I doubt you selected the wrong image to get stuck with YE05, as that image is not available. You probably just didn't get the phone upgraded to the ZB21 first. If you want to get to YH25, you should try upgrading to the full image again, using the verisonid.txt file (in the thread about upgrading from SD WM5 to official), and then try downgrading again.

nitrenium

We really don't know, but from what people have tested, it looks like the only thing you "gain" from downgrading is tethering, and we haven't really noticed anything you loose.

Thanks Mrailing,

I belive I ended up with YE05 because I left out the step of replacing the original dll in the SamsungPST i730 plugin. I will try reupgrading again and downgrading to YH25 again.

I wanted to personally thank you and SD for your invaluable contribution to this forum. Without you most of us would be at the mercy of Verizon.

I am still at wm2003SE and ready to upgrade to "Official" WM5. Is it possible to just prevent the radio upgrade so I don't have to revert back? Or is it better just to go through all the steps of upgrading completely then downgrading radio?

I am currently at YE05 but can upgrade first using Verizons maintenance release to YH25 if that is better.

TIA

I would do the VZW WM5 upgrade it is really easy. Then down grade the radio to YE25. As an other option, you can also stay at the ZB??? vzw radio level and buy PDANet to allow tethering.

Good Luck

Mark

For those who are interested, I tried the newest dot release of pdanet and it now supports my VPN. I reupgraded to the most current phone and now use pdanet. It is remarkably stable and reliable - much more so than basic tethering. Plus I can sync the phone via USB at the same time. This is excellent.

perlmane,

Thanks for the info.
I will be upgrading my device to the VZW WM5 version and buying/insalling PDANet.

perlmane,
Ditto Mark's comments -- I really liked PDAnet when I used the trial, but your VPN experience caused me not to buy it. So, even though I downgraded I think I'm going to buy it. Thanks for the updated info!

Or tether through Bluetooth, which still works fine with BTModem.

I would do the SD WM5 upgrade and stick with that. It doesn't upgrade the radio, just that PDA side. Otherwise you WILL be forced to downgrade the radio.

The version is the same, there is only one difference. The boot "images" or as I like to call them, the pretty splash screens you get when the phone boots up.

I was thinking of that but I have the first release of the radio so if I am going to do an upgrade, I will just do it to the latest version of both the phone and the radio. I dont mind getting PDANet as I only use it on one PC.

It enables you to use VzW for internet access for your PC/laptop. Essentially converts your i730 into a wireless internet modem. Very nice if you lose your internet connection, travel with a laptop, or are in an area with only dial-up internet.

Well...I finally upgraded to the official WM5 tonight. I read all 30-some-odd pages about the install as well as everything else I could find. I thought I did everything right (AS 4.1, virgin PC never loaded with samsung cdma drivers, formated safestore, hard reset, never had SDWM5, etc.etc) but still the install crapped out at the radio install. So now I have WM5 but with the YE05 radio. So I guess I don't have to downgrade. Any reason to upgrade radio to YH25?

Thanks,
Xmurray

bobingv

I'm having a lot of trouble tethering. I have two laptops and tethering works great on one where I don't have ActivSync installed and I'm using the original samsung drivers and WM that came with the i730 (no upgrates). On the other PC that I use for ActivSync I cannot get either the Samsung drivers or pdaNet to connect after the original try. I get Error Message 720 suggesting a PPP misconnect. Both laptops are ThinkPads and both use Access Connection by IBM for internet connections. However, there is some bug somewhere causing a problem. Would upgrading help? Any suggestions? Thnaks in advance!

Downgrade?

Whew!
I decided to go for the WM5, and went for the official version, which is actually very unofficial. (I really doubt VZ will EVER release it)

After reading this entire thread, and others, it looks like it is just as much work to downgrade the radio to restore tethering, then to have installed the SD version of WM5.

Is that true?
And with some risk, right?

If so, I think I will be wipping out my credit card for PDANet for when I might need it.

Thanks much to SD, Mrailing, etc for teaching us so much about what we can do with this little gem!

REQUESTCOPY Failure

Just wanted to post my findings when getting the above error. When doing the PST thing to do the downgrade, I tried COM6, COM3 back and forth. While the phone seemed to respond on either of these ports and the tool seemed to find it, it wasn't until I chose COM5 that I got past this error.

Just thought I'd post this for posterity.

I have searched up and down for the answer to this question, but I have yet to find a good answer. I am having the same issue as many others in that the .img will not load onto the phone. I get to the point where I can reset the phone and it comes up with the "Waiting phone download" screen on the phone with the "[Phone] Download Start" message on the PST. And it just sits there and does not download.

Any advice? There doesn't seem to be a direct answer anywhere on the boards.

Thanks.

I have been unsuccessful at down-grading the phone portion(from the Official VZW version)... I get the PDA Device not found after resetting into emergency mode.... one question though, I have noticed that sometimes when I reset, the white label says "PDA Emergency Mode" and a few times it said "Phone Emergency Mode".... Can anyone shed light on whether this makes a difference....
