help - I just upgraded to WM 6.1 and now I cannot get my wifi to connect to any network. It will see the available networks, I can configure the settings, it tries to connect, and then just says it is unavailable. I have tried this with multiple networks, both secure and unsecure. Same problem.
Background: trying to upgrade i760 to WM6.1 using Vista Ultimate 32 bit
I have been on hold with Verizon / Samsung for over 90 minutes and no sign of a fix, so I'm hoping someone here can help. If I run the Vista upgrade tool on my laptop, I was getting the ExtractResourceFile error, but I wasn't if I ran it under the built-in Administrator account. I installed the Modem driver that topquark linked to, and now my account gets the same errror that the Administrator account receives:
"This application only supports Windows Vista OS. Please click the OK button to close"
I've downloaded the tool many times and ran it many different ways and now consistently receive this message. Anyone else run into this? I disabled UAC in Vista to see if that would help but no luck. The good news is my phone's not bricked, the bad news is I can't even get to a point to make my phone a brick
I messed around with this on vista for about 2-3 hours getting problems with "Cannot Extract" the file and it also not recognizing Vista as my operating system. Same problems as the user above me.
Tried to update on my Windows XP laptop and the update was done in about 10min- first time.
The only thing I did was to ignore the "USB as Modem" step, as when I did that, the installer would not recognize my phone. I kept it on the default setting and installation was truly a breeze....

Unfortunately I don't have a good solution to this problem. After waiting 2.5 hours to speak with a Level 3 tech at Samsung (where they constantly were advertising a Sprint phone), I decided to hang up and go home. This morning I took an old spare XP machine and decided to do the upgrade on that system. I still had a bunch of problems - phone locking up, rebooting, not rebooting, XP blue screening in the middle of the firmware flash, etc - but it eventually upgraded the phone.
Now I can't get it to sync via USB and Windows Mobile Device Center on Vista, but I was able to transfer a few files using BlueTooth to get what I needed done.
All in all, this has been an awful experience and one that Samsung and Verizon should be ashamed of!
Hi guys...
Well I finally got around getting a replacement phone after the screen "smudge" issue and also updated it to WM6.1. I figured since things were more or less running stable with WM6 I would wait until I had a reason to reload/hard reset my phone to install it.. And it all when through first time!
It was quite painless. So here's my story...
1) I synced my phone to make sure I had any info in my desktop outlook
2) I documented any settings in the OS or Apps that I would need to recreate after the update.
3) I used PIMBackup (Dotfred's Space) to backup my contacts, calendar, tasks (yes those get backed up with a sync) and call logs, SMS and MMS messages, speed dials.
4) I ran the upgrade according to the link in the i760 support on the Verizon website...it took me to this Samsung site: SAMSUNG's Digital World
Since I was on WinXP I followed the WinXP instruction to the LETTER! (I wonder how many people that are having issues are on Vista?)
5) Ran the update... no issues.
6) Restored my PIMBackup ... but could not restore my speed dials... infact I had to hard reset because it seemed to corrupt the speed dial app.
7) spent the rest of the day playing with the new OS and reloading my apps

Glad it worked out well for you Mark. Enjoy the new (in more ways than one) i760!

Was able to upgrade successfully after two attempts. The first attempt upgraded the OS to WM 6.1 but failed to upgrade the phone. Be sure to check and make sure both and PDA versions read: S:i760.07 V .BD14
I thought I would post this as a follow-up...
In the process of getting my info back on my phone I forgot that ActiveSync will create a new device ID,,, hence through a comedy of errors I ended with a bunch of dups in my Outlook... in fact because I failed to recognize the error of my ways the first time, I did it twice and have triplicates!... So off to google to look for duplicate removal tools and I found a few free ones.. here's a list that is posted at Slipstick Systems Exchange and Outlook Solutions Center... if you use Outlook you need to know about this site.. Duplicate Remover Tools for Outlook
Anyway.. This is what I did... I realized I didn't need a tool as I knew the duplicates were all created on specific days and I hadn't added any significant information since. So within Outlook Contacts I went to View and changed to Category view, then added the "Created" field to the column list (right click on the column headings). When I sorted by the Created field all the dups created on the same date were grouped together ... I moved them to another folder to make sure I got them all before deleting them... I repeated the process for the Tasks and calendar items..
Mark
