I know this has been discussed here. I tried the search feature and came up empty.
Can anyone tell me how to disable the data feature on the i730?
I went to the Verizon store and the guy said that it cannot be done. I call BS!
If your like me and dont want to use data connections beacause your too poor or too cheap to pay for them you might appreciate this. If you wish to remove expressnet and quick2net from your dialup list in WM5 simply click and hold them and choose delete. If you soft reset you will find they return everytime. If you do not want them to return simple browse to /windows/startup and remove or move the shortcut called CDMACSP. Now after soft resets you wont have the connections return.
Hope this helps someone else besides me.
Thanks
Andrew
I have tried searching "disable #777," "disable data," "disable 777," etc...
Is this simply a matter of going into the cennections settings and changing the number to something other than #777?
This will keep till I do a soft reset, correct? I need the registry hack so I only have to do this once. I will never use the data feature because I have the "Pay-as-you-go" plan.
Please help or post the thread with the instructions.
Well you quoted me, did you try it? Delete CDMACSP from yoru /window/startup folder. Then go into settings, connections and delete the #777 connection. This works great for me under WM5 on the i730. This deletes the dial out number and deleting CDMACSP from startup will prevent it from returning. I've never been charged for data.
If your on windows mobile 2003se youll be able to just change #777 to something else and it should stick across resets.

Not yet, no...
I would rather do a registry hack to be sure it is permanent.
Thanks for the help. I guess I am making this harder than it really is... I just don't want to get a huge bill because my phone was unknowingly going out to the internet.
tange1 gave you a perfect set of instructions on how to disable the data, or you can call Verizon and have them put a data block on the phone. If you could POSSIBLY want to use data when in a pinch, don't call Verizon, and just do the instructions that tange1 gave you, they work, he wouldn't lead you down the wrong path...

Oh, I believed him, I just thought it would be more difficult than that after listening to the Verizon sales guy.
Nope, pretty easy to do, and prevents the accidental data connection...

Of course verizon is not going to tell you its simple to disable data. 1 - It's in there best interest to get you to do data and collect on it. 2 - They dont know the little details of the phone; only whats in the manual's.

I did this but when i went into the manage existing connections menu to delete the #777 it deleted two things at once. I am not exactly sure what the other one was but it origal had three things listed and now the only one is Quick 2 NET. Is this a problem? If so what do I do?
Also it appears as though my wifi does not show in the wireless window with bluetooth and phone.
When you delete one of the of the Data Network connections, it will delete the "Auto Pick" Option automatically, because there is only one connection left when you delete one.
Data Network is 1RxTT or EVDO data network and the Quick2Net is the older / slower 14.4K that uses your minutes. Neither effect wifi.
Thanks for the info.
Am I safe in assuming that if I am NOT using wifi, that the default will be the Data Network and that I would only use Quick2Net if EVDO is not available at my location?
If your using Data Network and EVDO isn't available, then you will most likely have 1RxTT available and use that. I you set AutoPick and neither EVDO or 1RxTT is available, then it would try Quick2Net.
remember that QUICK2NET only uses your regular phone minutes (not DATA minutes). So while connected it is like you are having a conversation. Just make sure to disconnect after you are done else you eat up talk time. I think there is a time out on QUICK2NET , but why waste your talk time.
I mention this because QUICK2NET will still work EVEN IF you have a data block on your phone. But it only burns your voice minutes (so it is free nights & weekends if you have free voice time then).
After deleting #7772 and setting up Quick2Net I see you can set your internet connecting default in Network Management to work off of "My ISP" or "My Work Network". If this setting is set to use Quick2Net (My ISP) or WiFi (My Work Network) what is the easiest way to switch between the two when WiFi is or is not available?
In other words if I have it set to use Quick2Net whenever I open IE to access the web and I happen to be somewhere that has WiFi is there an easy way to use the WiFi in order to not use my minutes and benefit from the faster connection without changing the above mentioned defaults? Thanks!
Since I wrote this I found that I can fire up the WiFI before opening IE or doing a send/receive in Outlook then they will use that connection and not dial into the data connection.
Im in the early stages of researching this topic, so I apologize if I am guilty of not searching enough. I was confused by a few threads.
I'll probably be getting the i760 within the next few days, but like many others, I do not want to pay Verizon their outrageous charge for a data plan.
Correct my summarization if I am wrong:
If I am planning on keeping my simple voice plan with pay-as-you-go data, then I need to do the following to prevent extra charges:
Delete CDMACSP from /windows/startup folder.
Go to Settings->Connections and delete the #777 connection.
Change MMS settings to NOT download automatically??
If I do all of these, then I should be able to use wifi at my own leisure without extra charges with just a voice plan?
I should still be able to send/receive standard text messages right?
What happens then with MMS message? If people send them to me, but I have the phone set to not download, I should be OK, right?
Thanks in advance for your help. Just like others, i was told at the Verizon store that I couldnt get this phone without a data plan. Then I was told that I could, but they couldnt put a data block on it. Now Im finding out they were both inaccurate.
