For the people that got replacements for the bricked phones what did you tell the verizon reps?
"You tried to install wm 6.1 and it did not complete?"

Also do they send new phones or refurbs? can i go to the store and get it replaced?

Thank you in advance

I couldn't find an answer to this question but perhaps it was lost in the forest.

What the word on backing up, upgrading and restoring? Good idea/bad idea?

Will this save me the hours to re-install and re-configure all my apps?

@iceberg387

I was able to go to my vzw store and told them it bricked while doing the 6.1 update, the guy laughed at me and promptly gave me a brand new phone.

@JonV

My phone didn't like the restore from SPB, the phone started acting funny, so I hard reset and restored my contacts/calendar with activesync.

I backed up my phone with SPB backup before doing the update. After the update I clicked on the *.exe file and everything re-installed fine. I have not had any issues.

My restore locks up near the end during the restore of the registry. I get message that restore hasn't responded in a long time and it's locked. A soft reset gets it "going" but you can tell apps are only half installed. A hard reset gets it back to square one but I'd love to restore my apps.

SAME QUESTION HERE - anyone got confirmation that SPB FULL backups will work - would save SOOOO much time but want this to work out smooth in the end.

Thanks all!

Any brick not replaced?

Has anyone had a bricked phone that VZW has refused to replace?

I got my phone back in October of last year, so I'm concerned that it may be somehow out of warranty or something, and that I'll have to eat the replacement cost.

It sounds like most are able to get the phone replaced if it bricks... but I'm still scared...

I got my Phone October 2, (about 3 weeks before the release). it has a 1yr warranty. you should be in warranty still. I had two phones that they replaced (i didn't brick them), the Auto Timezone didn't work, so they replaced them. Guess what. The AutoTimezone still doens't work.

Just know, the Replacement (Refurbs) don't carry a 1 year warranty, and they don't pickup where your warranty left off. so, if on Day 31 you have problems and VZW replaces with a Refurb, then it will come with a 90 Day Warranty. which is BS. cutting your 12 month warranty down to just 4. (the 30 day trial, then 90 days on the refurb warranty). So, go ahead and upgrade and don't brick the phone, if it does, get a refurb.

Limit on downloads?

As I was downloading 6.1 on the sixth i760 in my lab, I got an error that stated, "you have exceeded the number of download attempts". Has anyone else seen this? It's not a big deal, since I used another computer to finish; but, still I didn't see any warnings of limits in any previous post.

Dangerous,
Thank you for helping me to feel better about diving in. Given when I purchased, a 90 day extension would not shorten my warranty. I completely agree with you that it is bogus that you get only a 90 day warranty on a refurb, regardless of where your original warranty was.

It does sound like... if we brick our phones upgrading to WM7.0 next year, we'll be SOL?

I think I'm 'almost' ready to take the plunge.

I no longer have a very smartphone.

I bricked mine last night. As far as I could see there was no combination of buttons that could get the thing to update.

Emergency mode I was able to get the right devices in device manager, but of course couldn't get MDC to connect so that was useless as well.

This morning I went to a verizon store here in Phoenix to get a replacement under warranty. Of course warranty replacements for this phone are not carried at any of the Phoenix area Verizon stores. I am having them overnight it for saturday morning delivery though. They were going to charge me, but a little bit of patience and pleading and they waived that fee.

When I entered the store and told the verizon reps that my phone was 'bricked' they had no idea what that meant. You have to use terms like 'it does not work' and 'I've tried everything' and then let them fool around with trying to make it work for a half hour before they realize OH! It's about as useful as a brick!

I got my new phone

Before I activated the phone I updated to 6.1 only one reboot and it went perfect the first time. I used PIM backup 2.8 and it worked perfectly to restore everything. It took some time for all of the 5000 text messages to get organized into threads, but it completed successfully after the restore operation.

The only thing that didn't restore was the MMS messages. All of my attachments disappeared and even the text didn't show up just that the message at one time existed.

I'll probably post this in another thread, but did anybody notice that with these threaded conversations you can no longer forward text messages?'

Then I installed PDB Phone Suite again, and the feature of reading me my text messages went back to skipping, reading half then freezing, just reading the name of the sender and just stopping.
I believe that this program creates some kind of conflict with the Voice Command program.
Anyway, I uninstalled the program, but am still having the problem.
What I'd like to do is to reflash the ROM with 6.1 again, and NOT install the Phone Suite program, and see if my phone eventually experiences the problem or if Phone Suite is indeed incompatible with Voice Command.
Uninstalling a program can still leave residule files on the device.
Flashing the ROM cleans it so you start from scratch.
That's my problem and my goal,,... any help would be appreciated.

Just wondering if you were able to get Voice Command running like it used to. I have had the same problem. In fact I have had to disable VC from notifying me of emails and messages, because it would freeze everytime. I don't have phone suite installed. The programs I have installed are:
-AE Buttons Plus
-Skyfire
-Google Maps
-Mobipocket Reader
-I had a reg edit program installed as well, but I have since deleted that program.

I am in the same situation as you. I have been trying to update this since it was first rolled out. Tried all the different tricks people have been suggesting, nothing. I noticed my phone is a tad unstable with the new eboot but the old WM 6.0 is still on it. If I had to do it again, I would not have upgraded the software. If I brick this phone then the hassle of putting another invisible screen shield on my replacement phone. Grrr. This is so, so, so frustrating.

I rather have WM 6.1 on this device...if not then I will wait till the i770 comes out and pawn off this phone to the next chump.

This is a long shot, but is there anyone near the Sacramento, CA that would like to help me with this? I will buy you lunch.

Upgrade

Hey guys, I had the same problem upgrading, (and bricking) my i760. Here's what level 3 Samsung tech support told me:
Upgrade using Windows XP and ActiveSync
Follow all steps very carefully
Check to make sure that the IRQ for your Samsung port(s) in Device Manager are less than 10, otherwise, there is a known timeout issue with the upgrade program

I tried mine first with Vista Home Premium 32 bit, and it failed and bricked my phone.
Hope that helps you!

VZW did replace my phone with a brand new one because they didn't have any refurbs on hand, nor did any other stores in my area. The replacement had 6.0 on it.

I myself am waiting for the i770. I'm hoping for a Q3 release this year, as I was able to extend my 30 day worry free guarantee until September of this year. Any updates on the i770?

How do I get to the IRQ? Could you provide the path?
