I e-mailed Samsung from their support website today to ask for an update on the WM 6.1 situation. I think I was very nice in the reply so hopefully I'll get an equally cordial response. We shall see.
Thank you for your email. We appreciate your input and suggestions on how to make a great product even better. We are unable to speculate when/if this software revision with this feature might be available due to the fact that this might lead to inaccurate information and confusion. Please feel free to check back with us periodically for updates.
My i760 wouldn't start 3 days ago. I even tried changing batteries, but the thing would not start up. It was as though it was not getting any power. I was catching an airplane in 3 hours and in a total panic so I called VZW customer support with the intent of asking that they ship a replacement to my destination. While I was on hold, the i760 seemed to fix itself.
In any event, I did end up speaking with the customer service rep. He mentioned something about an "update" for the i760. However, upon my further questioning of him, it was clear that he had no idea what the update was or when it would be available. No big surprise to me; just more of the same.

Heres my email and reply:
To whom it may concern,
I am writing to inquire about a release of windows Mobile 6.1 for the samsung I760.
I am a Mobile Device administrator for a business in New Jersey that currently has over 75 I760 devices that we use to sync email via Microsoft Activesync. Microsoft announced last month that they officialy release windows mobile 6.1 that they have built in many enhancments that will work well with Exchange 2007 and there new device managment server. I would really appriciate an update on if the release will be avalible for the verizon phones as it is something I would like to start testing.
Thank You in your advance for your response.
Thier reply:
Thank you for your inquiry. At the current time, we are in the process of testing, our phones with Windows 6.1 We are unable to speculate when or if this software revision might be available because this might lead to inaccurate information and confusion. I was also told by a samsung employee the same thing. I our verizon rep also said that they were waiting on word from samsung as they are currently testing all componets of the phone with the new OS. So yeah its going to be a while. but when you have over 75 devices waiting to get a new phone, or waiting for the next realease isn't an option.
ok figured I would give a lesson in Pocket PC & Smartphone Devices along with some info on when to expect an update...
First for those of you that like the "New Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard Look" please remember that while it looks nice the GUI was designed for D-Pad input not a stylus as it is a Smartphone not a Pocket PC like the I760 also the processors on the smartphone can't handle as much info as the Pocket PC and this layout allows for picking up the new data and dropping the old on the fly instead of having it all loaded at once like the Pocket PCs
Second the only thing Verizon can do to a Windows Mobile Device is add their Logos & in the case of the HTC 6800 and 6900 force the ISP to rewrite itself Samsung kept that from happening Verizon is unable to tamper with windows mobile software beyond those 2 items and there is no crippling such as not being able to play RTSP streams is a driver issue which I know Samsungs MITS division is working on with Qualcomm to provide a solution in the upcoming Windows Mobile 6.1 Update along with a few other updates but as this is a Mobile device everything has to go into the Build or Rom as most call it before it can be released this isn't like a Desktop every Windows Mobile device is different and each Hardware Developer has to design thier drivers to the new 6.1 AKU standards and test it if it doesn't work they try to fix the issue in a new build and even though Mobile 6.1 has been released Microsoft is still realising software revisions on an almost daily basis as 6.1 is as stable as vista was on release so be patient let the people like me that spend 10 hours a day loading new builds and testing work on this as we have been cuz I know samsung could release the update right now and it would be stable but it would lack everything that we want to see in our phones
If that is the case drkstoner, then I should e-mail Samsung about the image not including Windows Live Integration and not Verizon? Would definitely like to see that feature in 6.1.
sadly Windows Live wasn't included in most windows Mobile 6 Phones that is more Microsoft's fault than anyone else and considering that they took the original windows Live off of the Windows mobile site just to replace it with Live search I am thinking they may have just stopped supporting it for a short time and since it was something that was questioned decided to bring it back in 6.1 but I think what your really asking is if Verizon removed it from the I760 and the answer is no take a look at most Window Mobile 6 Professional devices including the Dell Axim its not there but its making a comeback in 6.1
just for reiteration if you google "windows live for windows mobile" the get Windows Live for Windows Mobile link takes you to the Windows Live for mobile phones not PPC's information site not to an installer or direction on where to get it with the exception of Live Search so as I said blame Microsoft if anyone

drkstoner,
I am not saying that you are wrong but many have said that VZW is crippling these devices. That VZW will tell the manufacturer what they want and don't want in the ROM.
This is from people that have tested units for VZW where on test will have something in it and the next test of the the model will not?

Well thats true for just about any windows mobile device. I will use my personal work experiance as a case in point, right now I am doing testing on the chip set that was put in the new HTC Touch Dual which originally supported HTCs RTSP streaming codec but due to chipset & AKU stability issues in 6.1 was removed the codec worked fine if thats all you were using at once but so many other things caused an issue so we had to alter the build to remove it now HTC wasn't happy and alot of customers aren't gonna be happy about it but they can still go find HTC player that has the codec and install it because well its an Pocket PC and as long as they keep to using the phone and the Codec at the same time they will go on thinking that thier service provider just didn't want the feature and when the phone crashes because they did something else they will just go to thinking its an issue based off them using a version from a different phone but the truth of the matter is it just doesn't work with that piece of software and since there is no standardized Driver language for WM as all the drivers and even directx are rewritten for each phone software companies can really only gaurentee that the software will work on the phones they test on this is something Microsoft plans to fix with 7 so until that happens every windows media device starts with a huge ammount of features and a deadline for realese so the chipset manufaturers such as qualcomm where I work and samsungs MITS division have to pick and choose what they can make work in time for release and cull the features that will take to long to fully debug or are just not gonna work and either add them to later update such as 6.1 if they will work or redesign the next chipset to support it part of why Samsung opted to design thier own Chipset for the i760 but also why somethings don't work that did work on the i730 as it is most testing that Verizon does with the phones is network functional testing since chipset manufacturers aren't given the providers network security information and our internal simulated CDMA/GSM networks aren't designed to have issues(not saying they don't) that you would see in the real world
I think you're overanalyzing IMHO. Engadget's post was about the i770, so I doubt they really care about adding in fake bullet points about the i760 6.1 upgrade. Whoever made the PPT presentation probably just moved it up a little so it would fit on the slide.
Looks like Qualcomm isn't so good at not talking about future products. This morning they were chatting up a new mini laptop they were awfully proud of -- running on Linux, clocking in at around $299, and definitely meant as competition for the EEE PC (and manufactured by Inventec, if you must know). However, during the conversation, the chipmaker hinted that Linux might not be the ideal OS for the platform. In fact, Qualcomm says Windows Mobile 7 key for mini-laptops:
Microsoft Windows Mobile 7, which is made for chips used in mobile phones, will be more laptop friendly than older versions of Windows Mobile, said Luis Pineda, senior vice president at Qualcomm, on the sidelines of a news conference in Taipei.
So to round up the Windows Mobile 7 rumors so far: we hear it will support waving your hand in front of it (you know, gestures), we know it will be radically “context-based,” and we know that Microsoft can't help but let sneak peeks of it drop in promotional videos. Thanks, JASTECH
