I called my contact at Verizon, who is now under a different division, and he said "I don't know, last time I heard they were still planning a release close to when Sprint was going to push out the i830, but I haven't been in the loop in weeks." The "promoted" him to a different area and he now longer works with phones.
I tried, and he said he would check and see if he can report anything back.

thanks for checking mrailing! i will be setting up another i830 this morning for another client. both of them just drool over wm5 on my i730! i cant wait for this upgrade so i wont get so many phone calls about issues with wm2003se!
There is no new news. It is a hot topic over there but they don't even seem close. Don't have anymore info then that. I guess at least they are talking about it.
Tringery or Mrailing would you be able to ask your respective "ethan" about possiblly leaking the i830 dll for PST lite?
It's not a matter of the dll, it's the build in question. Just because we got the correct dll, we still had the ROM dump of the i730, which is why they both worked. So even with the DLL, you still wouldn't have the correct ROM dump to do it.
The i830 is "similar" the the i730, but there are some major differences between the two, both hardware and available software. This was coming directly from my buddy.
You will have to wait for the update to be released, or we would have to get a hold of a ROM dump, have someone "tweak it" into an image file, and then have the correct DLL. As far as my buddy knows, this isn't even in FUT, and it might not ever be before it's released.

I still think they are negotiating the rights for it. I don't even think it is in testing or in existence or someone would know and right now everyone we ask says the same thing which is much different then the responses we received for the i730 previous to the Friendly User Testing release.
It's pretty unlikely that licensing issues account for the i830/WM5 delay. This phase should have been completed months ago.
All signs point to technical matters, and this seems to be reflected in Sprint's failure to release the i830 by now. With only the PPC-6700 in its MSFT PPC fleet, Sprint simply can't afford to roll out a sub-WM5 device.
BB Connect on the i830 is not a rumor... This is absolutely true. I don't know when they will actually release it though - supposedly early Q4 is what I heard, but take that with a grain of salt.
Unfortunately for those who have been waiting for WM5 on the i830, I have it on STRONG authority that VzW has no plans at this time to release WM5 for the i830. I can't disclose my sources for this, and don't want to get into a pissing contest on who here has more of an inside scoop with VzW... So take this for what it's worth, believe it or not, I'm indifferent.
Anyway there's my two cents about the i830.
I wonder how this would affect Sprint's release of the i830, Another side not that I thought about the i830 for sprint:
Vodafone used to be part owner in some of the Bells. I believe that is the basis of the VZW/Vodafone roaming relationship, I wonder if Sprint would find another carrier or just leave it 100% open in Europe?

Vodafone owns 45% of Verizon Wireless (Verizon Communications owns the other 55%), that the basis for the VZW/Vodafone roaming relationship.
Believe Merrill Lynch speculated last week that Vodafone might unload its minority interest in VZW after all (VZ wants it)--and redeploy the proceeds to buy...Sprint.
If so, Sprint's i830 could end up locked to Vodafone, lol.
Just got off the phone with Verizon and their technical department states the i830 is not getting the WM5 update.
What a shame, this would make the phone the best on the market.
If true, VZW's defense for not producing WM5 for the i830 would be this: low volume.
'Course, one of the primary reasons for limited sales is zero marketing--actually, anti-marketing is more like it. Since its release in January, this device has been virtually hidden from view and sold only by special request. Baffling.
Still, hard to believe Sprint would be content with WM03SE for this product. It only has two WM5 devices, Apache and Treo, and needs depth in its fleet. If Sprint gets WM5 deployed on the i830, VZW should rise to the occasion. We'll see...
If it's true. I have a slightly used i830 to get rid of. are there any better phones. The gsm phones seem so much better. Thinking of moving to Cngulr. How sure are we about wm5 on the i830?

I'm in the same boat as you. I would def. switch carriers if my i830 didn't get WM5.
VZW may be on the hook for WM5 due to commitments it's made to major accounts.
Still, Cing doesn't seem to have much HSDPA coverage at this time--and certainly has no comparable device. What would be gained by moving to ths carrier?
--BAM
EDIT:
On second thought, this isn't entirely true. Cing has (sold elsewhere) the Sony Vaio UX180P, a more powerful device. It has, however, four limitations: it's larger, doesn't yet support HSDPA (fatal if not addressed with a radio module upgrade), is not a phone, and costs $1,800.

I very sincerely hope this is not the ultimate outcome. I very much liked my i730 and was looking forward to the WM5 upgrade; needed SP2 upgrade on my computer first. I have since switched jobs and have moved to the i830 for international capabilities with the same hopes of WM5 upgrade. However, moving to the i830 I have lost the wifi capability which is highly disapointing by itself. The possibly of loosing the hope of WM5 seems heart wrenching. I am still hoping for WM5 and some way of wifi on the i830 in the future.
I certainly hope VZW doesn't leave this one die on the vine.
Yeah the speed of the i730/i830 is hard to compete with. I've said it before and I'll say it again. I'm happy with WM2003SE, the only thing I really want is A2DP.
