Just received an extremely prompt reply from Microsoft AND a fix! (at least for me.) The MS fellow said that he'd post here so I'll leave it to him to distribute "the fix." It's a small reg key fix and it worked first time off the bat after I made the change.

To all those who have had problems with connecting to the internet from the device when upgrading from ActiveSync 4.1 to 4.2:

ActiveSync version 4.2 made a change to how it interacts with the Windows networking stack to use Layered Service Providers (LSPs) on outgoing Desktop-Pass-Through connections. This allows for improved compatibility in environments where connections to the internet must be passed through these LSPs (ISA Proxy is one such example).

Unfortunately, it appears this change has caused some issues for a small segment of users who have LSPs that interfere with ActiveSync communication.

There is a registry key fix which will essentially remove this change.

Please download and rename the attached text file with the .txt extension to the .reg extension. In other words, change the file LSPvalue.txt to LSPvalue.reg. Afterwards, please double click on the newly renamed .reg file and click on the "Yes" button.

    This should resolve your issues.

    Thanks,

    Edington

In upgrading from AS 4.1 to 4.2, should I install 4.2 over 4.1 or uninstall 4.1 before installing 4.2?

I too have a problem with pass thru, but, only at home. When connected at work with a data cable, I am able to sync with exchange server thru AS. When I connect to my home PC via the cradle at home, it will not sync to exchanbge server thru AS.

    Home setup:
    Windows XP Pro
    Cable modem
    No router
    Windows firewall on

Is it possible to sync with the exchnage server thru AS on my home PC?

I applied the registry patch but it did not fix it for me. I also rebooted after the registry to see if that was needed. No change. I am running W2K SP4 fully patched w/ AS4.1/ & WM5.

I believe the reg patch is for AS4.2, not AS4.1.

How are you accessing the Exchange server? Is it on the public Internet with SSL encryption, or are you tunneling through a VPN to access it? The VPN could conceivably be tunneling your primary connection, but not any connections that are "sharing" your primary connection via TAP/TUN.

General wisdom says you should uninstall 4.2 first, but I think MS manages AS versions correctly with MSI. So when you install a new version, it "implicitly" uninstalls the old version before putting in the new one.

As LarryH pointed out, the resolution is posted, check post #22. Sometimes you just need to read a little...
