"Unable to obtain a server-assigned IP address. Try again later or enter an IP address in Network settings."
For some reason, sometimes when I put my i730 with WM5 into the sync cradle, it displays an error dialog with this message and with the caption "Pocket PC Networking".
I probably have screwed up some setting(s) somewhere in experimenting with my network settings.
Can anyone suggest where I should look to fix this?
Thanks!

Can anyone offer any suggestions about this problem?
Thanks,

Unfortunately that doesn't make it go away for long, for me.

I found a solution that seems to have worked! It is here and it says, essentially, to edit the registry as follows:
To fix the error:
Unable to obtain a server-assigned IP address. Try again later or enter an IP address in Network settings.
Fire up your registry editor then head to:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\RNDISFN1\Parms\TcpIp]
Set AutoCfg to 1
Set EnableDHCP to 0
Soft reset the device and there should be no further errors!

I don't know. I just know that it solved the problem for me.

TyTN is the HTC branded version of the Hermes, i.e the new 3g version of the Wizard.
Anyway, after a soft reset, the orginal values return, AutoCfg: 0 in particular

All I can tell you is that on my device, which is an i730 with WM5, that does not happen. The value remains "1" after I set it that way.

Changed the registry as stated above and was able to connect via EVDO however I continue to get the "Unable to ....." pop up box in the center of the screen. If I tap the x it goes away BUT ideally it should not pop up at all. Any help, insight, fixes are appreciated. Thanks!!
I have to ask and this may sound stupid. Is this error message just popping up? Are you able to send/receive or go on-line after this message appears? What software are you running?
The reason I ask is that I also receive this message but only at work on a secure (overly) network. I have found that in my case that is Soti pocket controller that is causing the message on mine. While this does not affect my browsing abilities it prevents me from taking control via I.P. It still doesn't actually prevent me from doing anything.

'Tis better to be silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.
It is just a pop up box. It does not prevent any usage or connections or messaging. It appears on mine randomly (the worst, I know). Whether its using the phone app, PIE what have you. As I stated it doesn't hinder the device, but I would love to know what makes it appear and why.
I am getting this same error when I cradle my i730 with wm5. When I tried to open PIE while in the crable I cannot open any websites. On the PC the phone is connected to, when I do an ipconfig /all the second LAN connection that activesync creates is getting an IP address of 169.254.2.2 which is the type of address a device gets when there is no DHCP server found. However my router is dishing out addresses to 2 other comptuers on my network just fine.
I have tried the reg hack found at the top of this post and that didn't help at all. Anyone have any thoughts??
Did the small regedit and no more pop up for me, havent tested the wifi yet to see if it changes anything, ill do it tonight at home though. On a side note the pop-up only happens when im connected to Active Sync on my desktop. WM5 and WinXP Pro, not sure why it only does it on docking, but its not really a problem more of an annoyence.
