I've spoken with 3 customer services folks and 2 from DTS, all of whom saying that Broadband Access Connect is only available on Treo devices. Do you know something they don't?
I just don't know where to begin with that statement. First, broadband access connect is not only available on Treos (there's only one Treo it IS avalable on - that's the 700P) - it's available for several voice handsets, 2 Blackberries, and as of the WM5 update, the i730.
It's a supported device for broadband access connect - if you have issues getting it added, have them check the www.vzam.net site. At any rate - while I'm still loyal to my 6600, I know you can get the broadband access connect for a i730 - I'm sitting next to one connected that way right now.

IanArgent, thanks for the reply -- on call #4 I found a someone with a brain. He found the service quickly, and even mentioned vzam.net before I could. Admittedly, this is my experience with Verizon over the past 12 years, ask them the same question three times and get at least four different and conflicting answers....
Unfortunately, the only thing they are showing in the pricing table is $59.99/month -- a little rich for my tastes. They claim that it's $15.99 for Blackberries, but $59.99 for everything else. I'll give my corporate sales droid a call tomorrow and see what she has to say.
I believe it sould be the same cost as the Blackberry - as it's an add/on to the PDA/Smartphone plan. (If you don't have the unlimited PDA/Smartphone plan, it'd be the $60, from what I gather.)
I don't pay the bills for the one I was messing with, so I don't know the details (belongs to the company I work for - I was setting it up for some testing).

Am I the only one who can't get past the Request Copy Error? Tried ports 1 through 10 and still is won't go away. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can anyone help? I am trying to downgrade my moms phone (power user mom)! I get to the point where it is in PDA Emergency Mode, and up pops a little pop up that says this is a non compatible usb device. I have tried several times. I have even tried finding drivers that would work while it is in the PDA emergency mode, with no luck. PLEASE HELP
The usb error states that one of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it.

OK so I did this on my old unit which has to go back to vzw without too much trouble. I've been at it an hour now and I cant get it work. According to the pST software im connected on com16 (I have bluetooth and tons of things thats why i have so many com ports). I'm following the instructions and I've gotten slick at reseting the device while its in the cradle w/ a specially bent paper clip. Still no go...
Help?

COM16 is probably too high. If you can remove one of the devices on a lower com port so that your phone can connect to something in the single digit range, it will probably work on the first try...

Need help setting up your i730/i830 or other WM2003/WM5 Phone, as well as the other hacks I have done, check out the MRailing Guides and Links
OK, I'm going to try on another computer tonight and see if I have better luck. I wonder if I'd have better luck w/ a sync cable instead of my crazy bent paper clip scheme. I should sell the paper clip thing, I spent so much time bending it to the perfect angle so I could just give it a little tug and it would reset without comming out of the cradle. I cant believe there isn't a simpler way...

Ok, it took 6 phone calls (really), three discussions with Wireless Data support and 7 with customer service, but I finally got them to admit that they *do* provide tethering support for $15.99/month if you already have unlimited data. The solution seems to be finding a competent person in DTS, then get them to discuss the issue with customer service for you. Expect to spend quite a bit of time on hold -- I've been on the phone for nearly 30 minutes and I'm not done yet....
What a nightmare! Now I'm starting to remember why I bailed from Verizon after 10+ years. If T-Mobile had decent reception and a PDA phone like the i730 I never would have come back.

Ok, I lied. Now customer service is saying "We don't support tethering with PDA devices". Ever *after* I told them to go look at vzam.net which says they do. And after another round on hold they say "We might be able to do it for $35/month -- I'll have to check".
Those of you who have done this, how did you get the service? Are you really getting it for $15.99/month?
Thanks to superdave for figuring this out. Thanks to Cr0n_J0b for documenting so thoroughly. Here's a couple of things that occur to me, someone maybe not as skilled as everyone else on the thread:
This is a good thing to do right after upgrading. If you upgrade and do any sort of customization, setting up, etc., you will lose it (as Dave warns). I recommend doing this right before you follow mrailing's setup instructions for wm5
You know how you're not supposed to use a USB hub? Dude, it turns out those USB ports on your laptop docking station are considered to be on a hub!
If you're like me, you don't have any fancy aftermarket cables for your phone that allow you to reboot it while hooked up. This means that you are doomed to the paperclip solution! Bend a paperclip to hook it in around the cradle into the phone to be able to press the reset button when necessary. This takes some fiddling. Another fun fact: you must have the power disconnected from the cradle while doing this, or else you can't reboot and get into emergency mode.
The threatening message about checking your USB port is to scare away the lilly-livered. PST seems to choose the right USB port.
Be prepared to try a few times. It's pretty hard to do this on the first try.
I will mention for those still having problems with this. I couldn't get mine downgraded after a few weeks of attempts. I did, however, get PDANet, dropped a few bucks, and it does work quite nicely. Some full screen applications struggle while it is running, so I wouldn't recommend it for gaming, but it does work fine for everything else. Not to mention, I've had very few disconnects. Tethering before, I was disconnecting quite often. I would recommend it if you just can't get it downgraded. It was $35 for the serial I believe, one time only. I think it was worth it.
