Verizon contracts require Internet fees for this phone
Verizon has changed their contracts.
If you do an upgrade to this new phone you will be forced to buy either the unlimited data plan (44.99) or Email and Web for smartphone (29.99).
You no longer have a choice to not select a internet option for this phone. This is also true for the blackberry models.
I contacted Verizon sales on the phone and was informed of this. If you do an upgrade via their website you will also be required to do this to purchase the phone.

Following in the footsteps of AT&T with the iPhone. Can't get an iPhone without a 2-year contract with data plan. When you get an Omnia at the incredible deal of $150 or whatever, you are paying for it with the data plan you are forced to take. Give away razors to sell the blades - only in this case you have to buy the Vzw store brand blades.
good news is if you were paying the $44 and don't use an enterprise server (which non blackberry or non exchange peeps don't) then u only have to pay $29.99.....
If this is the case, it's the end of me and Verizon. I get a new phone on December 29th. If I can't get a Windows Mobile phone without a data package, I'm gone.

I noticed that when I tried to upgrade my phone earlier today. Before I can continue, I had to make a selection between two data packages. I called customer service and told them that I didn't need a data package, and all I was interested in was the phone. The representative was very understanding and processed my order without me having to add a data plan. She even threw in expedited shipping, so I should be getting my phone tomorrow morning.
Personally, I can't imagine using the phone without a data plan. For me it is not a PDA phone, it is a network phone. I use the browser 3x as often as I use the actual phone to make calls. Using only WiFi would leave me high and dry all the time as I am rarely near a public WiFi area and don't like using public WiFi as a rule anyway.
With my current SCH-i760, I almost never use WiFi even when I am home except if I need more speed for transfers or something. Even then I still don't use it much.

WATCH YOUR DATA USAGE or you will regret it!!! After couple days of use, do a #DATA and find out how many Kbs were used. This has been a problem in the past with PDA phones. They still will ping the network and even just OPEN IE (or Opera) will ping the network. If you don't have that feature code on your plan you will get charged by the kb!! So be carefull!

I've been screaming for an "Everything" plan like Sprints on Verizon since they introduced this crappy policy! Everyone call Verizon and bitch!
I thought Verizon had a plan that included unlimited minutes, unlimited txt/mms and unlimited data. The only thing is that it costs about $50 more than my current plan/data package and I never go over my minutes so it didn't make sense for me.
Maybe I'm confused, but I swear they started offering this about 6 months ago.

Now see, I'm on the other side of this. When I would need internet on this, I'm 9 out of 10 times in a wifi hotspot. It could be at home, a friend's home, Tim Horton's, whatever. If I'm not sitting down in one of these spots, I probably don't have the opportunity to check my e-mail or look around on the internet (as in I'm driving, I'm at work, etc.). It just doesn't make sense to me to spend the $30 or whatever a month for the maybe 10 minutes a month I would use it.
I think the reason for the data plan requirement (besides profits of course) is the problem of dealing with irate customers who run up exhorbitant bills on pay-as-you-go plans (some as high as $2-4K I've read) so if you really don't want data see if they will waive the data plan requirement if you allow them to put a data block on your phone instead. They could do that with the old plans and phones, maybe they would have to activate your new phone with a data plan to get it through the computer activation process and then take it off manually and put a data block on.

They still do. But it’s for certain phones - and unfortunately ours isn't one of them. I have 3 PDAs on my account and 2 of them have a data plan. The 3rd is my son's and I don't want (and won't) shell out $30 for him to surf the web at school!
We should all contact Verizon about this policy. It's BS that you have to buy a data plan with a non-Blackberry phone. I am stuck in a contract but as soon as its done, no more Verizon for me.

Krelvin, i agree 100% here. being a PDA phone i think requires connectivity more than just the Free public hotspots.
I have basically never used the WIFI on any of my phones, other than to test and see if the wifi is there.
I'm not sure why everyone is so hung up on not paying for the data plan.

First, Welcome to PDAPHONEHome. .
Are you saying that Blackberries should require a data plan because they are "blackberries"? and the "windows PDA phone should not require one as they are not "Blackberries"?
I don't have an issue with VZW mandating a charge for service that is basically required to operate a piece of equipment 100%. It all comes down to "Offer and Acceptance". As you stated, you don't want to accept that, and you will go to the Competition.
VZW made a huge profit last quarter (1.6BB) as compared to Sprint (-330MM). I want to be with a company that can stay around. It's amazing, in the tough times we are in (in the US Peoples Republic) that a company can have a 30% increase in Profits from a year prior. Maybe they are doing something right. IMHO
You bet they are doing something "right". When their CEO says "profit at all costs" and proceeds to implement this corporate mantra by using older depreciated tech in it's new offerings (eg 400 MHz cpu vs 624), maximizing ARPU by overcharging for basic service, requiring lucrative data service for activation, putting on surcharges for "features" designed into the device through crippling, omitting or locking down, and thereby seeing their coffers overflow at sky-high profit margins by massive subscriber influx and capitulation to these draconian Terms of Service because the company "owns" the network (spectrum), then yes indeed unregulated capitalism is on display at it's very finest. AT&T is no different.
