This is totally dependant upon the type of VPN server your office has. You need to check with your IT person and see what type of equipment you are trying to connect to, and then determine if the default Microsoft client will connect or if you need additional software. You will also need to find out the public IP address of the VPN system.
Some VPN systems won't allow you to connect without their VPN software, so keep that in mind. Start there and then come back with the type of equipment you are trying to connect to and the type of VPN connection authenication they have.

I've got a SonicWall VPN and I am the IT person here. It will allow me to connect using the Windows Mobile VPN dialer, but how do I set that up on my Pocket PC. I believe I've setup the VPN info needed on the PPC, but how do I dial to the VPN when I'm connected through WiFi?

Lenivan,
I use sonicwall's at all client sites I support. I do not know of any firmware version with sonicwall that allows the default windows vpn client. That being said, there is a sonicwall global vpn client for the Pocket PC. It does not work on the I730 WM2003SE edition. And, sonicwall does not have a WM5 client available yet.
I have gotten the NCP Client to work with WM5 on the I730, but it took some work. Feel free to PM me if you want assitance. The NCP instuctions are no where near accurate for the sonicwall.
Steve

SonicWall sent me this link. It is for a Linux VPN Server with Mobile 5, but they claim it has worked for their VPNs as well along with Windows Mobile 5.

I'm in a slightly similar boat in that I am also trying to get the NCP VPN client (which is extremely feature-rich) to connect to my work VPN, which is a Cisco 3000 series. It uses x509 certifictes, which I have gotten compiled in to a .p12 certificate format using OpenSSL. have actually gotten the NCP client to handschake and to report connected to the VPN server, but no traffic passes through the tunnel and eventually it just times out. Semills, I notice in your screenshot I have all the icons you do with one exception - I have an extra one on the far right that looks like a firewall with a green arrow through it, which I take to mean that there is a tunnelling firewall in place. I've actually told the NCP client config not to enable the firewall - I'll deal with that once I get it working.
I think the problem might be in the IP address configuration. The NCP configuration tool seems to have only three options - IKE Config, Use Local IP, and Manual. When I set it to IKE Config, the VPN doesn't connect. When I set it to Use Local, it connects, but my IP is reported as a 192.168.X.X address and that's when traffic doesn't pass through the tunnel.
So I have two questions one for semills and any others who have gotten this client working, and the other for the group. First, based on my symptoms any ideas what may be causing my lack of connectivity through the tunnel? Second for the group, anyone know of a tool to let me run netstat on this friggin' thing? I am running SD WM5 so I know some tools are available but not on that platform. I just need to do general network debugging. Ideas?
I'm not sure what exactly to make of this, but I have discovered that the only way to get the connection working is to select 'Use local IP' in the NCP VPN Client settings. Then there is an .exe in the NCP program files directory called 'ncpconfig', which has an option to 'support WAN interfaces'. I can only connect if this is checked. However, every time I connect I get the IP address 192.168.254.2, which is not valid for my VPN network. I assume it is a loopback address for the client, but when I use vxUtil to list ipconfig settings on all my adapters, this address is nowhere to be seen and the NCP Loopback adapter reports no IP address. Frustrating! So I think this is not an issue with my VPN server - this is on the client. Anyone else seen this?
I appreciate the info, but for someone as stupid as me... could someone please post step by step instructions on how to set this up? Thanks in advance.
This is where the problem runs in. You really can't get a step-by-step instructions for VPN setup, as it totally depends on the way your VPN server is setup, and which security protocols are in use.
You need to get a good understanding on how VPN's work, and which information you need from the VPN server (protocols, IP address, usernames/passwords, etc.). VPN software is not my speciality, but I have setup a few of them, and many of them can be very tricky and finiky.
So if you want help, please list the type of VPN connection you are using, and the protocols in place. Don't list any IP addresses, usernames, passwords, etc. With this information we can provide the help we can to try and get it up and running.
There are MANY different forums devoted to nothing but VPN and networking issues, with many more people that are experts in those areas, but we will do what we can to help you out here, or get you pointed in the correct direction.

My issue is more in hoping to find someone who had configured the NCP VPN client on the i730. I'm very familiar with the process of setting up a VPN on desktop machines, but this client is behaving oddly and I am wondering if I am missing a configuration setting or something. My configuration is a Cisco 300 VPN Concentrator - we use x509v3 certificates. I seem to have established my connection okay but no traffic ever goes through the tunnel,. this is why I am wondering if it's not a problem or incompatability with the NCP client.
