I called Verizon today, and they said that they are waiting for Samsung to release the update. I had them get Samsung on the line with us to ask them for an eta. They stated that there was no update currently for the phone, and they don't have any idea, nor eta on when (if) it will be updated. Just wanted to post, for what it is worth.
Talking more with verizon, they said that when they get the update that of course they have to test (cripple) before they release it on their site. They said that it will more than likely be out on samsung's site before their site, but be sure not to use that one, just to wait for it to be posted on www.vzw.com/data. yeah, like that will happen - I think everyone here would rather get the update striaght from samsung, not from verizon...
I hope this update comes out on VZW however,.........
As I have stated before:
VZw is not sitting around saying boy-oh-boy I cant wait for Samsung to come out with an update for the i760!
First off there is no incentive for Samsung to come out with an update to a device that has already been released and is at the end of it's life cycle. Samsung has limited resources to work on an effort like this with no benefit to them in the context of revenue.
Second, the same goes for VZW. They do not have the infrastructure to service their customers on the current OS why would they want to go thru the expenses and resources to get another OS certified on an older device.
Both companies are looking to the next release of a new (crippled) device and a way to squeak out the next "leading edge" device. lol.........
Bottom line is I hope this is released but I for one will not be holding my breath.

I'm putting my money on Apple releasing an updated version of the iPhone before we legitimately are able to get our hands on the Bluetooth patch or WM 6.1.

Werner R. in his most recent (today) blog on Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine has a wealth of information on 6.1 ROMs he has experimented with. He is a very high calibre IT person and provides clear and copious instruction. Chek it out.
The 730 had Windows mobile 2005 then Windows Mobile 5 about a year later, I remember it, I had the SD i730 ROM.
If a device that just came out in November is at the end of it's life cycle, I am very right thinking this is my last samsung device. I can go to XDA and get roms for HSPDA's and other devices that aren't crippled and will allow me to upgrade at my will, instead of waiting for those jerks over at Verizon to test and cripple the device for 6 months

Both Verizon and Samsung have good history of providing OS updates to Windows Mobile devices long after their release. Both the i700 and i730 got version upgrades (I think the i700 got two of them).

I think you meant "Windows Mobile 2003," not "Windows Mobile 2005."

wow......these debates/wish-fests are still going on over here in VZW land....lol. i left for the Tilt and haven't looked back.
i don't think too many of you all are going to stay with the i730 now that the Touch, or XV6900 as VZW calls it, w/internal GPS is coming tomorrow.
an added bonus: an official WM6.1 upgrade for the Touch has already been promised by HTC. and cooked 6.1 ROMs are already floating around. i'm not a ROM expert, but i imagine as long as you know VZW's settings, these ROMs should work on the XV6900, too, or could be made to with minimal effort.

The reason that VZW released an update to the os for i730 was becuse they were VERY late on releasing the i760. That's why I am saying the i760 in at the end of it's life cycle........it was released a year late and a year in tecgnilogy land is a very very long time.

HTC makes crap! Anyone who has ever owned an HTC device knows it (I have had 2 personally and had 3 i700s replaced at my business with 6700s by VZW when they had finally been abused for too long) The 6700 was, without exception, the biggest piece of S**T Windows Mobile device ever produced. Horrible design, terrible quality and completely unreliable. My wife just got herself an SMT5800 and it is another total turd bucket. HTC actually managed to create a Windows Mobile 6 Smartphone that won't run Microsoft software designed for Mobile 6 Smartphones. I challenge you to find support for ANY HTC device if you have problems with it. Guess what - you can't! VZW will tell you to call Audiovox. Audiovox hasn't owned UTStarcom for years! But don't call UTStarcom because they no longer front for HTC. So call HTC. Yeah, go ahead and give that a try. At least with Samsung, we have the opportunity to talk to the manufacturer's pseudo support organization when VZW offers us no assistance. Good luck with your "Tilt".

this is my first HTC phone so you might be right about overall HTC quality, but based on the convos i've seen over at xda-developers, i doubt it. that said, the tilt is rock solid. i've had it since october with no issues and, like most people, i've dropped my phone way too many times. the build quality on this is better than other HTC devices, according to some folks, and there has been zero loss of quality in the tilt mechanism, springs, keyboard, or anything else.
and it's even better with WINDOWS MOBILE 6.1.....which all of us Tilters have had for the past two months.

I held a tilt and I thought that it was just like the xv6800 but only with the added tilted screen. Is there anything else different about it besides the OS?

From what I can tell, after hacking through the i760 for a month now, Samsung has very little software or software control on the i760. They have MITs, the keypad driver and that's pretty much it. Check for yoursef in the registry.
It seems to me that the i760 was designed just to run WM software. Even two hardware buttons are branded with the windows logo.
My point is, neither Samsung nor VZW is a big worry here. If you look up WM6.1 the windows site, the first thing you see is an i760. Windows pwns this device.
VZW may hold up the update to 6.1, but it will come from the windows mobile download site (I think a VZW tech had said that already). The update will come in time.
As for all the peeps who rag on the i760's tech, check out the S3C2440 microprocessor. That is what powers the i760 and a lot of HTC devices as well as a bunch of other handheld tech. (ever wonder why the sdhc drivers from an HTC work on the i760?) The outside of the i760 may look boring but inside there is a powerful triad nija pirate warrior that can cure aids and kill zombie hoards in the blink of an eye... oh and it has some pretty sweet assembly code that dwarfs most other devices with different cmos and or microprocessors. We mock what we don't understand.

The xv6800/Titan is a generation older than the Tilt/Tytn II. The Tilt has twice the RAM and ROM space, which is the primary indicator of the current gen WM phones. It also boasts a built-in GPS (the 6800 has one as well, but it's currently disabled), and a better camera with auto-focus.
That's, of course, all completely irrelevant to this topic.
