You can make out where it says "Windows Mobile 5.0" on the Sprint TV on the top photo, as well on the last photo you can see the WM5 Menus at the bottom of the handset display. (Although very blurry). As well you can make out the Sprint logo on the handset. I know the photoshop is of "ROFL" so who knows how photoshop'd this is.
Had seen that thread early on. Don't think those photos were 'shopped because WM5 has indeed been demonstrated on i830s.
Here's a theory: The delay may relate to issues with WM5's dual-mode support (i.e., GSM). This seems likely because Motorola, HTC and Nextel struggled with similar delays when the iDEN i930 (WM03SE Smartphone) was in development. Apparently, Microsoft was a slow and difficult partner. In fairness, though, that phone's WM firmware had to support another one-off mod: Nextel's Direct Connect (PTT). Still, the device took more than 2-1/2 years to finish and was obsolete by the time of its release (10/05).
Believe the i830 is only the second-ever dual-mode WM device and will represent the sole WM5 dual-mode handset (assuming the O/S actually appears).
As to Sprint's likelihood of running with the ball...slim to none. Alas, Gary Forsee is an RBOC guy, not a warrior.
Sprint has very good tech. If it had imagination, it could eat VZW's lunch. Without it, it may become road kill for Vodafone.
Thanks for the reply. I def. agree with your theory as the dual phone radio modes as being the root cause of a delay in the WM5 release. However we've seen here on this forum that a bunch of i730s have upgraded WM5 PDAs but their radio version remained the same as it was when the device had WM2003SE. Do you think our delay could be because VZW wants to build in the tethering feature on both GSM/CDMA? And that could be the root cause? I wonder if Sprint would have such a problem considering they don't hassle their customers as much.
Well it turns out WM5 is capable of running on this device with it's dual mode radio abilities. The only remaining question now is if VZW releases to stay current with Sprint's release of this device.
So now that the Sprint version has been released w/WM5, when is VZW going to get off their a** and release it for their version of the i830?
They may never.
A somewhat plausable hope would now be this:
a) obtain a ROM dump of the ip-830W
b) obtain the i830 DLL for Samsung PSTLite
upload the WM5 ROM to the VZW i830.. I'm not sure how Sprint's "on demand" features would affect the device being on VZW, although I'm sure some tweaking and all that "excess" could be removed.
I just talked to tech support and he said that the upgrade was available from the my account page at verizonwireless.com but of course I didn't find it. It would be nice if the tech guys were all on the same page. Is anyone working on making an upgrade from sprints version?
I don't have VZW as a carrier anymore, but out of habit I still check the dts.vzw.com page on a daily basis, what a bummer really - the i830 is a nice device.
Anyone have any luck with this?
I purchased this phone in October, and was told that Windows Mobile 5.0 would be released in a few weeks for the phone. I'm trying to find the email that I got from Customer Service (Verzion doesn't respond to emails anymore if you mention upgrading the OS).
Does anyone know if the recent Supreme Court ruling on cellphone software affects this problem? In theory we should be able to put anything we want on the phone.
My phone is insured, so if someone has an "experimental" procedure, I'm willing to risk it. I researched the hell out of this purchase before I made it, and being able to upgrade was a major reason I purchased this phone.
Any help would really be appreciated.
