Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum and just got my i760 the day before Christmas. Anyhow, I tried searching for this problem, but I came up with nothing relavant.
The first two days I had my phone I was able to send picture MMS messages. Now, it will not let me. It says "1 of 1 message(s) could not be sent! (Message Delivery Failed, Try Again?)"
I have Verizon if that helps... Ohh and IM+ installed, but the problem started happening before I installed IM+.
I am on my 2nd i760 (replacing it was thought to fix the problem), while in the store and on the phone with tier 2 support from Verizon, I was able to receive 1 picture message. Since then, I cannot send nor receive picture messages.
Im having the same problem, i can't send or receive picture messages. i was just on the phone for half an hour trying to fix it. At first they told me the data block was preventing them (which is logical), they removed the data block, i updated using *228, and im still unable to send/receive picture messages...

Yea, I've even done a hard reset and can't get them. Support, although MAYBE aware of the issue, currently has no way to resolve it.
I use a pay as you go data plan only becuase I have wifi everywhere I would need internet. I had the same issue and spoke w/ VZW. They told me that eventhough I pay for a pic message bundle, I still need to use the data plan (pay as you go) to send/receive messages..
Is this correct? Why does my wife who has a non-pda phone only have to pay the bundle rate for pictures?
It works, but I hate the fact that I have to pay twice to send a pic..
My understanding from the collective wisdom of this board (I don't really use MMS) is that you cannot have a data block on your account to use MMS because it does use data, but that you should not be charged for it for MMSes. Apparently VZW can distinguish.
Update: I'm still unable to send MMS even after doing a hard reset. Anyone have any ideas? I don't feel like calling Verizon again just to do the same things over and over again trying to get it to work.
I am in the same position. My buddy is Verizon store manager and he is working on it for me. he has forwarded the problem to their tech support. Ill update if I find a solution.
I am unable to send MMS messages at all. When I am sent an MMS Message I get text included in the message but I get no video or audio, When I try to retrieve the video I get the following message:
“Not available Messaging Service on current phone status, Retry later.”
I get this same message when I try to send an MMS message.
I do not have a data block.
I have “pay as you go” data plan
I have "pay by the message" for SMS.
I have disabled the 777 dialup by replacing the 777 with a 1.
I have a good wifi connection. I have assumed wifi would satisfy connection needs although I never needed internet access to use MMS on my Motorola E815.
I see many people in this forum who are not using the data plan, but, very few posts about being unable to send/receive MMS messages. This makes me think my phone/service is not configured correctly.
I called Verizon regarding this matter and one of the techs said it was a problem with a few of the i760's. After going over basic troubleshooting, he determined that it was in fact a problem with the phone itself and he gave me case number. I went to the Verizon store the next day where I got my phone, gave them the case number, and exchanged it with a new i760. Been sending MMS picture messages without any problems for a few days now.
I had this problem too after I deleted the *777 connection from my phone. I called up Verizon and this is what they told me:
1) In order for MMS to work, you have to enable *777. Data is used to send/receive MMS.
2) Data used to send/receive MMS might shown on your bill, but it will be for $0.00.
3) Putting data blocking on your account also disabled MMS.
So, basically, you have to leave things as-is and ensure in some other fashion that you don't use data for web browsing/e-mail/etc.
even tho i paid for the $5 tix/pix/flix package, i found that i had a few cents of KB usage on my bill. i have the pay-as-you-go data package. since i didnt use internet at all, i figured the connections were from my pix. when i compared the dates/times of KB usage with the dates/times pix were sent or recv, i found 100% correlation (once i realized they use a different zone clock for KB usage and pix ).
even tho it was only 5 cents, i asked how this could be. after getting some explanation on the phone -- which i ignored, of course, as any long-time reader of this forum knows to do -- i sent an email. i got three responses, one of which told me it was impossible for the pix to cause data charges, and two of which said, yes, there are data charges. third response enclosed.
I apologize about the delay in the response to this email. I am sorry to hear that there is a problem with the bill. My name is David and I will be glad to answer any questions that you have about the data charges. Steve I tried to contact you to discuss the data charges on your bill. There was no answer. I left a message for you. Steve when you are sending or receiving a picture message it does use from your data. You do get charged for the kilobyte usage of that picture message. I apologize about any confusion that this may have caused you. I make it my personal goal to resolve all of your concerns. I hope I have resolved all the questions that you had about data charges on your bill. Should you have additional questions or you feel your concerns are not resolved, please call us at 1-800 -922-0204 or reply to this email, and we will address those for you. Sincerely, David Verizon WirelessCustomer Service
My problem is fixed. I called customer service (who was very helpful) I discovered that when I had restored the 777 number per MManquen's advice I used *777. It needs to be #777. MMS is fixed. I asked about billing and was told that there would be a 25 cent/message charge but there will be no data charges. I will watch the billing to verify that.
My only concern now is with inadvertant usage of the verizon broadband network. Are there any suggestions on how to avoid usage while maintaining the connection for MMS?
I got my MMS fixed today. No idea how it got fixed. Called VZW from a separate phone, and they had me turn my phone off, back on, and dial *611 from it so the network would recognize it, i tested MMS, and it worked. I believe they modified my account in some way, but what they did actually they never said.
I have been trying to resolve a data plan concern. I have done multiple searches and read hundreds of postings on mms and data plan topics, but have been unable to find an explanation that satisfies my concern.
The i760 is a fun and very capable device. It is also complicated (one of the reasons it is fun for some of us!). This is my first converged device and I am surprised at the extent to which the device complicates simple phone usage. For example, I would like to have the same text/picture messaging capability as my old Motorola E815.
Specifically, I use sms/mms messaging very little, but I still want this capability. I pay $.15/$.25 for sms/mms and that is a good plan for me. I have wifi access most of the time that I want to use my i760 as something other than a phone. So, I don’t want to pay for the unlimited data plan.
For mms I know I must have a data plan and that the pay-as-you-go plan is adequate. Of course, I. must keep the EVDO #777 dial out number and cannot have a Data Block
I am concerned about the cost of undesired data transfer. I know that I can initiate programs that need data access. I know that some apps go out to the internet “continuously” or periodically and can theoretically be configured the way you want. So, I can do things to cause data use and some apps can automatically cause data use. I know I make mistakes and I am not sure I trust apps to behave properly.
I am paranoid about a large unrequested data transfer blowing up my Verizon bill.
In my searches I found ways to manually disable and re-enable the network. That is not what I want.
I cannot find a way to configure the phone/account data capability to maintain connectivity necessary to only send/receive mms messages and nothing else. It appears that I need to live with the risk of human error or unwanted application behavior. Is this correct?
This is the catch 22... You HAVE to have a data connection available for MMS to work, but you want to have it disabled because you don't want to incur data charges... This is where you will run in to a wall. You could change the dialup number to something else, and then when you want to send an MMS, change it back to #777, send the message, and then disable it again. However in doing so you won't be able to receive the messages either.
There is just no simple way to have it "only" available for MMS... It's all or nothing...

Thank you for the quick confirmation. That is what I had learned from this wonderful forum but was hoping there was a magic solution that I had missed. I will be cautious - especially with apps that I install.
I found the following instructions for how to set up a username and password that the phone will prompt you for before the EVDO network connects. It said it was for the XV6700, but I thought that since the xv6700 and the i760 both use WM06 that it might work for the i760 too. I don't know much about phones or computers, and I haven't bought the i760 yet, so I was wondering if anyone wanted to try it and see if it worked! Here are the instructions:
go to settings/connections/connections/manage existing connections/edit/next/next
enter anything for username some believe you need your phonenumber fallowed by @vzw.com but you don't
make sure nothing is in the password area and hit finish
now it will promt you for a password whenever it try to connect
Thanks Amanda6! I think this is the best solution to the problem. I deleted the password and had someone send me an MMS message. The connection dialog popped up asking for the password and I immediately received the message after entering it. The ideal would be to get MMS messages with no intervention at all but that can't be done safely. So I will leave the password blank. When the connection dialog pops up I can verify that there are no data sucking applications running, input the password, and get my pictures. Previously I had disabled the #777 number. But then you have to manually fix the #777 number and open a connection to check to see if any MMS messages arrived. Your way I get a notification that I have a message. I wonder if it is possible that when the data connection is active for the transmition of the MMS an application could piggy back on that same connection?
