WM5 Rumblings (Part 2)

Well since I closed the other thread, and we are all on target with posting about the WM5 update and happens. It was requested that we still have a thread to talk about the upcoming "official" release of WM5.

So chat here, or rumble about it. Keep it clean, no flames and keep it TO THE TOPIC OF THE UPCOMING "OFFICIAL" WM5 RELEASE. Again once it's released I will open the stickied topic, but until then, consider this a rumor thread...

Original thread is here:

http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/showthread.php?t=65088

Also all the talk about the hacking of the ROM started with me at post #566, so if you want to see what was talked about before that, start there. Pretty much everything after #566 is about hacking the ROM, begging for it, and the lead up to the upgrade....

Yup, but then you will know what to do and can redo them. The Official release will do the same thing this one did, it will completely wipe the phone...

Same as previously mentioned, and what's in the Official thread, sometime Q1, most likely before the end of April.

WM5..Samsung Tech 2 releases some more info on the official release of WM5..

Hmm Im trying to consider what to do..get a yh25A upgrade that cant use SuperDave/Mrailings WM5 update, which Im seriously thinking about getting, OR waitfor the official release. I talked with a level 2 tech at Samsung and he said this past week they have already started shipping i730s with Windows Mobile 5 on them. He said we should be seeing it out already or in a couple of days..so have you guys seen or heard anything else lately? Interestingly hes had the official one on his 830 for a while now and noted some differences from what you see in the SDs beta version. He knows this from using the 730 with it on there and from having it on his own 830.

He said that his final version has a slider for allocating whatever levels of memory you want. He said his safestore is 86.39 mb, and that it puts more space towards storage. He said that the Wifi icon on the front isnt as big as the one on the beta version. He also said that the Wifi encryption is 130 so its less likely that people will be able to hack it if at all. He mentioned several other things that some people have mentioned as reasons why they don't want the beta version, but are corrected in the final release. He said the front screen is much better looking as well.

I have first hand experience with the actual PST update program at a well known store..(shh dont tell anyone), and it had an option for going from 2003 to WM5 so I wonder if anyone is able to flash the final version yet. The tech just didnt know exactly how to do that or yh25 for that matter..it couldnt find the phone when connected to the synch cable. Oh well..If I can be patient I think Im gunna wait for the final version i think..I cant afford to have a brick let alone have a potential brick incase I screw it up. Though it sounds tempting...

YH25 can be upgraded, I have that version and I am running SD WM5 just fine. Read the direction posted very carefully and you will see it CAN be installed.

The one I was looking at was YH25A not just YH25..I believe SD and Mrailings stated that you can update the yh25 but not other kinds. But Ill check the new WM5rumblings2 out..thank you.

Will those of us who bought our phones on ebay be able to get the update from Verizon? If it is not offered as a download from VZ or Samsung, will they do it in the store? I ask this because VZ tech support is basically useless w/ phones not bought directly from VZ.

In the past, no problem. Heck Verizon has replaced phones I have purchased on ebay. The i730 is the first phone I purchased from Verizon since my old trusty Motorola Startac (dual band, not even tri-band).

I don't think you will have a problem upgrading to WM5 officially.

If you read the sticky about the upgrade, you will see that both YH25 and YE05 are supported for the upgrade. It wasn't anything to do with the phone, but the way the software was looking at the boot loader, it didn't like version 1.8 compared to the YE05 1.7.

I have a YH25 phone, and it upgraded when we made the change, and when others did as well.

Also if that rep told you all of that information about his i830, he's full of crap. The i830 doesn't have WiFi, therefore he wouldn't see anything about WiFi on his homescreen.

As for the memory, I have the same figures as the person who sent their phone to Verizon, for the OFFICIAL upgrade. This is NOT a beta unit it came from, it came from a FINAL release of the phone...

Thanks, this forum has blown me away with all the great info. I found it on HoFo and I'm glad I did.

I'm not sure how familar anyone is with "Executive Relations" at Verizon. I have been dealing with them and that is how I got the 730. Anyway I have no idea what they are how high up they are but when I told the lady I was going to get the 730 she said good choice. I then asked her about if she knows when WM5.0 will be released for this she said no idea. She told me she has heard it is in the process but they are working on a new update first which they deem more important. She then told me don't be surprised if it isn't out in April.

Now this contradicts what a lot of people have been saying which is why I am asking if anyone in that dept would really know. Because I have no clue how high they are on the totem pole.
