Make sure your i730 isn't trying to dial out while connected. I am using PDANet and I have ZERO issues staying connected. What it sounds like is that your i730 is trying to connect to Verizon to either sync your mail, or pull information (like weather apps), and this can disconnect PDANet.

Make sure you have anything that tries to get to the outside world disabled before tethering...

Thank you for the response mrailing. I have just installed WM5 a few days ago. I have not installed Wireless Sync. The only thing I can think of that could be sending would be messenger and or outlook. I figured that by setting the phone to "Data Only" I would be preventing this. I can not see a function in outlook that would send/rec without me doing something to start this. Do I need to install anything different to make this work.
I activate Activesync 4.5 VIA Bluetooth. Then connect using PDAnet 1.7. If I were to take a guess, I think its activesync that drops. Throughout the connection I can hear activesync periodically play a connection sound. however hearing that doesnt necessarily drop the call. It appears that something goes dormant for a while then reconnects. If I make the connection and don't do anything, I can stay connected for hours. But once i start web surfing I loose the connections in a few moments, if I attempt to download, the connections gone in a flash. Thanks mrailing. You might try getting a USB charge and sync cable (MacMedia.com and ppctech.com both have good solutions). I have no issues tethering, but I do it with a USB cable and not over bluetooth.

I can not believe I spend as many hours as I did trying to figure this out when all I had to do was put it on a cable!!! I must have misunderstood PDANet because I didnt know I could sync VIA USB. Thank you so very much for taking your time in helping. You are now my new God and I will pray to you from now on and ask the almight mrailing for divine interventions. Danny

The bluetooth tethering with PDANet was a recent edition, and it might have been the version before the current one when they implemented it. I have heard of many people having problems with bluetooth syncing and tethering, and I just don't think it's up to par yet.

i have been following this discussion for some time.

i used pda.net on a Palm with much success last year.

i am using WM5 without the phone downgrade. WM5.2.6v.ZB21.14928

i do have two questions - btw - i have read this entire thread.

Do you have to downgrade your phone to use pda.net with verizon? I believe the answer is NO but i want to make sure.

Finally, is anyone using pda.net with vista & the i730 successfully?

thx for your help.

PDANet works with any version of the i730 Radio stack, whether you downgrade your radio or not.

mrailing:

thx a ton for the clarification.

if i do not downgrade the radio would i lose any other features?

i'd be willing to pay the extra $15/month to vzw for tethering, however, i may wait a month or two to add that feature. I don't plan to use the tethering frequently.

i am going to add some info i picked up regarding the i730 and tethering with verizon.

hope this helps someone...

let me know if this works.

# re: Samsung i730 As Laptop Modem

Not sure how you managed to get this to work easily with Vista, but I had to fight quite a bit, and it never worked from the start until I got pretty deep into troubleshooting with it. So, for those of you who have also been unsuccessfull with setting up your i730 as a USB modem with Vista, I have your answer in the below post... FYI, this is for instructions on setting up your i730 with Windows Mobile 5, as a dial-up modem for your Vista computer...

# re: Samsung i730 As Laptop Modem

OK, I have searched long and far to get my i730 to dial out via USB on my Vista with no luck, so I managed to figure it out on my own, and felt compelled to share with everyone else that is or was in the same circumstance.

Here is a recap on basically all I ever found on the web to contribute to setting up my Samsung i730 as a USB modem: (Follow this to get started)

Instructions

1. Unhook the Samsung i730 from the USB connection and do not hook up the phone to the computer until prompted.

2. You have to download and install SCH-I730 MCCI driver (See #11 here in the FAQ) from samsung's web site before it will detect the drivers.

The file you DL from Samsungs web site (icon looks like an egg) will display a dialog box that has a bunch of buttons with question marks on them. Click the bottom left button. This extracts the installation files to a folder. Run setup.exe.

Download MCCI driver

3. Go to the phone app and then press: **PATH (**7284)

4. Select: As the modem through USB

5. NOW PLUG IN YOUR i730 using the usb cable. It shoud detect the modem driver now.

6. You now need to make a new Dial Up Networking connection using the following settings (if you do not know how to make a dial-up connection, please Google it. This is dependant on which Operating System you are using) :

Phone number to Dial: #777

Username entered: yourtendigitnumber@vzw3g.com

Password entered: vzw

Now, we can continue on making this project work with Vista. I am also using the new Mobile 5 OS on my i730, so Pocket PC 2003 users may see something different.

For starters, who ever released that driver with Samsung as available to U.S. customers should be shot. The confusing characters in the extraction program (likely created in a diff language) should not be a frustration for us from a huge manufacturer like Samsung. Also, I could not get all of the files to extract regardless of what machine/OS I ran it on, the extraction tool always missed around 5 or so files needed for the installer to work! I downloaded it from 3 different locations, so it looks to be another issue with that installer.

Moving on...One thing that was not clearly explained above, is that the i730's Data Connection must be changed to "As the modem through USB" before it is recognized by your system. I suppose the phone app deal may have done that for you, but I had to make the change manually on my phone by going to: Settings, System, and Data Connection.

After doing so, I set my phone back in its Sync Cradle, and was emmediately prompted by Vista to install the new modem device. This was quite simple, the drivers that actually managed to be extracted earlier worked perfectly. You must of course choose to install these manually during the wizard that begins. Simply point the driver wizard to the driver folder created by Samsungs crappy extractor, and let it install the drivers found.

- Modem Installation

After the drivers install correctly, we need to setup our dial-up connection. Go to the Network and Sharing Center in your Control Panel, and choose "Setup a Network or Connection" on the left. Choose "Set up a dial-up connection" and click next. Fill out the ISP information as described above and choose connect to save it. You will not yet be able to connect, after it fails just ignore and move on...

Making it to this point I figured I was home free finally getting the CDMA modem installed for my phone, however, I received hardware errors each time I attempted to connect. I had to run through an hour or so of troubleshooting, settings, etc. before I figured out the solution.

Vista installs the "Internet Protocol Version 6" (TCP/IPv6) by default and enables it. This will cause issues with our only driver currently available for i730's modem. You must disable this protocol before your phone will successfully connect.

- Disabling TCP/IPv6

Go to the Network and Sharing Center again in your Control Panel. Click on "Manage network connections" on the left. Right click your new dial-up connection, and choose properties. Click on the Networking tab at the top, and then uncheck the "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" option in the window pane. With this unchecked, click OK to save your settings and exit.

From there, you should be good to go! Just double click your dial-up connection to connect. Make sure your phone is cradled, or plugged in, and that the data mode is switched to "As modem through USB" each time you connect.

Please post responses if you have any further problems setting this up, and I always enjoy hearing from those who managed to get it working. Thanks!

Okay, just a quick update. (NOT the person who wrote the above.).

Quick & Dirty way to get the i730 to work as a modem on a Vista PC (laptop, in my case).

Connect the computer to the 'inet. Cable or WIFI is okay, but be connected.

Disconnect phone from crade. Go to Settings - System - Data Connection. Change to "As a Modem thru USB". Connect phone to cradle.

You will be told about new hardware. Let the computer connect to the net and install itself. Twice. Yes, twice. It installs 2 things.

Now, set up the dial-up with <10-digit-phone-number>@vzw3g.com, password vzw.

You're done. That's all there is, and it works well.

Ok, so I'm a little lost. My i730, I have is basically brand new, a few weeks old, sent from Verizon. I simply set it from hybrid to 1x and change the data option in settings to USB. With out doing anything else I can tether to my laptop and connect on the 1x network. However if I leave it at hybrid then I get "Username does not exist on this domain". So am I to understand that if I were to downgrade my radio that I could then tether to the EVDO network?

Has anyone been able to get the MCCI driver to install on Vista Enterprise 64 bit? If I run the setup, it looks like everything goes fine and asks for a reboot. Reboot and plug in the phone in USB Modem mode and Vista cannot install the drivers for the new hardware. Even if I let Vista connect to the web to find the drivers it fails. Very strange.

Most likely it won't work on Vista 64Bit, because of needing signed/validated drivers, and these aren't. I also highly doubt we will see a Vista driver. Your best bet might be to talk to June Fabrics, the creators of PDANet and see if they will have a Vista 64 Bit compatible version of their software. I think that has a great chance of happening over getting anything from Samsung.

I decided to upgrade to WM5 and am trying the radio stack but it's just not happening. I'm using XP SP2 with all the latest patched, Samsung drivers installed and Device Manager sees it as Com3: When I run the PST, I just get stuck at Download Start. I've tried other com ports and get a "request copy error" instead.

Is the update supposed to take forever, or should it be pretty fast after Download Start comes up?

This is a desktop application, it wont create a shortcut anywhere for you (If i remember right). I believe its under program files, samsung, pst something. I dont have it installed right now but look under program files for samsung or pst, and you should find it.

Can't downgrade radio.

Greetings eveyone!

On two different computers with vista once I reboot the phone to emergency mode pdalite can no longer communicate with the modem as it goes away in device manager. On my XP box pdalite gets the assertion errors others have talked about and I can't load the img file.

I rarely tethered as in modem for laptop but what I did do was dial (direct from pda) into my works RAS# and get corperate email with OMA and dial MSN dialup for internet.

I did these things with my i700 but when I got my i730 last thursday it already had the new FW and I was hosed.

Please confirm the new FW disables both applications one and the same. I also suppose a data block on my service on my account would not restore any of these functions for me.

Thanks for any suggestions you might have and efforts for those coming up with these solutions / workarounds.

Bill

Either do a soft reset (if you still have CDMACSP in the startup folder) or run CDMACSP where ever you backed it up when you removed it from the startup folder.

This will rebuild the dialup settings. If that doesn't work, do a *228 option 2 and soft reset when finished. If none of those work, you might read through these threads and see if one of these is your issue:

Can someone point me to the right place for this?

You need to follow the emergency procedures for WM5 and using the Verizon app to completely restore WM5 to your device. Those procedures are listed in the FAQ or on the dts.vzw.com page."

The same thing happened to me and I have tried to reinstall the WM5 image from the Verizon site and no dice. I can't find this info, so can I get a direct link to the thread in the FAQ or on the dts page?

Thanks.
