WM5 Setup Guide Questions and Support Thread

The Setup guide is moving forward and currently at 0.6 version. I will be working on the guide probably later in the week, but until then it's about 60 percent complete (thus the 0.6 version.). You can find it here:

http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69929It gets you up till setting up e-mail and installing software. If you have questions/comments/support for the SETUP GUIDE, then ask here (items other than Setup Guide questions/comments/support will be deleted).

This also includes the setup of the MRailing Phone Tools.cab.

Enjoy.

Don't use wordpad to open the file. In fact, don't ever open the file at all on the desktop - just change the extension to .cab and put it directly onto the SD card.

Furthermore, it would be a good idea to keep a copy (once you get it working) of the .cab file in SafeStore, just in case you ever need it.

So Click Start -> Setting -> System Tab -> Erase Memory.

Check both boxes, and when clicking each box, you will be prompted to type in 'YES' after clicking each one. Now if you look at the right softkey it says "Format", so hit the right softkey to format SafeStore First, and then on the reboot, it will Hard Reset your phone (otherwise known as Formatting Root...).

That's it, pretty easy....

If you want to Hard Reset because of a problem. Hold down the Menu Key and the Slider and while continueing to hold them down, press the Reset hole, and DON'T let go of the slider and Menu key until you see Formatting Root...
Am I misunderstanding that or are you giving instructions to format and hard reset for a WM5 phone? What about 2003? Which is the menu key?

Yes, those are instructions for doing a hard reset in WM5 through the OS.

The menu key is the top left button if you are looking at the phone. In WM2003 it is used to bring up the menu by default and in WM5 it is the left soft key by default.

Does this answer your question?

Michael,
I never installed your phone tools cab when I set up SDWM5. I have made MOST of the registry changes (maybe all??) and set up PIE Favorites, etc...
Can I still install the cab? Will it just overwrite the changes I already made? Will I lose all of MY PIE Favorites?? I have not backed up yet (I think I will buy Sprite Backup tonight anyway... ) Do I have anything to worry about if I install this now? Thanks!
Jeff

P.S. Thanks for your dedication to this site and to all of the i730 users out there. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate it. I hope more forum members are donating to you, SD, Dimension and others who contibute regularly.

It will only make the changes that the CAB is suppose to make. So it will change your start page, but it won't erase any of your favorites, it will add the ones I have programmed.

So it should be fine to make the changes, and if not, you can uninstall and it will go right back to the way you had it before.

Problem installing MRailing Phone Tools

Michael - I can't get your phone tool file to execute. I downloaded the .txt file and saved it on my desktop as a .cab file. Then I opened up Explore in ActiveSync and put the file in SafeStore, took it out of the cradle, found the file, and tapped it. It opened as a notepad document. I also downloaded it as a .txt file and renamed it to a .cab file after initially saving it on my desktop with the same result. What am I doing wrong? Thanks so much! Linda

You didn't change the file extension then. I would say you have your PC set to not see file extensions. From Windows Explorer on the PC, click Tools then go to Folder Options, then click the second tab called View, then uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types", then click Apply and OK.

I would bet you aren't getting the extension changed. You must change the extension on the desktop before placing the file on the phone, as the phone won't change the file type correctly.

You're right; thanks! I had thought that I had checked the option to be able to see the full file name, including extension, but I had failed to check the "show known file" extensions. It's been said many times here, but we can't say it enough - thanks for all you do for the folks on this forum.

What is the extension of the file in SafeStore when viewed in File Explorer?

Wm5 Mail Attachments

Sorry if this is the wrong thread to be posting this ? but I'm having a problem with mail attachments...when I choose "store on storage card" it ends up getting stored in SafeStore instead of the SD card. Is anyone else having this problem...if so please help.

i830w Out of the box

hello, i am due to receive an i830w from sprint today and wanted to ask - i know it's probably stupid - but will it make a difference if i don't load anything on it first and then hard reset? i was thinking i would just follow the steps for the WM5 setup u have outlined right out of the box before i do anything except maybe transfer the service over. would that be ok to do? excuse my ignorance here, but this is the first time i've come across s'thing helpful like this and i want to do it right. this will be my 3rd WM5 phone in the last 30 days or so, so i know about some of the issues u mentioned ur .cab will correct/help with.

Also, even though there isn't a camera (no big deal), I was wondering if there is still a way to send picture mail on this phone. I would still like to send to other picture phones instead of email if possible.

I really really really hate to ask, but when you update the setup guide, could you list all of the 39 registry changes and tweaks that the mrailing phone tools.Cab does.

Or, just tell me I won't be sorry with any of them if I just use the darn thing

Oh, I forgot to ask: I'm getting the message "unavailable #" on incoming calls with nobody there a few times a day now...never happened before. I've searched, but haven't found anything, but remember seeing something, any ideas?

thanks,
Michael

Yeah you can upgrade to WM5 out of the box before you activate... It doesn't really make any difference.

The registry entries are all mentioned in another thread where I did the testing of the file.
