I'm now getting these phantom voicemail indications ever since I installed PhoneAlarm 1.56.1 (on WM5). Calling voicemail, logging in, and then ending the call with "**" seems to make them go away, only to return again later. I have disabled PhoneAlarm and we'll see whether that makes the problem stop.

So far, so good: having removed PhoneAlarm 1.56.1 over 12 hours ago I have so far NOT had any more "phantom voicemail" notifications. Note that if this IS a problem that is attributable to PhoneAlarm, it never happened before I took the "upgrade" to 1.56.1. After another 24 hours or so of testing without PA, I may try intsalling one of the older versions (if I can find one) and try to determine whether that solves the problem.

I have never used PhoneAlarm and I get the phantom VM indicators. The sad thing is that I get to where I ignore the VM indicator and then find out a few days later that I actually have a VM. Oops.

I spoke too soon. Even without PA loaded into the Today screen, I get the phantom VM indicators. I'm going to have to call VZW...

I finally had awhile on my day off to play with this problem. Somewhere, somehow, I got the indicator stuck with one voicemail. I left myself multiple messages and tried everything, but for the last 4-5 days mine was stuck at 1, no matter how many I actually had from 0 to 3.
In the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\System\State\Messages\vmail\Line1\Unread\Count
Change the DWORD Data to 0. (mine was set at 1).
I know very little about registry settings, and this could possibly implode your phone should someone leave you a message, so use at your own risk. If anyone else with computer skills can actually verify what I did, please do.
I tried this same thing and it did not solve my problem. As it turns out, I had three entries under H_C_U\System\State\Messages\vmail: Line1, Line2 and Total. I changed Line1 to 0 as described above. Line2 had no data in it. But Total also had ..\Unread\Count=1, and I had to change it to zero as well.
So, in summary. Check all directories under vmail, and set them to zero using the procedure described above.
Have you read thru this thread?
Did it not help you?
Thanks for that nudge. Yes, I had read the thread, but I had forgotten to try the one suggestion that seems to have WORKED: I called my own phone from my phone and left myself a voicemail message. After I called back and retrieved and then deleted that message, the problem has not occurred again, and it has been several days.
Thanks,
Tim

It's certainly a phone specific issue. i have done the call yourself and leave a message on Phone #8 (or am i running #9 now, not sure). well, If i'm on 8. i have the phantom voicemail icon, I just don't check voicemail anymore. Problem Solved.
I really think conspiracy theory here. VZW is making us waste minutes calling to check for voicemails that don't exist.
come to think of it, I think i'm going to have VZW send me a new phone because of this. (back to the Phone specfic comment, Samsung know's it's an issue and cant figure out why.).
All of a sudden I am starting to get the Voicemail Icon when I have no voicemails .
I did a search (search term: Voicemail Icon) of the forum posts and can only find the most recent being November of 2006.
I am running WM5 (PDA and Phone upgraded). The only changes that I made to the phone recently are the Verizon Daylight Savings Time patch and Wireless Sync update. It actually seems to have started after the DST patch but I cannot swear to this.
I have tried all the suggestions (**, call myself, registry hack) and no luck.
VZW is sending me another (I'm sure not new) phone. I should get it today but what a pain it will be to redo all the registry hacks . At least Sprite Backup will help me get my programs back on real fast.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Rick

Have you tried doing a PRL update, and then leave yourself a message?

Need help setting up your i730/i830 or other WM2003/WM5 Phone, as well as the other hacks I have done, check out the MRailing Guides and Links
Yes... I actually did a *22899 (I was told the PRL and Roaming are updated at the same time). I have called myself several times and disconnected using ** (as suggested in one of the posts).
I have disabled Wireless Sync Push after changing the registry this morning. So far the icon has not come back, which is not unusual for it to disappear for a couple of hours after I change the registry.
Thanks in advance for all the help.

I got phantom VM indicator on this saturday. I uninstalled PA (1.60 Beta 4) and did the registry change under line 1 and has not retuned yet. However, when I reinstalled the PA (1.60 Beta 4), the PA showes 1 unread VM, but not in the bubble. I guess its not in the system now, but it is still somewhere in PA. Any guess how should I remove it from PA?
I've tried the phone call to myself and even did the phone exchange with VZ. I'm sure that it is something that I'm doing with the software that started the error, but I've been happy enough with using a registry editor to remove the entry.
What I wanted to add is that the "phantom idicator" only seems to be there when I don't check the voicemail for a few days or more. If I'm on top of checking the mail, it clears itself properly. Maybe that has something to do with charging the unit, syncing it to my computer, or changing the battery. I don't know. Of course, this highly reliable scientific experiment only went as far as something I've noticed happening. Hope it helps.
BTW - I don't post very often, but I spend a lot of time lurking around. Thanks again everybody who puts in their valuable time! I guess, thanks to those who put in their invaluable time too.
I also have the the phantom vm. I just installed MW5 a couple of days ago and its been there since. I have NO hacks other that Superdaves BTAUDIO Toggle that turns on the bluetooth for bluetooth head sets.
Is your VMRESET.EXE still working and please tell me, what is .Net CF 2.0?
UPDATE! - I also tried to leave my self vm then deleted it and it also failed, Then I did the *228 Opt 1, then soft reset. Then I left myself another VM but this time (and I dont know that it mattered) I whispered secret promises to my phone if it worked. I then went into VM and deleted the recording. And now its gone! I am not telling what it is me and my I730 will be doing later tonight under the covers

When I installed PA version 1.58 I got the phantom VM message whenever I did a soft reset. Finally, out of annoyance, I pressed and held the softkey and, whaddyaknow, the counter reset to "0". It's happened a couple of times since, but pressing and holding the softkey makes the counter reset to "0".
Maybe it's the way I touch it; but I don't think I can touch it like "wuzisname".
I did a simple MortScript to revert the registry back to 0 for the key. If you have not yet heard of MortScript, there is a thread here. The MortScript program is available here.
See attached for fix.
This fix worked great for me. I downloaded Mortscript to the same folder as your fix file (not sure if that's necessary to have them in same folder) then tapped on your fix file. The fix removed the phantom voicemail notification immediately. I have not had the problem since I did the fix 3 weeks ago. Thanks a lot.
i am living in northern virginia. I have had the phanom voicemail the last three days constantly. Very annoying. I am using callwave too, that is what is weird. By the way, I am curious how the phone is able to show the indicator when I am using callwave? I don't understand how the voicemail indicator can communicate with the callwave voicemail system.
Anyways, does anybody know a registry hack to completely disable the "missed call" and "voicemail" indicators entirely!?
I am going to try to change the registry value to -20 and see what happens. Lets all pray my phone survives this one
