General Questions about the Omnia before i buy

first off, im new to the forums so hello everybody!!

im planning on picking up an omnia soon and i have some questions before i buy. main reason i want a iPhone is because of the applications that can be downloaded for free, does the omnia have something similar to this? (keyword: FREE). also can youtube videos be watched on this phone? is the GPS included in the data plan or would that be an extra fee? TIA

PS - this is for a verizon account.

yes to all except gps...
most of the programs you`ll find in the community (this site, modaco.com, ppcgeeks etc) it is some pay apps that are actually worth it like ilauncher...
youtube for me is easy, go to the site it, play the video through win media player. gps...we`re waiting for verizon to unlock it so we can use live search and google maps. it does work out the box for vznav but...you have to pay $10 a month for that.
but this phone is actually PERFECT!

do u mean memory card?
either way, whenever you want an app, and you`ll find TONS of them!
you always want to look for the ".cab" files!
load it to your device, preferably the memory card or my storage, either by downloading from the phone or connecting the phone to the pc and transfer it over, then your ready to go! its walwats suggested to soft reset after you install a new app.

Hi, there. Chizzy gave you some great advice. But if you mean, is there one store, where Microsoft-approved and tested programs are available for download, the answer is no. Verizon does have the the VzApp Store-but when I looked, it didn't have much variety. But just as chizzy said, most of us prefer to look on the Internet. Having a Windows Mobile device requires more initiative but offers more freedom. Apple has actually refused to put some apps in its App Store because they conflict with its own programs and business goals. With freedom comes more risk that a program might not work so well. So enjoying this freedom may mean learning how to backup and restore your device. I do believe you get what you pay for. Some of the best apps cost real money but compared to $70 or $80 a month for the phone $10 to $30 for a really useful program is not a big deal. There are free trial apps for most of the programs that cost real money. Most of us here feel the Omnia is more business-oriented, works better with Outlook, etc. So the cost of apps is a peripheral consideration to the main reason we chose the Omnia - combine business and FUN!!!

Gee! Maybe it was worth being almost late for work to write that comment, then! Thanks, chizzy. I look up to you, Lou, and lots of others on this forum for the technical expertise and broader knowledge that I lack. Thanks for helping us all out.

you can use anything for a ringtone with some creativity because you can just connect your phone to your computer and copy over basically any sound file or song to be a ring tone. I haven't bought one single ringtone for my phone. I just cut snippets of songs I like and copy them to my phone's ringtone folder.

BTW, I know I'm late to this thread, but, I was under the impression that the apps at the Apple iPhone store cost you money?

I kinda agree in the sense that, just becasue there are a "ton" of apps doesn't mean there are a ton of useful or worth while apps.

I mean there are a TON of windows mobile apps, just go to Free Software Downloads and Reviews - Download.com... doesn't mean I'm putting them on my phone.

The thing I like about the Omnia is about 90% of what I would want on my phone to begin with, it's already there.

I mean, consider the Smart Reader... the ability to scan business cards directly into your contacts... and then scan documents and make them editable and it's just sitting preloaded in the phone.

I think I remember remember someone saying there was an app similiar to it for the iphone, but that it wasn't nearly as good especially since the camera is lower quality.

This forum is your best source of info, but I also found the following site very helpful when tweaking the Omnia and considering my options: Verizon Samsung Omnia i910 | KNGUYENTU

I didn't even know there was such an app for WM or the Omnia... I just hold down the end button to unlock my phone... just as little effort.
