I too have this and just now got time to look here. I have a new thing happening too ... my speaker/sound icon shows that I have the volume off (speaker symbol with an x in front of it) I have clicked on the icon andit shows sound levels at 80% ... that & the vm icon had me getting ready to bug phone alarm newsgroup ... I have adjusted my volume multiple ways today (start bar icon, phone alarm, up/down buttons) so I have yet to be able to point the finger at any given cause yet ...will let you all know
I finally had awhile on my day off to play with this problem. Somewhere, somehow, I got the indicator stuck with one voicemail. I left myself multiple messages and tried everything, but for the last 4-5 days mine was stuck at 1, no matter how many I actually had from 0 to 3.
In the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\System\State\Messages\vmail\Line1\Unread\Count
Change the DWORD Data to 0. (mine was set at 1).
I know very little about registry settings, and this could possibly implode your phone should someone leave you a message, so use at your own risk. If anyone else with computer skills can actually verify what I did, please do.
Yes Mark, it should be changed on the fly. If you all still get this, let me know and I will create a CAB file to do nothing but reset it to 0 and then you can keep it on the phone when you are having issues. I have no problems with VM notifications and haven't seen a stuck one yet.

I would love a little program to kill the voice mail notification. I had to just go in and to the registry trick. I think I hit 7 to erase message and hang up to fast .. or something
also sometimes I see who is calling a chose not to answer.. then I get a VM notification.. I want to cancel the notification without calling. In Phone alarm I just turn off the alert and I can see the number of voicemails I have. With the WM5 notifcation is takes over my lower left soft button until I check it, that is what annoys me most. Maybe there is a way to simply turn off the soft button notication.
Nope, can't turn it off, it's the notification button, it tells you everything the bubble used to, but now on a button and not hidden in a bubble...
I will get a VoiceMail Reset cab made when I get back home to my computer...

Thanks for the tip. I ran across this problem yesterday for the first time since upgrading to WM5. I remembered seeing (but not reading) this thread recently so I went back to it to find your solution. Following your suggestion of editing the registry worked like a charm.
Michael (Railing), if you're able to create a program that will clear the registry setting, that would be a HUGE help. Thanks!
Jay

Well then, scratch this file, and I will do it later when I get back to my home computer...

Just download this file, rename the extension to .CAB. Save the file in SafeStore on the phone and when needed, just run it, it should modify the registry key and do nothing else.
This "fix" reminds me of an old joke.
Man walks into a doctors office.
Man:"Hey doc, it hurts when I do that".
Doctor: "Then don't do that. That'll be $50.00 bucks".
LOL

I had it all weekend and it is finally gone... I think what I did was check all my new messages, go through all my saved messages and save them again, and then press what ever number the voice mail menu says to end the voice mail call. But than again I am unsure that was what cured it.
i never had this problem with wm2003se or with SD WM5.... until i did the Palm treo speed dial install.... so lately i just have to go into the registry and make the change from 1 to 0... sigh... all these little nuances with this phone lately has seriously made me reconsider getting a razr. i love this phone, but man, these little nuances are making it seem like 99% pda and 1% phone, and even that 1% is debateable.
