Let's keep this thread to nothing but the ACTUAL hacks and tweaks we find (and questions specific to those hacks and tweaks) for WM5. Any requests for hacks and tweaks, please put them in this thread:
Posts that fall outside of this, will be moved to the thread above without notice.

EDIT: Now this is funny. I did this like I used to in the Guide (Settings, System tab, about, device id) when I first booted WM5, and it didn't work, it changed from Railing_Mobile, to WM_mrailing. Now I changed it in the System area, and now it does. Seems that WM5, on the first sync, no matter if you change your Device ID or not (after a hard reset), changes the name on you. You can then change it back using the Device ID after your first sync. You don't need to use the Registry listing below.
------------------------------------
I don't like to have the "default" name in ActiveSync 4.1 (WM_mrailing). I would prefer something different. So there is no way to change it anywhere in ActiveSync or in any of the screens in WM5 like you could in WM2003.
So to change it you need to edit the registry.
The RegEdit file in the MRailing Tools Pack found in the setup guide still works, so feel free to load it. (Instructions for both loading and use can be found in the setup guide and still work).
Before you do this, sync one last time to get all information on the computer, and then undock the i730. Open ActiveSync 4.1 and click File and Delete Mobile Device. Do this till it won't let you any longer.
Navigate to:
\HKLM\Ident\
Find the key:
"Name"
And change the value to whatever you like. Make it something unique, not something you have used in the past. For example, I changed mine to "Railing_Mobile". Close Regedit, soft reset, re-sync and setup you sync options. Your name is now different and will continue to be different.
Before I ran in to a problem that everytime I synced it kept wanting me to change the name after it synced. Deleting all Partnerships took care of this.

Change the default Pocket IE Start Page - Verizon provides us with a nice little branded MSN/Verizon start page with quick links to some nifty mobile stuff. This is a nice page for newbs and advanced users alike as it has links to mobile friendly pages for weather, sports, hotmail, news, etc. I don't want it though, as I want my own start page, and by default Pocket IE doesn't let us change this by typing in a page, so again we do a registry change (you could navigate to the page and then click tools and then options and then click use current, but since we are "hacking" the registry, let's just do it during setup. Navigate to:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
You will see a large list of values in the bottom pane, find the one that says "start page" and click it to edit. Change the page to whatever value you want, keeping the entire address with the http in the front. Heck you could put the mobile version of pdaphonehome.com found at ****** (will be replaced when the link is released). Or if you want something simple, use the mobile Google search page at:

Change the location and limit the size of the Pocket IE Cache - Pocket IE by default is in Main Memory, which sucks if you browse the web as Main Memory gets eaten up by your temp files. Yes you can clean them out manually, or do a soft reset (reboot), but why not just change their location and size limit. Note that changing the size will also cause you to use more data as it won't keep as many files cached for browsing the web. Also cached files help make browsing sites a little faster as it can reuse the same images.
So first thing we do is change the location from Main Memory to SafeStore, so navigate to:
Find the value "cache" and change the value data to "\safestore\internet\cache" (without quotes)
Find the value "cookies" and change the value data to "\safestore\internet\cookies"
Find the value "history" and change the value data to "\safestore\internet\history"
Now each of the values will be in SafeStore instead of Main Memory. But wait there's more! We can also limit the amount of cache/temp files are stored.
you will see a value title "CacheLimit" with a whopping big value (I think 15 MB in size). We don't need that much so change the value to "3072" (without the qutoes). This will change the cache size to 3 MB in size, which will still let you cache enough images for a few websites, which should still make browsing fairly fast without using up much space.

SD ... I too was feeling the system was a little slow ... I have added your tweaks ... (why?) well cause you are you and if your gonna empty my bank and take my women I want to make sure you get them all ...
What do those hacks do ... I've already lemming'd but I'm questioning why we walked off the cliff?
mrailing, SD, you are awesome ! Thank to you Gentlemen (and I say that with great reverence!) my lovely toy has become the most stable device I've had.

I posted this in the to-do hacks thread but this seems like a better spot for it. Change default PIE D-pad scrolling from jumping from one link to the next to page up/down:
Navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Software\ Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ Navigation\4-Way Nav] and change its value from 1 to 0. You can still jump frum one link to the next with the tab button.

Hi SD, first want to say thanks for WM5, it's awesome (the reason I bought the phone actually back in Jan.).
I looked through this changes and I note some differences:
My limit is currently 8192 (not 16384) so I am wondering if you would still recommend I change to 32768.
My CacheSize is currently 0. Again, quite a change to 4096 and given the difference above from what you had, I just want to be sure I want to make these changes.
Thanks again SD, you're awesome.

Hmm, thats weird I never changed mine and it was at 16384. The changes will use more memory for both caches , but, in my opinion it is worth it. The system is much more responsive now.
Good enough for me. Only problem I'm having now is finding a registry key editor for it that will work. I tried PHM RegEdit... it didn't want to install. Now I'm trying Mobile Registry Editor. It lets me view the keys, but when i try to change them or delete them, I get an Access Denied...?

That worked. Changes made. Sorry about that, missed that part.
The one thing I noticed being slow was when a call came in, it took it a few moments to register the call and pop up the notification window. This appears to be much faster now... Thanks again SD and mrailing.
Has anyone else been able to re-skin the on-screen keyboard?
I tried using a keyboard skin from Buzzdev.net, but had NO luck.
It worked w/2003se with no problems... and it's supposed to work
with WM5.
I must be missing SOMETHING... Anyone?
