One Year Later Hack does not appear to work
Hi Mike... So its one year later and WMD is up to 6.1 something. I discovered your hack and tried it. The Sync.ico replacement with a proper phone image certainly works to make the WMD startup look like we'd like, but following your directions and tyring permutations on them fail to keep the custom image stable upon connection.
Yes, I put the right icon in the Windows directory -- and plenty of other places too. I was careful to remove all the device references -- even from WMD iteself -- and watched the new drivers load up with the icon in plac on the phone -- but alas it just keeps reverting to the generic phone image once I connect.
I suspect that something new has happened with the latest version of WMD center. My phone is an i830w from Sprint. Did Microsoft create some new methodology for this to work or maybe just drop the feature with the latest release?
Which reminds me ...a bit off topic but perhaps food for a new thread: I found a service manual for Samsung i830 and it clearly shows a GPS receiver and the antenna inside. Maybe the i830w has this inside (I don't want to open it to see). The service manual even has a test procedure if you have the right gear. Samsung and Sprint, however, keep saying its all a mistake -- there is no real GPS on board just E911 locator. Is this true? The early product ads suggest its not. I cannot find a thread that fully explores this topic, but I suspect there really is a GPS radio in this phone waiting to be unleashed. Do you know?
