Well, I guess us i830 users are left in the dark with all the i730 WM5 official release excitement. If anyone hears anything about the relese for the i830 please post it here. (I had to do a hard reset today just to feel *cool*).
I have been asking about it, and when the official release is "officially" released, then they said probably around 2-3 weeks to push out the i830 release.
Also I would be they would have the i830 WM5 release out before Sprint starts using it on their network, which is suppose to happen by the middle of June.

Yes, recent speculation (cited in the Rumblings thread several days ago) suggests Sprint's June release of the i830/WM5.
Still, Sprint internal sources maintain the i830 is scheduled for...August.
And doesn't it seem unlikely VZW would let Sprint rain on its SCH-iX30 parade before exploiting WM5 bragging rights with these devices?
Next, Sprint has its hands full with the exclusive Treo 700P (Palm O/S, EVDO support) rollout. It appears stretched awfully thin to cover the i830 in this cycle.
And hey, if VZW's i730 WM5 *isn't public* as of 05/20/06, it's hard to make the case for Sprint's debut of i830/WM5 in a few short weeks. How could Sprint support be in place when VZW's desperately seeking magic from *PDAPhH* to debug this thing?!
Finally, if Sprint's i830 were imminent, we'd hear the patter of little feet: cameo appearances of FUTs, discreet tech support inquires, etc. Nada.
In the meantime, as MR reiterates, the i830 WM5 clock will start only upon the public release of i730 WM5. Hopefully, life begins this week...
i am suprised that no one is going to try or has tried using SD's "versionid.txt" trick on an i830 to try to load WM5. I would assume that if was possible that you would lose the GSM functionality and then the wifi part of the i730 rom could screw things up pretty badly and the world clock part would be gone too (not sure of the other major differences). im sure it just would wouldnt work and totally nor possible but hey, it was just a crazy thought I had this morning...
any i830 peeps gonna risk a brick?
like i said, crazy thought - dont flame me!

I did try this. It was funny seeing an i830 with "i730" under the version screen. The update would start, reboot the phone and then error out "device has greater or equal to version"
Sprint with an i830 makes me want to switch back, their out sourced support is horrible, but prices are so much better.

But what do I know?

Sprint and Verizon will be getting the 700p at the same time, there is no exclusivity for this phone.
mrailing said the i830 update is supposed to be "soon after" the 730 update. So I would expect it "soon"

While Sprint may or may not have a contractual exclusivity window for the Treo 700P, it's likely to have the device exclusively for some number of weeks. How soon after Sprint launches the 700p VZW rolls it out is anyone's guess.
My point is simply that, for a variety of reasons, Sprint will not be launching the i830/WM5 before VZW's public announcement of both the i730 and i830 WM5 products.
So what I'm curious about is if we'll be able to tether after the WM5 update. Since VZW seems to be disabling tethering in the radio update, and we don't have a previous radio update to "revert" to, will we be screwed?
Maybe, Maybe not. You might be able to do something with the PST software once it comes in, or someone might be able to modify the firmware file to not do the radio portion.
Also you could just use pdanet's software as a dun connection, like some people are with other devices.
So I think you will have options.

Yes, PDANet is an option, but if I can't get VPN to work, it's much less useful.
Sprint is sounding much more enticing when they come out with the i830. I might just eat the early termination fee from VZW.
I'd probably save the money in 6 months anyway.
I still have a sprint account and I'm thinking the exact same thing. I wonder if there would be a way I can just use my phone I already have on their network.
More news from Computex 2006 in Taipei. This time, we hear from graphics giant NVIDIA corporation, but they're not chatting us up about the latest graphics card, instead the company has announced the availability of a Windows Mobile 5.0 platform designed to optimize the user's multimedia experience.
Already found in such devices as the Samsung i830 smartphone, Modeo DVB-H smartphone, and iRiver G10 portable gaming machine, the NVIDIA MobileMedia Platform allows "manufacturers to rapidly design and release digital, media-rich devices with Windows Mobile 5.0."
Think of it as a device maker in a box, it seems, because this development kit contains "all the hardware and software components." They’re calling it “a complete solution for device manufacturers: Just piece it together like Lego.
Cell phone makers can speed up the development process and get the juicy hot handsets onto the market faster, complete with "smooth Digital TV and video", "incredible 3D graphics for gaming", and "high fidelity audio."
My Verizon contact said originally it would be at least a few weeks between the i730 release to the i830 release. They wanted to make sure it went smooth for everyone first, and let the support calls decrease on the i730, then they would release the i830.
I called again today, and he said "soon", and again repeated what I just said above...

I talked to my rep last week who called the data support person for our area. She said there is a problem with GSM and not to expect the update anytime soon. I hope she was wrong.
