Though I have not tried this on any other phone, some research brings this question:
Would it be possible to change the esn that Verizon is looking for to something to say like, my current i730 perhaps, to avoid the data plan demand for the i910?

If you search, you'll find a Vzw person visting this forum has already answered that question: the answer is NO. You can't successfully hide the identity of the phone.

I imagine that you would be referring to me?!?!?! Anyway...the official answer is NO, unless..... Legality aside, there is one way to accomplish this, however I use the data, so it doesn't matter to me anyway. Like I said before, be creative! I will not devulge the info (unless I really like you! haha (jk)) but keep in mind that although the Omnia is awesome and new, it is still a windows mobile phone and as such, principles and ideas from other windows mobile phones apply here. Old ideas still work....OOOOOOLLLLDDDDD ideas...there, thats it. You are on your own for the rest...good luck

Sorry, Nate! I only remember the "NO" but not the "but" - maybe if should have been, "no....BUT! but even then, as each day passes, neurons are dying left and right, so I'm not sure it would have helped someone like me!

haha, I hear ya, but its all good. Yeah, the method works...it took a heck of a lot of time to get it just right. I have my kid brother using an omnia without data at all!! Its out there, but its just a pain to do and it took a lot of looking in the right places. Anyway, JIM LEWIS, how ya been? I havent been on here in a while. Been working 60+ hour weeks lately...
Have you done the ROM flash? I did it and its pretty good. I am actually reading up and going to start cooking. I used to do some cooking privately (EG, not posted anywhere on here, but I did do some custom ROMS for some members here) way back in days of old when I first joined. (HINT HINT PEOPLE AS TO FIND WHERE THE PROCESS!!) So I am looking forward to getting back into cooking!
Nate

Well, Nate. Maybe you would know. One thing I'm thinking about before taking the plunge on the ROM update. If there is an official firmware upgrade coming along for the Omnia, what are the chances that the software will look to see what the previous version of ROM installed is before updating? I guess that wasn't a problem with the last official update for the i730. I had SuperDave's WM5 on my i730 just as it died and could still overwrite it, no problem, with the official Vzw WM5.
Thank you for the update. I 'thought' I understood correctly! While I may not have the understanding to catch your hints, I appreciate the information.

In Modaco, echew's opinion on being able to apply the official ROM upgrade over the unofficial now on the loose:
QUOTE(nutty123 @ Apr 9 2009, 14:00)
Out of curiousity, what will happen when/if VZW does in fact release the update? If we choose to install the VZW update will it just overwrite this ROM? Or could it potentially brick it? Or? I am curious if the current ROM that everyone is using is the pseudo-official release or if it's just part of it and that VZW/Samsung are going to include other stuff in the release also.
I, like others, have all the stuff, but just waiting to see if I get enough courage to do it. -end quote of nutty123
It's a firmware updater and to my knowledge doesn't care what’s installed on the device already. We went through this with the I730 and I760 and subsequent updates from VZW went smoothly... For me anyways... -end echew quote

It's pretty much a safe bet that there will be no issue at all flashing with a new official version. Here's why:
1) look at apple. I hate 'em, but they do have a good model to go off of. If you jailbreak/unlock your iphone, you void your warranty. Now, when you update your phone, it really doesn't care what version of phone you currently have. It does relock it and un-jailbreak it, but it will update.
2) phones get refurbished. how? Well, when someone replaces it under warranty, or insurance, it is shipped off to a refurbishing plant. At that point, if they have a modded rom on there, then the phone is fubar'd if the current official rom checks the status and declines it do to a custom rom. That would then mean that vzw or whomever the carrier is, would have to shell out a lot more for a new device when someone needs to swap it out! Looking at the VZW trend, they don't take to kindly to giving away unnecessary money.
It would make sense that the official update would not care as to what rom is loaded. It may check, but not care. Now, it may relock gps, but with the cracked rom we have now, it should be fairly easy to fix that.
just my two cents!
Nate

Thanks, Nate. I took the plunge, anyway, no matter what. Didn't want to miss the fun and adventure. They say the thrill of gambling is the unexpected - nothing like watching your flash proceed or, OTOH, thinking you've bricked your phone for cheap thrills! Thanks to RGSEKULA and ChrisColumbus for distilling the stuff over at Modaco and making it easy!
jumped into adrn2.0(CF03) 6.5 rom today, must say I am very impressed with 6.5 and titanium, not sure if I will stick with CHome, but gonna give it a try for a few days before running back to PointUI
