Here we are on July 1st, it is now 3rd Quarter 2009 or 2nd Half.
Verizon made a commitment to unlock the 910 in the 1st half of the year. It looks more like trying to placate current users and induce others to buy the phone based on a promise.
Well I happen to love my Omnia now that it runs SPB Mobile Shell 3, but the lack of open GPS support and more importantly Verizon's practices may require a network change after over a decade of loyalty.
The Omnia II looks really nice with a much needed resolution bump and front-facing camera, but if the device is crippled, good night verizon...
Well, many of us (myself included) have been happily using the beta roms that provide openGPS. does it suck that we have to resort to that? Absolutely. But it works, and it works great.
I've been quite conservative as I'm not sure if moving to the "Beta" will cause a situation where migration to an "official" ROM could be made impossible.
They just release GPS unlocked Roms for the Touch Pro and the Sage in the past two weeks, I am sure the Omnia will follow shortly. All the memos that listed which phones they planned to unlock listed these three. (I am hoping they do the Diamond too, since I want one, although the Omnia 2 looks really sweet too).
Yep, given that Verizon just released GPS unlocks for the Saga and Touch Pro, I think calling it a broken promise is premature. More likely, protracted development.
You see, software often takes longer to develop than estimates. This might be news; it's only been true for about 30 years now.
The moderator on the verizonwireless.com forum thread on omnia gps (a verizon employee) posted the following:
As for the matter at hand - the key information communicated by our Executive Escalation depart includes a 'target' delivery date. As many of you know, we have recently deployed updates to other smartphones and remain committed to providing the previously communicated update to the Omnia.
We apologize if the timeframe is not in line with the expectations of some of our customers - but there is even less value in releasing software that has not been fully tested and is not up to Verizon Wireless' standards.
So - the net of this message post is: we remain committed to the update to the Omnia,it will be released as soon as it meets our standards, and we cannot provide a more specific date other than 'as soon as possible'.
Seriously, what are you guys waiting for. Just upgrade to one of the many ROMs out there. I have been using one for several months now and have not had a single issue. The phone is faster, works better and the GPS works flawlessly. In the past others have not had any issues upgrading from a beta ROM to the official VZW ROM. And even if for some reason you do, all you have to do is call VZW and tell them that your phone is no longer working. If you are still within the first year they will ship you a refurbished one for free.

what com and baud rate setting do u use for ur gps? mine works only sometimes
one of these days some will get really mad and slap Verizon with class action suit for not delivering as promised.... crippling devices by all that forcing their customers to pay for data plan which they don't really need or pay extra fees for gps on phones which fully are equipped and disabled on purpose to create big revnue for big red.
honestly there are so many cool new roms available for the omnia(currently running adrn1.7) not sure why anyone would use the bloated verizon rom. the cooked roms are faster, have more memory and are in my opinion more stable than either verizon rom we have seen so far. Once you do the initial rom update to CC20 the cooked roms are practically fool proof point and click.
Maybe we can look forward to a cooked version of CF03 that keeps any good new stuff but, again, eliminates the bloat and provides the sleek, speedy devil that Adrynalyne's v1.7 (and similar) is
I have not tried one of the cooked ROM's yet because none of them have removed Opera. There are like 3 newer versions of Opera and now that IE runs like IE 6 I hardly ever use Opera anymore.
If there is one out there that removed Opera let me know please.

So you would rather use the slower vzw rom with no gps, bloatware, and opera instead of a faster custom rom with gps enabled, bloatware removed, but still has opera?
