"I should also mention SPB Back-up does offer a desktop version which would allow you to sync your back-ups between your phone and pc without the need to have a storage card.[/quote]
I am having no luck at all with Sprite Backup. It installs but won't do anything.
Their website says it is not yet compatible with the Omnia. I have 6.5.4.2 which I believe is the latest.
Most of my other programs I have tried to load don't work properly either. Tried to use Battery Pack Pro. It loads VGA icons that really mess things up. When I downloaded the QVGA icons, the program would not use them. Just showed no icons at all. I am finding my much anticipated Omnia pretty useless about now. Heartbroken so far. I was really looking forward to my new phone. CS says I have 28 days to activate it. If I can't get the PDA stuff to work by then I guess I will have to turn it back in and go back to my trusty (but now seems clunky) old i760.

hi,
i have sprite backup, 6.5.2, and it seems to work fine. also, i don't know where you are seeing that it is not compatible. per their website:
Latest Version: Sprite Backup is 6.5.4
Compatible with all Windows Mobile 5, WM6 and WM6.1 devices - Touchscreen and Non-Touchscreen
this page show what devices they have actual knowledge of, but at the top of the page it still states that it works with ALL WM6.1 devices.
what kind of trouble are you having?
Hmm. That message has changed since I checked it this morning. It clearly said it did not yet support the Omnia but they were working on it.
The PC part of Sprite did not recognize the device. Oddly, the Omnia would back up to the PC if I initiated it from the Omnia. But from the PC side it said I needed to Authorize, but would not allow any entries in the necessary fields. I am going to hook it up again and see if any difference.
OK, now it says I can restore, but I can't see how to choose which backup file to restore--there are several. I select merge level 2 and click OK, but nothing happens.
Let's discuss backup and restore programs and problems here. If we need separate threads for Sprite, Spb, Resco backup as time goes by, maybe our mod Miata492 can help us out but one thread should do for starters.
Ok so let me start off by saying I use SPB Backup. I assume it works just as good as any other back up program. Even makes executable files so you don't need to reinstall the program after a hard reset if you don't want to. When I first got this phone I backed up my i760's contacts & SMS/MMS for transfer. I figured the phones are different so you just can't back up & transfer everything, but text and contacts should be fine. Anyway after the transfer everything seemed cool. . . Then I tried to receive a MMS. I could send just fine, but I could not receive. Well it would tell me I have a new message, but when I went to look at it nothing was not there. *HARD RESET* - Good thing I back up my contacts on the PC also.
Moral of the story. . .Who needs 300 old text messages that say "Wut U doin bro" and "Call you n a sec"? Apparently not me
Sprite backup 6 does not support Omnia. Maybe this is why I'm having trouble
I know everyone thinks I'm crazy. But below is the message on the Sprite Backup support site on Saturday, December 20 2008.
Support: Sprite Backup 6

Reason: Removed extraneous information
I have put Sprite Backup to the full test and it works

I have had a complete lockup and had to hard reset and restore my phone from a backup of Main Memory made with Sprite Backup v6.5.2. I restored from a self-executing executable on my microSDHC card. Everything has been working fine except for two minor things.
I occasionally get a warning that WM can't find SpriteBackupStart.exe or something like that-plan to reinstall Sprite Backup to fix this. And doing the actual backup itself, I got a warning that I was critically low on storage in Main Memory (but that's a separate issue-need to look out for huge Downloads of Windows Media Player video to Main Memory).
I never use the Migrate feature in Backup and Restore programs because, hey, I'm migrating to a brand new device and what do those programmers, no matter how clever, already know all the migration issues for a brand new device? I completely reinstall everything. Migrate my PIM information by synchronizing with Exchange server. Migrate alot of stuff like eWallet, Spb Finance, PhatNotes by synchronizing the desktop program to my new handheld.
My wife wants to go shopping and do other Xmas stuff (even Chinese ladies love shopping!) so I'm sorry not to give a more complete answer. But I put Sprite Backup to the test and it came through for me.
OK, the difference seems to be that you are using the device and its storage cards. I may try that. I am trying to bring up the PC version that I have been using to do backups since early on with the i760. Can't even back up, much less migrate. I have given up on the migrate and have done it the old fashioned way thru the storage card cabs and activesync. Took a while but Got 'er Done. Thanks for all your help.
Great forum!

I upgraded from Sprite Backup v6.5.2 to v6.5.4. I installed to \My Storage (repeatedly). Each attempt met with the message that the install was unsuccessful. Yet I can launch and run Sprite Backup. I launched the desktop Sprite Backup Manager and started a backup through Active Syn to my desktop. It worked and the main hangup was Active Sync failed after the soft reset done to run Sprite in Safe Mode with competing processess killed. The work around is just to unplug your USB cable for some period of time, plug it back in and hope it kicks Active Stink back into life (another thread complaining about Active Stink is here http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/samsu...after-bit.html
Had to do this both for the backup itself and to get the report on the desktop at the completion of backup when the Omnia resets again.
Used the Sprite Explorer to browse my backup to my desktop, open an Excel spreadsheet of gym workouts, etc.
So Sprite Backup v6.5.4 works with an Omnia i910. Just takes some patience to outwait Active Stink. Good for making lots of coffee or having a beer or two or three.
The Sprite folks probably need to clean up their act a bit, too. Who knows what the unsuccessful install message really means? Maybe I'll find out someday.
I initiated and ran a backup from the Omnia to the PC and it looks like it went OK. I am just not able to do anything with the program from the PC side now. I have emailed Sprite with the problem. I don't think my issue is with the Activesync. Must be something else.
Although the PC side of the SPB backup still does not work for me at all, I was able to back up to the PC by initiating the backup on the Omnia itself. However, the backup report contained the following message:
"Warning : File could not be included \POCKETFS.SYS"
Don't know what this file does but if I have to do a hard reset and this file isn't restored, what will be the consequences? I did some research and it is reported that this message appears, not only with Sprite Backup but also with SPB, Resco, and every other backup program tried. It appears to be something about the Omnia because all references to this backup warning were reported on the Omnia.
What about it guys? Are our back-ups in jeopardy? How should we deal with it if they are?

I successfully restored from a backup without having POCKETFS.SYS included in the backup (based on getting the same warning message).
It seems to be a file involved in interfacing to FLASH memory (\My Storage?). SAMSUNG Semiconductor - products - Flash - Flash Software
It is a Samsung-specific file system. That's why you wouldn't get it on a Touch Pro, XV6800, etc.
According to advice on an Spb Guru, you can either unlock the file so it can be included in the backup or ignore it (my guess is that it's recreated from the organization of flash memory but I should check in spite of the warning whether it's being included in my backup). Spb Club :: View topic - pocketfs.sys error message
So what backup programs are working correctly now? It's high time I got a backup program, but don't want to bother with ones that don't work. I want one that will restore everything including programs I have installed and registry edits would be nice too, but not a must have.
If you have one of the following programs and have successfully restored everything using a VZW i910 Omnia can you quickly mention which one, whether it installs programs, and whether it worked for you in general. Any other thoughts are welcome as well. Thanks.
SPB
Sprite
Resco
Other - Please Identify
BTW, why can't I just copy every single file on my Omnia using ActiveSync? Wouldn't this be the same thing, but free?

I know Sprite Mobile Backup works. I've done a complete restore 4 or 5 times. You could check out the trial version of each program, see what it's limits are. Since Sprite Backup works, if you can do a full restore from that within 15 days, you could then try backing up and restoring your Omnia with each of the others. Get the one that works best for you. If nothing else, you should be able to restore your Omnia as it was before you started testing programs with Sprite.
I haven't backed up using Active Sync for a long time but when I look in Windows Mobile Device Center in Windows 7, there is the following message:
4/20/2007
Backing up and restoring information is available only for devices running Windows Mobile 2003 or Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition software.
A WM backup program also allows you to backup your device when you are not around your desktop PC by backing up to \My Storage or the micro SD card. The former is ~2x faster, the latter will survive a hardware failure other than crushing the entire phone.
