tethering

i am getting a laptop and would like to tether the pone for internet use on my laptop. with the i730 i did it by the way of a cable and dialing a number on the phone to access the modem mode.

with this phone i know that verizon disabled it... i tried searching for post containing "tether" and nothing came up. can someone tell me what posts or what the word i should be searching for that describe this process?

By far the easiest way to tether right now is with the wmwifi program. Read the sticky at the top of the threads. I use it all the time. No regedits or modem settings needed. Just install and go.

Are you talking about wifirouter?

If so that site is OFFLINE and you cant download. Also there is 40 pages of BS to wade through to figure out all the issues. Maybe post a link to a non-offline site to download it from as well as the final WORKING info. Who wants to read 40 pages of stuff only to find out its not available and not working.

I have tethered the I-760, however you need the VZ manager software, the
data plan($45.00) and the a tether surcharge(15.00)-both monthly charges.

Sorry I didn't know the site is down. As far as issues, I have had zero. I turn it on and it works flawlessly. I am just guessing but I suppose he is planning on selling the software. It would definitely be a must have for me.

But it is the legal and morally upright solution.

And to be honest, Verizon has really shaped up over the last year. I actually have a better view of Verizon after dealing with them and our 80 lines of service on a weekly basis now than I did when I opened the account 2 years ago.

X2

Verizon has top notch customer service. If they say they they will do something they do it. They almost always solve my issue to MY liking. They give credits if asked. I really have had good dealings with them.

Now Dish network is another story. (LIARS!)

easy solution w/o paying the $15/month

PdaNet + Power Hot Sync & Charge

This is EXTREMELY easy and provides good speed (better than the WIFI). If you get the cable it will also allow you to use the tethered sync and charge it at the same time, which was important to me. Good Luck.

Most people, including myself want tethering when there is no wifi connection available. Any laptop today most likely comes with a wifi adapter.

I tethered my Q with Verizon, but I'm going to give pdanet and the usb charging cable a go. I've seen alot of good feedback on both.

The alternative with Verizon is okay, one good thing for me when I needed it in the past was that it could be activated and de-activated with a phone call, therefore avoiding a constant $15 per month charge if you didn't need it.

Try using this.

Copy this cab onto your phone.
Run & install the cab.
Go to the Programs menu on your phone and click on Usb Modem. Click Enable.
Your computer will detect new hardware. Make sure for a driver you select the driver usbmodem.inf included in this download.
Once you have the drivers properly installed, it's time to set up the dial-up connection.
From the control panel on your pc, find network connections.
Click "Create a new connection" which should start the wizard on your pc.
Select connect to the internet, then setup my connection manually, then connect using a dial-up modem.
Select the USB Modem check box and make sure no other modems are selected. Click next.
For an ISP name, Verizon Broadband Access. Click next.
For phone number #777. Click next.
Your username is your phone number @vzw3g.com, so if your cell # is 617 555 1611, your username would be 6175551611@vzw3g.com
Your password is vzw.
Finish the wizard. It should popup the connection box. Click connect. You're online
It will say something like you're connected at 921 kbps.
Enjoy.

I am not sure that you understand how the program works. It turns your phone into a wifi hotspot. Once you install the cab files you just turn it on. My laptop sees it and connects. No need to set up modem connections, VZAccess software, or Active Sync/WMDC (depending on your tethering method).

Yes it does eat up battery but I never use it long and I am usually driving in between offices so the phone is always charging while I drive. To me that is the only disadvantage. The nice part are the times when I am in a meeting with someone we both have an internet connection.

But you still have to have wifi available to connect to? Or does it use your data plan and let your laptop connect to it?

"I like to think of it as magic. And so should you. That's all you need to know. We did it. And it's magic."

LOL Sorry, I love to throw in my favorite FSJ quote whenever someone asks me how something works.

Yes you need a laptop with wifi. Basically in very rough terms it uses your phones data and sends it out through your phones wifi. Someone else could explain it way better than me. To me it is magic.

for those of you who are using wmwifi without problems, did you do anything out of the box (i.e.- registry edits)? or just install the cabs?

I have installed it, and when i turn it on it seems to let me to load one or two (maybe three, at best) websites without problem, but after that it ALWAYS then craps out....any ideas?

You could also install the internet sharing program (was removed by verizon). That cab is floating around on this site or similar sites. Its also reqiored for wifirouter to work if you can ever get a copy of that. I used internet sharing with my phone by starting the application, connect the sync cable, and windows XP identified an internet sharing device. That was it, I was online. simpler than wmodem program as no set up required (but that works to). I was lucky enough to get a copy of the wifirouter program before the site shut down, so keep an eye on that. Its sure to be very popular once development is finished. I'll pay for it as long as the price is reasonable. Seems even better than PDAnet, which I have not tried

CAUTION!!!!!!!!!!

The above method completely wiped out my activesync connection and I had to HARD reset.

I have the $45 data plan and $15 tethering, and a powered USB cable. I use VZAccess on my laptop. It has worked great for me. I use WiFI when it's available and free, and my i760 when it's not.

first off can someone tell me where I can get PDAnet and also i am curious as to how this works.... does this work like the old tethering on the i730 where all incomming calls are blocked as long as I am using this or does it accept calls? does it use the verizon unlimited data package or does this use minutes?

as for mark_A_K's solution, that sounds a whole lot like the old i730 tethering method.... does this use minutes or unlimited data as well?

lastly, the verizon tethering that charge 15 a month..... is this the fastest option out of all of these?

I am looking to play some games on my off time as well as do work on this laptop, I need a connection thats realistic and not lag ridden.
