PhoneHelper v2.0

Hi,
i've made some necessary modifications to PhoneHelper and re-compiled to run under WM2005 and against Compact Framework 2.0.

File: PhoneHelper v2.0
Location: http://www.xvariable.net/ws/xvar_mai...oads/repo.aspx

Supporting Files: CompactFramework 2.0
If you do not have CompactFramework 2.0 installed, you will also need that. I've included it on the page above under ".NET 2.0 CF Redistributable". However you should check microsoft periodically, as they will be releasing some Service Packs for this (SP1 beta is already available : http://blogs.msdn.com/netcfteam/arch...21/580901.aspx )
I am not sure if this can be installed in safestore, but i would recommend against it, since it cotains some core libraries and runtime files.

Installation
-Download the cab file and copy to you device.
-Install in either Main or safestore. The app will install under /program files/phonehelper
-create a short cut to phonehelper.exe and copy this to /windows/startup (for some reason i could not get this short cut to be created when generating the cab, so this is the only manual step you'll need to perform)

Description of changes:

NumLocker:
-Unfortunately, for some reason i've yet to figure out, the FN key seems to not want to behave under WM2005. So i am now using the "?" key for NumLock
-This should work as before, except i have added the "-" (G key) as one of the characters that is available when NumLock is on. This is because i find that i have been using num lock most often when entering phone numbers.

Dialogue Killer:
-Well, it looks like WM2005 brought some good design changes here. MOST dialogues can be dissmed via some one hand operation. BUT, some require you to traverse to a "hide" or "close" button.
-So i've modified dialogue Killer to use the "Return/Escape" key (the little hardware key at the bottom of th phone with an arrow icon drawn like a backwards "C") to immediately dismiss dialogues. This means that if you want to quickly close those dialogues without have to move to a hide or close button, you can. Additionally, for those dialogues that still do not offer a way to dismiss without using the stylus, Dialouge killer should take care of them.

MuteHelper->DialerHelper
-MuteHelper is now renamed to DialerHelper (yea, i suck at coming up with names)
-When phone dial pad is shown, the right DPAD key will bring up Call History.
-When phone dial pad is shown, the left DPAD key will bring up Speed Dial.
-When in a call and phone dial pad is shown, the center DPAD key will mute/unmute the phone
-Up dpad key will brin up the contacts list, but filtered by your last search
-Down dpad will bring up the contact summary dialogue of the current contact shown on the phone.
-

PIE Helper
-BACK button is now the calendar button (or what used to be the calendar button)
-FORWARD button is now the contacts button.

Key Swapper
-Replaces the '~' key with '$'
-You can also configure whatever key you want to be replaced using PHSettings.exe, however, i've only tested with the '~' and '%' keys, since those were explicitly asked for..

PHSettings
-Can still be used to stop PhoneHelper (since it runs as an invisible process) and allows some configuration of some the helpers listed above.

If there are other usabilty funtions you are looking for, let me know and i'll see if i can add them...as time permits

FINALLY, let me know if any of these "Helpers" are no longer necessary. I'd love to know if WM2005 resolves some of the issues that this was initially created to address.

Known Issues
-On startup, "PhoneSettings" will appear in taskbar. Work Around is to click the Return/Escape hardware key.

Change Log
V2.01
-Fixed issue with missing numlock icon

V2.02
-Added Keyswapper
-fixed a few bugs related to numlocker

v2.03
-Prevent WM2005 from closing process. Only PHSettings or process killers are allowed to terminate process.

v2.04
-fixes startup issue where "PhoneHelper" shows in top task bar on the Today screen after a soft reset
-Numlock key is now "?". This feels more natural on the right hand side of the key board and is safer than using the shift key, which is heavily overloaded in this device. The one small side effect is you might see the first "?" show for less than a second on the first press.
-PIE Helper now uses the Calendar and Contacts key as the Back and Forward browse keys.

v2.05
-fixed problem where Phone Dialer Helper mute's function was not working if headsets were being used
-added DPad up + down functionality for Phone Dialer Helper.

I am curious why you needed to move to the .net CF 2.0? I have worked with a few other designers that initially did it in CF 2, but then got the work done to load to work on 1, so we didn't have to load it. Is there something new that MS did to require this to CF 2, or is that just what you are developing in?

it wasn't absolutely necessary...but CF2.0 does offer some richer libraries. Some of the solutions in CF 1.0 were quite cumbersome to implement and required more code and "kludges" than i thought should be necessary. The CF2.0 is a bit more richer and exposes some apis that make certain features more accessible to developers.

that said, i have found some bugs in it already that i've submitted to microsoft...but that is to be expected i suppose.

I suppose part of it is also me trying to get up to speed on the latest and "greatest". the only way to do that is to work with it, so i tend to prever to work on what is new...

Hey Dimension,
THANK YOU!! This is awsome. It works great!! Just one question/problem? When it boots up(after soft reset), it doesn't automatically minimize to the background. It shows Phonehelper on the title bar, with an OK all the way to the right, and no Soft Keys showing. If I click on OK, it turns Phonehelper off. If I tap on a random part of the screen or load some other program, it minimizes and everything is fine. Any ideas why?

Are you suggesting using the 2.1 beta of CF, or 2.0?

Thanks! Great stuff.

I have one request that I'm sure a lot of corporate users have... is there a way to replace/modify the numeric password app so that numlock is on by default on that screen?

phonehelper will make it easier and I thank you for that, but I'd really like to just type my 4 digit password on the keyboard without hitting shift first, or even worse, FN num FN num FN num FN num like I've been doing every time I use the PDA... (1 hr timeout)

Also, is there a way with this program that with numlock on you can make the A/% key do a $ instead? (next to the 4 makes the most sense I think) I can't stand that there is no $ sign on the hw keyboard, then i get out the soft keyboard and it's always coming back on me :o

Good idea, although my preference would be to replace the "~" above the letter I with a "$"
rather than the "%".

That would be my request as well. Any way to use the keyboard to get a $ sign would be appreciated.

Actually, I personally would not like the ~ key. I use it more than once a day.

By default the i730 keyboard has multiple characters assigned to some of the keys, so that if you press the FN key again after typing the special character and then press the space bar key, it changes to one of the sub characters. Any chance to possibly add the $ to another character on the keyboard as an additional sub letter. Maybe to the % key as well. So that when you press the % key and modify it with the space bar, it will rotate to % to ^ to $ (currently it rotates between % and ^).

That would be the ideal situation.

thanks for making this app for wm5

but i think it has a problem with how it starts up.
I get a prompt on the upper right for phone helper on soft reset. If i click OK, it closes the program and it stops running. If i click lets say the phone pad, and then close out to the main screen.. then it stays running. guess i'll have to do this for now on unless you can fix how it starts.

thanks again anyways, it's a minor inconvienence compared to what it will let me do again.

Issue with typing rate

there is a problem with the key rate- words with double letters such as "letter", "moon" "yell" etc. appear as leTer, mOn, yeL, etc. when the double letters are typed quickly on the keyboard. is there a fix in the phsettings or dL (sE?) for this?

Hmmm...i'll look into this. For now, you can click the hardware Return/Escape key on startup. It shoudl get rid of it without you having to click on the screen.

I am currently on 2.0, if that matters any, but you can use either. If you run into issues, it's not difficult to revert to 2.0 i believe.

This would not be possible with this app. That password screen is shown before any of the apps in your startup folder are loaded. To do what you are talking about, i think we would have to identify what dll is responsible for that screen, and attempt to hack it there or replace the dll all together.

I've added a quick and dirty "helper" called KeySwapper and have tested it with both the '~' and '%' key. It's in version v2.02.

it defaults to outputing a $ when you press the '~' key, however you can change to '%' or some other key using PHSettings. Remember to STOP ans re-start PhoneHelper if you make any changes with PHSettings though.
Also, i have not tested this extensively with other keys, just the '~' and '%' keys.
