from what i know, you absolutely cannot upgrade the OS's on a BlackBerry using WM7 - it bricks the phone temporarily. really not a problem for me as i have other PC's i can use to do it. i actually have the morning off and i am planning on backing up my laptop and restoring it to a fresh copy of vista ultimate then installing wm7. should be a fun morning! i will let you know how it all goes.
Why install Windows 7 if it will only last month or two and top of that is full of bugs. I am talking about security bugs.
Maybe some of us have more computers lying around than we know what to do with so it's no big deal to throw it on one of those computers, kick the tires before you have to buy it to try it? If you Google "reviews Windows 7" you will see that your opinion doesn't mesh with those of most well-regarded computer tech columnists but each to his own. Some people want to try it, others don't. Somebody who doesn't want to try it shouldn't find too much fault with those who do and vice-versa. It's probably only a good idea to try it if you have a computer on which you're not doing any mission-critical stuff.
As far as security, from this point on, I can't imagine Microsoft not protecting its CTP release of Win7 with the same security updates it offers for Vista (and the two seem closely related). I'm behind hardware firewalls at work and home and running NIS 2009 on every machine, even several virtual machines. NIS 2009 reports its properly running on Win7. In the release notes, Microsoft mentions no need for new anti-virus software for Win7. Simply says, shut it down during the install, turn it back on when you're done.
Why live? You're going to die someday, eventually.
People who read the Welcome to our New Moderator thread may remember that I quoted Dwight Silverman, the Houston Chronicle computer columnist on his views of Windows Mobile future and the perils ahead. He's a Mac User and he said Android is Windows Mobile done right.
He says the beta download will expire Feb. 10th and one reason not to install it is that Microsoft may not offer you anything right away to rescue you when the current beta expires in August. Be prepared, possibly, to go back to your previous OS.

i actually decided to do a dual-boot setup now that i have plenty of space on my HD...
That's a great idea. Then if you don't like it or Microsoft doesn't provide another release before this one expires, you don't really have to roll back anything to still have a functional computer.
Yeah I would have done the same if I'd had the space but at 25 Gig per OS I just aint got it on my 80 gig HD wth 30 Gig of it split between data and reovery partitions. Can it be installed on an external and used as a boot partition I wonder? Maybe I might pick up one of those to play OS games with.

yeah, the more i thought about it, i decided that was the right move. my laptop is my primary pc and my business lifeline. the thing i decided to do now is not keep all my crap and old crap right on my HD. i am now keeping it all on one of my external drives and now i am keeping all of my important/most used office files on my windows live office space so i can esily get at it from anywhere. reformatting my laptop gave me good reason to look more deeply into the "cloud" and using it. i have already been using live mesh for a while. luckily i have a snow day today and will be working from home and will partition my drive and load 7 and report back!
OK... update...
Worked my butt off at home yesterday and not much time for play... but I did setup my partition in my drive. I had 63 gb free so I setup 30gb for Win7. I am definitely going to load 7 today. Vista sure has a nice easy tool built in for partitioning your HD.
Here is the site I got the info from on doing it all the right way: Windows 7: How to Dual Boot Windows 7 with XP or Vista
and this page for the Vista partitioning: Disk management console
Don't know that this wouldn't happen in Vista but I want to recreate a rough draft of a new web-based training course in Word 2007. I have text in Adobe Flash CS3 FLA files from another course that I want to repurpose. In selecting and copying and pasting the text into a Word 2007 outline, about every 5 to 10 items copied and pasted Word locks up big time. If I am lucky, I can just pick "Restart Program" from the not responding dialog, else it's a complete lockup and reboot. I am happily clicking "Send Information to Microsoft". Even in Vista, I love the suggested problem solutions "You have Adobe Acrobat 8. Please upgrade to Acrobat 9 to solve this problem".... or somethump'n like that.
Generally, though, in opening Word 2007 in Win7, things go better than Vista. My personal laptop is an HP 2006 vintage "Vista-compatible" (read: underpowered) computer. It will routinely crash on the first attempt to open Word 2007 under Vista (Norton?). In Win7, not a problem. I just need to stay away from .FLA files!
I installed a USB IrDA (infrared) adapter (Cables Unlimited) and an Omron HJ-720ITC Pocket Pedometer (syncs walking data via USb) with no problem in Win7.
P.S. Did not have to install 3rd party drivers for either device. The IrDA device was recognized for what it was and my Polar watch could sync via IR no problem.

You'd need to have a computer capable of running AEREO in Vista to be able to get the PEEK effects, etc. in Win7 (DirectX9, good graphics Processor & CPU). But you can see some of it in action in the videos.
The Windows Live features intrigued me enough I went and downloaded the Windows Live Toolbar (don't remember if I had it installed under Vista and/or it got carried forward into Win7). Installling/reinstalling the Windows Live Toolbar cured my Outlook IMAP as along with the install came the Outlook Connector. Now I can access my MSN account again directly in Win7 thru the Outlook 2007 interface and edit my e-mail in the clouds.
More devices/programs run successfully under Windows 7
Just got the Dragon NaturallySpeaking SP1. Installs just fine under Windows 7. Also installed a Logitech N470 Bluetooth mouse. The setpoint ( mouse driver) software on the installation CD complained about an incompatible operating system. Downloaded the latest setpoint.exe (v4.7). Complained again about the OS but now gave me the option to continue and everything works fine.
The Logitech N470 mouse is a very nice notebook device. You think it's too small but it actually fits very well in your hand and moves very smoothly and easily. Highly recommended. Runs on two AA batteries and Amazon.com reviews say they last a long time.
ok, been messing around with 7 a little but not enough to really get to know it well. i reformatted my vista ulitmate laptop and partitioned the drive and dual boot to 7 and vista now. but... i just got my acer aspire one 10" netbook with the 160gb hd, etc. and i am wiping xp home and loading win7 on it this weekend and will be really getting to know 7. will be reporting... gonna hook up my moto q9n and my storm to it.
Gosh, darn. My Mitsumi FDUSB-TM2 USB 3.5 inch diskette bombed on 1st being plugged into my Win7 computer. On a Vista computer, it's Plug-N-Play, no 3rd party drivers needed. Now if I could just find the CD that came with it....
Jim, you cant find any drivers for it? I am suprised it does not work - pretty much anything that ran in Vista will run on 7. I have yet to run into a problem. 7 is working extremely well on my netbook! Loaded easily on it and everything worked without having to go look for drivers. Luckily have about 10 USB DVD drives at my disposal and they work seemlessly with 7 and my Aspire One. I will never put XP back on the netbook unless I absolutely have to - I will purchase the 7 upgrade for sure! I am now almost at the point where I will use my netbook as my main PC.
