mrailing:
thx a ton for the clarification.
if i do not downgrade the radio would i lose any other features?
i'd be willing to pay the extra $15/month to vzw for tethering, however, i may wait a month or two to add that feature. I don't plan to use the tethering frequently.
i am going to add some info i picked up regarding the i730 and tethering with verizon.
hope this helps someone...
let me know if this works.

Not sure how you managed to get this to work easily with Vista, but I had to fight quite a bit, and it never worked from the start until I got pretty deep into troubleshooting with it. So, for those of you who have also been unsuccessfull with setting up your i730 as a USB modem with Vista, I have your answer in the below post... FYI, this is for instructions on setting up your i730 with Windows Mobile 5, as a dial-up modem for your Vista computer...

OK, I have searched long and far to get my i730 to dial out via USB on my Vista with no luck, so I managed to figure it out on my own, and felt compelled to share with everyone else that is or was in the same circumstance.
Here is a recap on basically all I ever found on the web to contribute to setting up my Samsung i730 as a USB modem: (Follow this to get started)
Instructions
1. Unhook the Samsung i730 from the USB connection and do not hook up the phone to the computer until prompted.
2. You have to download and install SCH-I730 MCCI driver (See #11 here in the FAQ) from samsung's web site before it will detect the drivers.
The file you DL from Samsungs web site (icon looks like an egg) will display a dialog box that has a bunch of buttons with question marks on them. Click the bottom left button. This extracts the installation files to a folder. Run setup.exe.
Download MCCI driver
3. Go to the phone app and then press: **PATH (**7284)
4. Select: As the modem through USB
5. NOW PLUG IN YOUR i730 using the usb cable. It shoud detect the modem driver now.
6. You now need to make a new Dial Up Networking connection using the following settings (if you do not know how to make a dial-up connection, please Google it. This is dependant on which Operating System you are using) :
Phone number to Dial: #777
Username entered:
yourtendigitnumber@vzw3g.com
Password entered: vzw
Now, we can continue on making this project work with Vista. I am also using the new Mobile 5 OS on my i730, so
Pocket PC 2003 users may see something different.
For starters, who ever released that driver with Samsung as available to U.S. customers should be shot. The confusing characters in the extraction program (likely created in a diff language) should not be a frustration for us from a huge manufacturer like Samsung. Also, I could not get all of the files to extract regardless of what machine/OS I ran it on, the extraction tool always missed around 5 or so files needed for the installer to work! I downloaded it from 3 different locations, so it looks to be another issue with that installer.
Moving on...One thing that was not clearly explained above, is that the i730's Data Connection must be changed to "As the modem through USB" before it is recognized by your system. I suppose the phone app deal may have done that for you, but I had to make the change manually on my phone by going to: Settings, System, and Data Connection.
After doing so, I set my phone back in its Sync Cradle, and was emmediately prompted by Vista to install the new modem device. This was quite simple, the drivers that actually managed to be extracted earlier worked perfectly. You must of course choose to install these manually during the wizard that begins. Simply point the driver wizard to the driver folder created by Samsungs crappy extractor, and let it install the drivers found.
- Modem Installation
After the drivers install correctly, we need to setup our dial-up connection. Go to the Network and Sharing Center in your Control Panel, and choose "Setup a Network or Connection" on the left. Choose "Set up a dial-up connection" and click next. Fill out the ISP information as described above and choose connect to save it. You will not yet be able to connect, after it fails just ignore and move on...
Making it to this point I figured I was home free finally getting the CDMA modem installed for my phone, however, I received hardware errors each time I attempted to connect. I had to run through an hour or so of troubleshooting, settings, etc. before I figured out the solution.
Vista installs the "Internet Protocol Version 6" (TCP/IPv6) by default and enables it. This will cause issues with our only driver currently available for i730's modem. You must disable this protocol before your phone will successfully connect.
- Disabling TCP/IPv6
Go to the Network and Sharing Center again in your Control Panel. Click on "Manage network connections" on the left. Right click your new dial-up connection, and choose properties. Click on the Networking tab at the top, and then uncheck the "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" option in the window pane. With this unchecked, click OK to save your settings and exit.
From there, you should be good to go! Just double click your dial-up connection to connect. Make sure your phone is cradled, or plugged in, and that the data mode is switched to "As modem through USB" each time you connect.
Please post responses if you have any further problems setting this up, and I always enjoy hearing from those who managed to get it working. Thanks!

Okay, just a quick update. (NOT the person who wrote the above.).
Quick & Dirty way to get the i730 to work as a modem on a Vista PC (laptop, in my case).
Connect the computer to the 'inet. Cable or WIFI is okay, but be connected.
Disconnect phone from crade. Go to Settings - System - Data Connection. Change to "As a Modem thru USB". Connect phone to cradle.
You will be told about new hardware. Let the computer connect to the net and install itself. Twice. Yes, twice. It installs 2 things.
Now, set up the dial-up with <10-digit-phone-number>@vzw3g.com, password vzw.
You're done. That's all there is, and it works well.
