Start with the setup guides (Found in the MRailing Guides, or linked to in my signature) in the stickies, this will help you learn about the phone and what it can do. Use it with WM2003 and play with it, and then read the WM5 FAQ in the stickies and decide if you want to go to WM5 (I suggest it), then read that setup guide and follow it. This will get you going. Then use the phone. Don't try loading a bunch of crap on it until you get used to what it can do, and find out what you "don't" like about it, and then after a week, look for ways to fix that.
Then after you have used it for around a month and got the feel for it, then start looking for more ways to "enhance" it.
So use it and learn about it, then tweak it. You really should get a feel for how it works "stock" so that you know how it works and if the tweak you have loaded actually helps or hurts you, and if the stability problems you might run in to are because of that new software you just loaded or if it's the phone.
So I wouldn't sync it up with WM2003, but at least see how it works, then download ActiveSync 4.2 or 4.5 and WM5 from Verizon, and load WM5. Read the last post in the WM5 FAQ sticky at the top, which talks about what you need to know before you upgrade.
Once you upgrade, follow my setup guide, which is step by step.
Then just continue to be apart of this community and read and learn. That is the best way to find out about new stuff, as the longer you stick around reading and posting, you will learn more, and when new things come up, you will be there to try it. Plus knowing how your i730 works before you tweak and load more software makes you really know what's going on...
And the first piece of software to check out when you are ready is PhoneAlarm by pocketmax.net. Which you can find TONS of information in the forum.
Here is a thread with just about the same question as you:

well this weekend i will be getting a brand new i730... its going to be my first pda phone and im pretty excited about it. i have done some looking around on this thread and had some basic questions. i am pretty comp savy, but new to this platform
Upgrading to WM5- this seems like a must? and whats the best way to do it?(keep in mind i dont have a data plan on the phone)
tethering- what is it?
how much of the functionality am i going to lose by not having a data plan? (i just cant afford the extra $50 a month)- i understand i will lose anything that has to do with the internet, but im sure there are tons of other things i can use it for (i.e. remote control)
Using the wifi capabilities can i connect to my home network and use the net on the phone without it going through VZW (since i have no data plan, is this a way i can access the net?)
one of the most important things for it to do for me is sync with Outlook in order to be able to download my schedule off my desktop comp, or upload changes to the desktop comp. how will i set this up? will there be software that will explain it? i know i should probably just read the manual but i have been trolling the forums for a bit and just thought i would ask (it has helped me get over my WoW addiction)
Thanks for any advice

I figured I'd save mrailing the trouble and just link you to this thread from yesterday. (I was tempted to post a thread of my own like this weeks ago, but soon learned that it wasn't the best idea)
I also just got this phone (I'm guessing we'll see more than a few newbies show up here) and I'm loving it thus far. Read through as much of the stickies and their many links as possible and there is a wealth of information you'll just have to take some time to sift through it all. I'll answer what I can -
Tethering is connecting to a laptop via a usb cable and using the i730 as a modem. If this is something you don't need forget about it.
Able to connect to wifi at my home and work so I'm happy as a clam. As far as syncing with Outlook - this is pretty easy and was done rather automatically once I installed ActiveSync (google and d-load from Microsoft). Check out the stickies and do some searching. Good luck fellow i730 newb! - we're lucky to have this place and the dedication of mrailing and SD - without this wellspring of info I likely would have not had the guts to give the i730 a shot)

Actually it was from this morning, and I am going to merge these threads...

Also to the OP (Original Poster) TheYoke, please don't "edit" your post after someone has responded like that and remove the information from it. It makes it so people can't follow the thread. If you want to post something else, than just post it as a follow up to thread, and don't delete the content of your message.

I never would have had if I had seen you reply. I thought I was killing the thread by editing my origonal post. In fact, if you look at the timestamps, I posted at 7:14, then edited it at 7:45. Your reply post was 7:58. You must have been typing already, hehe.

why would you use WIFI to log into the home Internet? WIFI connects to the Internet on its own. If you are at a coffee shop that hosts a free WIFI then you can just surf the net free. Unless you want data from a home server I can't see why you would go that route
