Chalk me up as another person unable to get this working correctly.
On the i760 the application will run, and will appear to get connected properly. What I mean is that after I open the application, and then select "connect" the program will display several status messages, winding up with "Connected to WMWifiRouter", "Ready". And I am able to get my laptop to then connect to the WMWifiRouter wireless network. (This is a bit buggy. Sometimes it will seem to "completely" connect, but other times although it appears "partially" connected, the dialog box will bever complete from the "please wait while Windows connects..." message.) In any case, no matter the level of connection to the Wifi router I seem to have, I never have any internet connectivity.
I have tried this with and without the DHCP allocator, and with various IP address ranges.
One thing of note is that when I view my available wireless networks, the one for WiFiRouter appears as an unsecured computer to computer network, as opposed to appearing as simply a wireless network. Could this be the issue?
my contract says unlimited. I thought that "not in compliance with unlimited" imposed limit was now behind us?
Does Verizon impose a limit still?
I don't want to take this too far off topic, but yes, they still impose a limit. It is now spelled out in the terms of service and they don't cancel your data anymore, but they will reduce you to 1X speed. Your contract does not say unlimited because you don't contract for features. Your contract will say something about features being subject to change, and you were mailed an updated terms of service sometime in the past 10 months or so (started around April or May of last year).
I see no one has responded to my request for assistance or guidance or input above, so I', going to make another request...
Could someone knowledgable on this topic possibly please post a complete step by step set of instructions, with all the information and required files in one place? In theory all that information is contained in this thread, but with the changes and pointers to other forums and updates I expect that I must have done something wrong or out of order, and that that is why I can not get the software to work. And I know I am not alone.
As an example of the hodgepodege of information that now exists, using the files that Nate included in post 39, and the instructions from mrailing in post 26, I a)was unsure as to how to include the regedits, and b)never got to the set of choices mrailing described between auto setup and manual setup.
I think if someone could put together a complete step-by-step, with no pointers to other forums or other documents, it would really help me, as well as others who have not been able to get this working, as well as others that will find this in the future.
I just tried following the directions in your post above, post 65, still without any luck.
I plan on doing a hard reset, restoring my data from a backup I have from before I started messing with ICS and WIFIrouter, and trying again. But before I do that, I have a couple of questions...
You wrote:
"1. Donwload zip file (post 39). Copy cabs for ICS and Wifi router to storage card."
There are only two cabs in that file: the wifirouter cab and one named cf.cab. Is the cf.cab the cab file for ICS you reference above? (I assumed it was.)
When you say "Run ICS once" are you referring to the ICSInstall.exe file--the one where we need to then select "patch?" Or are you referring to the file found in the windows directory, referenced in one of the posts on another site, called IntShrUI? When I run that program, Internet Sharing, the selected options are "USB" for PC Connection, and "Broadband Access" for network connection. Do I need to make any changes there? Should there be other options that I am not seeing?
Also, in one of my previous install attempts, I had followed these directions for installing ICS, from the XDA-developers forum thread referenced here, which includes an extra reset.
---
For those that still don't have ICS correctly installed.
- Extract the files from the attached ZIP to your computer
- Copy ICSInstall.exe, ICSInstall.bin and cf.cab to your device
- Install cf.cab on your device
- Soft-reset
- Run ICSInstall.exe
- Click Patch
- Wait 'til it says Done
- Soft-reset
- Test ICS ( \Windows\IntShrui.exe )
- Delete ICSInstall.exe, ICSInstall.bin and cf.cab
- Report here if it works
---
In the directions above I am not sure what I am looking for when I "Test ICS" by running IntShrui.exe.
And VirtualDavid--you said you did not do any registry hacks. Does that mean you did nothing with the included files labeled MobileRegistryEditor?
Finally, does the WiFinetwork appear as a computer to computer network, as opposed to simply as a wireless network when other devices attempt to connect to it? That's how mine appears, so I want to make sure that is correct. Again, I can get connected, but I have no internet connectivity, which makes me think there is an issue with the Internet Connection Sharing on the i760.
Thanks again, VirtualDavid, for your help above, and for answering these questions. And thanks in advance to anyone else who wants to chime in.

Andy, your description seems way to complex. You've got files I did not use and are doing patching and configuring that I did not have to do.
I have attached the two cab files I used for convenience. Its basically a straightforward install with very little fuss, as follows:
Change the extension of the files from .txt to .cab (I changed them for the upload process), and copy to your phone.
Install the cab files to your phone. Reset (part of any program installation procedure)
Run ICS from the phone then reset (this may not be required, but I did it).
Start the application by running Wifi router on the phone. It loads up ICS and starts the Wifi radio, etc. The first time you run it, set the DHCP as mentioned below.
That's it. There are no patches, hacks, extra files, etc. Just these two files. Install, run, it works.
Or at least it worked for me. Or maybe I have forgotten a crucial but tiny detail...
Good luck!
David

The files I was referencing were in that post 39 zip file. Based on your description in your last post, I wonder if perhaps you had actually used the ICS cab file that I just pointed to in my post above yours. That solved the problem for me.
Im having a problem getting my laptop to connect, The software seems to be work and my laptop see it and when i try to connect to it it just hangs out, I tried the DHCP allocate and still no luck , Im using a vista loaded laptop
has anyone found that after installing this that ALL wifi connection attempts other than the WIFIROUTER seem to get stuck on in the "Connecting" process?
I would really like to use this solution, but for now I have had to uninstall it as it leaves my ability to connect to true wifi networks completely inoperative.

yes that is a problem.

VZW, It's 2009! Time to embrace technology, not suppress it. - oops too late I've moved on over to the iPhone w/ AT$T!
I used Virtualdavids install and files and at first it worked flawless for most of the day, connecting and disconnecting when I was away. Then at the end of the day I was using it and the connection died and would not come back on. I"ve been battling with it using different configurations and nothing would work until a few minutes ago I realized my problem.
I had not set up the Ad-Hoc on my Laptop (Vista Ultimate) but it was connecting fine when it would show up in the list of networks. I would double click and it would connect no problem. Then when it stopped working I tried to setup an Ad-Hoc on my laptop and it worked a few times and stopped working. Then just now I changed my Ad-Hoc network name on my Laptop to a different name than the one on my phone and it is working perfect so far.
Don't know if it will help anyone out there but thats what happened with me.
Also I was not able to connect to other networks at first until I went to Settings/Connection/Wifi and changed the selection from Computer to Computer only to all available. Then my networks came up and I was able to connect.

Did you try changing the IP range to 192.168.1.x from the default of 0. I found that I got the "waiting for network" on a vista laptop ALOT when using the default range. Also Vista has some additional security.
Try deleting the connection setting on your laptop and when you run it make sure you select "trusted connection".
For me personally DHCP allocator works with some laptops some of the time but it seems more stable with it off. My iPod Touch will NOT connect at all with the allocator turned ON.
can anyone provide info on how to secure the wifi connection? I would like to make it so that it requires a key/password... that way only I (and other people I give the key) can connect to the internet via my phone's connection.
before i read this entre thread, from the first page i read it doesnt explain what this actually does....is this basically to make ur phone act as an internet source and thus a "wifi router" for any devices around it that requires internet connection?
i thouht i'd ask first before i read since the beginning does not really mention what this is for.

It sets up your phone in an Ad Hoc configuration so that you can use it to browse the internet with a wireless device.
To use a WEP key Settings / Connections / Wi-Fi. Edit WMWifiRouter and click next until you see the section for a key. Select WEP and make a key and done.
can someone put up a copy of wifirouter? the latest version v0.91 is not available on their website and no where else on the net.
The author has asked explicitly that it not be posted anywhere. Apparently he is dealing with a legal issue, but is continuing the Beta with those who already have the software and is planning on releasing it when the legal issue is resolved.
I went with the ICS patch version and now when I am uninstalling wifi router i do not see the ICS installed on the phone.... I was only able to uinstall wifi router. How do I uinstall the ICS patch?
