First I suggest reading the FAQ listed in the first link, as it explains a lot.
EVDO has this ability already built in, so let me explain what it does and currently what 1x does, and you will see the difference.
EVDO if you receive a call while connected and moving data, it will put the data dormant, and let you receive the call.
1x if you receive a call while connected and moving data, it will send the call to voicemail, and won't ring in or do anything.
So if you have this on your account, it will automatically cause the 1x network to go dormant, and you will receive the call. So this will benefit you if you live in a 1x network and you want push e-mail. Without this, if you receive a call while you were downloading e-mail, then it would go to voicemail.
So with this, 1x now works very much like EVDO, except for speed, so you get the benefits of EVDO (again, except for the speed), and this gets rid of the flaws of the 1x network...

whats the benefit to having this? i dont think i understand wat this is about.
Before this update, if you are in a non-EVDO area and your phone is using a data connection (activesync with exchange server, internet explorer, etc.) an incoming call would go straight to voicemail. In an EVDO (high speed) area, an incoming voice call would temporarily stop the data connection and the phone rings.
Once this update goes into effect, incoming calls will break through the data connection in non-EVDO areas. If you use data on your phone and don't live in an EVDO area, this will be a nice improvement.
That is strange. Here near Buffalo, NY, where we have never enjoyed the benefit of EVDO, my incoming calls ALWAYS rang through to me when i was online, ever since I got the phone in August 05. Whether using the phone on the internet OR as a modem, if a call came were made to my number, the phone would ring, and I would answer and talk. Now, in the last few weeks, the phone never rings when Im online anymore. The voice mail indicator will just announce itself. I THOUGHT this was now happening since my phone did a hard reset all on its own a few weeks ago. Since then, it has been acting very strange...but maybe it wasnt the phone!
well i tryed it and i got beepping sounds and my phone hanged up didnt get "call can not be completed as dialed" just liked when u update your PRL sounds then hangs up. i didnt try it out yet everyone i know is asleep it is 5am now so will try in the morning i'll turn evdo off and put 1x on and try it out will report back if its working. oh yeah im from cali fremont california..
This is slightly off topic, but I thought I'd mention it. I was pretty sure that a hack was necessary to use Wifi and the phone at the same time. I'm running the official WM5.0 and last night I was surfing on the web while talking on the phone. Is this ability built into WM5.0 and is the SD hack only necessary for SE2003?
WiFi and phone can be used at the same time with WM5 straight out of the box, no hack necessary as it was for WM2003...

I just dialed the numbers here (NYC) and I heard nothing. It connected for about 3-4 seconds then ended the call. Not sure if anything happened. No message and no beep.

Live and work in Chesapeake. In the southern portion of Chesapeake, Verizon drops from EVDO to 1X. Checked this morning at work in the 1X zone and it works great. I'm going to flip over to 'push' email and see how the day goes.
Los Angeles/Ventura County - I get, "Your service does not include use of this feature. For more information please call customer service at star 611."
