WM5 New Menu

TrickyFrenchman found a freeware that allows a NEW menu to be programmed onto a softkey.

Has anyone out there tried it yet? Will it work with Pocket Informant?

Link: http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/wm5newmenu.shtml

Here is the description:

WM5NewMenu is the small app for Windows Mobile 5, originally created to substitute "New menu" that was presented on the previous versions of Windows Mobile (PocketPC 2002, 2003). It consists of two parts: the menu launcher and the settings applet.
Basically, it is configurable app launcher, with several preconfigured actions to create new items, such as SMS, MMS, Word document, Note, etc. These preconfigured actions were chosen to do same things as did the actions from original "New menu".

As app is fully configurable, new items/actions can be added via simple, intuitive, GUI. The items can be disabled or removed, their order can be changed.

Additionally, WM5NewMenu supports original "New menu" items. Some are by default in system, as they were before, but in Windows Mobile 5 they are not used. Default actions which come with WM5NewMenu do the same thing. But 3rd party application can add own "New menu" extension and therefore can be useful to have possibility to use such extension.

Basic features:
- Lauching by selectable today key.
- Simple configuration.
- Support for original "New" items.
- Landscape support.

Update Description:
v1.0.0 beta:
- Major rewrite of the Settings part.

Sort of the same response I got when I brought it up a while back...it's not a popular issue. You may have to be the guinea pig!

I just installed it, set up a few favorites and removed SPB today plugin. Gave me back a lot of desktop space.

Easy to set up items. Browses for search strings or by type. I like it that it also has the ability to allow command-line paramaters.

It hasn't interfered with any other applications that use the soft key I assigned it to.

I'll report back in awhile if something should go amiss....

Well, maybe out of boredom, I decided to try this out. (I really seem to have the need to constantly tweak...) So far I like it and I haven't noticed any issues. I'll probably keep it for awhile.

Thumbs up

I'm giving this a try as well in combination with the Soft Key program that allows you to specify soft key functionality on the Today Screen. I used Soft Key to assign the Right soft key to my email and left the Left soft key unassigned. Then I used the WM5NewMenu program to assign the Left soft key to New Items. This makes one handed entry of new items much easier. So far so good.

This link goes to the programmers site and he has screenshots posted. All it does is change a soft key (your choice) to New, and the new menu from WM2003 pops up.

EDIT: Actually you can name it anything you want...

How would it work WITH the Today Plugin from SPB?

Ok so it changes any place you see "New" as a softkey to have a new selection of your choice?

Dominick, I think you're overthinking it. It has nothing to do with today screen programs loaded onto your i730.

While on the today screen, it changes one of your soft keys to "new" let's say (You can anem it anything you like). You press that soft key and a menu pops up allowing you to create a new contact or a new appointment, etc. That's all it does. Remember the little new button at the bottom of the today screen on WM2003. This does the same thing, but is a little more customizable.

TKD, I have no idea if this will load into PI. Time will tell.

One small bug I noticed. If you press the screen soft key, the window pops up, but will not minimize. You have to press the hard key associated with that soft key to minimize the window.

PI Compatibility Test: Will not create new contact or appt. Will, however, create new note.

Result: Uninstalled.

As an additional note, I've spoken with Saman, the author of this program, and he informs me he is working on a new version that will address some known issues and offer some different configuration options. I don't know anything about PI, so I don't know if this will solve your issue TDK.
