In the FAQ is says that there are 2 kinds of Hard Resets, one using the red button and the action key and one using the WM6 software. I am curious what the difference is between the two.
My problem is that I bought the phone and started doing stuff before I read all the FAQ posts I didn't get a good backup solution and I have installed and uninstalled a number of programs. I am having some strange behavior (apps not working right, locking up, etc) and I think I could benefit by doing a hard reset and starting over.
One of my questions is around what happens to my settings if I do either hard reset. Specifically, I sync with my exchange server at work. Will all the connection settings and passwords be lost?
What about other IMAP email accounts?
Any other advice for this situation? Any suggestions on how to do it right next time?

Yup, if you hard reset your phone, it will be in the same condition as when you received it--absolutely no data on it all. The only data that will not be touched is data on the microSD card. As far as I know, the two ways to hard reset result in the same result--your i760 is wiped completely clean.

I do these all the time in dealing with broken phones and the memory leak issue. What these guys say is correct all settings and programs will be wipped. the only data that does not get wiped out is the number programming and the SD chip. Although if you send a kill signal from the exchange server that does wipe the chip. Anyways, you will need to re-input your settings and reinstall. It's also a good idea to remove any saved junk from your phone off the SD chip like email attachments and such. That way your phone doesn't get confused and you reclaim that space.
I've not seen anything about this specific phone but other smart phones I've owned in the past had two hard resets... one deleted everything but left the phone settings (Carrier Phone programing that is) intact.. a total hard reset even reset the phone side chips. In either case the PDA data is wiped!

I've had my 760 for a while (had a 730 and 830 before that) and I was thinking there was a way to have the PIM data restored even after a hard reset - WITHOUT USING 3RD PARTY BACKUP SOFTWARE.
Am I just remembering wrong? I was thinking this was part of the new memory provisioning with WM6 and the 760 - which is why they didn't include Sprite Backup anymore. I've been pouring through the settings though and I can't find how to do this (now that my wife lost all the PIM data on her 760 after a hard reset).
Nope, no way to have PIM data restored after a hard reset unless you've backed it up first. The simplest way to back up PIM data is to copy the PIM.vol file from the root directory of the i760 to either the micro SD card or to a PC using File Explorer or Total Commander.

I know this is a stupid question to those of you who seem to have been born with computers in your hands. But how do you find the pim.vol file and copy it to the sd card? I keep looking for something in the file directory and I don's see it or a way to copy anything.
We would like all new members to read the FAQ's and the Stickies. If that does not yield your answer then use the "Search" at top right. If no answer is found then post your question. This will reduce the amount of duplicate posts and therefore make it easier for others to find there answers.
1) Start
2) Tap File Explorer
3) Scroll down to pim file
4) Hold stylus down on pim file and it will display a list including copy
5) Tap copy and then exit to your external memory card installed "microSD" and tap menu on bottom right then edit then paste.
Thanks, JASTECH
