My observation (Quick 2 Net):
My Y25 replacement phone came with "Quick 2 Net" internet connection already set up as a backup data connection in my connection settings.
Michael explained to me earlier that this was a slower connection that ran over the older Verizon data lines, and that it can be used is some places where 1x is not avail.
Anyway, I was in Arkansas yesterday, where Verizon has NO data service (1x or EV). And I fired up the Quick 2 Net connection.... VIOALA, DATA CONNECTION!!! hora hora, very exciting.
My friend is going to be in AR next week and I told him about this Q2N connection that he can use it to connect and get his email.
I helped him set his phone up, but he keeps getting the error "No modem found at that location".
I realized that he has the older rom verion Y05.
So it seems like Q2N only works on the newer Y25 version.
My request (WM5)
Now my question is if someone can try out this connection on their newly upgraded WM5 device to see if it works.
The settings are as follows:
- Create a new modem connection
- Modem should be "Cellular Line"
- Dial #7772
- Username: qnc
- Passwork: qnc
and that's it.
If someone can try this out it would be greatly appreciated, before I make the plundge to WM5... and just to see for everyone if this conection option was taken out of the WM5 rom by Verizon.
Thanks in advance.
IMPORTANT UPDATE:
Verizon advised that even if you have unlimited data plan, Q2N DOES use up minutes from your voice plan. I repeat... it DOES USE MINUTES FROM YOUR VOICE PLAN.
So, please use this cautiously.

Make sure you check your bill and make sure it didn't use your minutes to make the call. You might also check with Verizon to double check that too, and if the rep isn't for sure, ask to speak to the Wireless Data Support Team.
I have NOT used Q2N since getting on a phone without having the old MOU (minutes only used plan), and I want you to make sure your minutes don't get wipped out by using it.

Post an update on what you find, if it does infact use minutes I'd be thrilled as I dont have a data connection (cant afford it) but do have some excess minutes.

Keep in mind, Q2N is ONLY 14.4 kbps. That's half the speed of a 28.8 dialup modem...
Just to keep in mind....

I am on the phone now w/Verizon trying to get an answer re voice minutes.
They are saying that even if you have unlimited data plan, Q2N DOES use up minutes from your voice plan. I repeat... it DOES USE MINUTES FROM YOUR VOICE PLAN.
So, please use this causiously.
Might edit your first post and put that in there. I thought it did...

Q2N should still use your minutes, so if you want to use that without unlimited data, I would call VZW CS and double check, doesn't hurt to call in and get a name and rep #. If it charges you for data, you can then call in and get the charges reversed.

And tell them what? That I found Quick2Net on my WM5 i730? hehe...dont think i'd get much help. I thought Q2N didn't work on WM2003se so I dont think I could flat out ask but I'm sure a little social engineering could get an answer.

Tell them you have a Q2N option on your phone (it was on WM2003 with the YH25 firmware) and you want more information on what it does. You notice it's much slower than 1x, and when reviewing your bill it looks like it uses minutes instead of data. You want to see if this is correct?

I have spent the last 2 months debating with verizon over this very fact. I had $200 in data charges due to it (but they where dropped)
When pda phones log onto vzw data servers Q2N is not an option, it resorts back to 1X network which is what you will get billed for,
Hmm.. guess I'll be monitoring my bill very closely in the next couple of days. Some questions you guys may know.
- Am I correct to assume that the EVDO/1X "Data Network Connect" coverage is the #777 option and if you don't have a seperate data plan, it'll just refuse to connect?
The Quick2Net option is #7772 which and is currently believed to use just minutes of usage (MOU) off your voice plan?
- Mioduz said that Q2N may not be voice MOU and will get charged data rates. WHAT IF you used a standard dialup landline account instead of VZW Q2N service? Would this bypass their data servers so you won't get charged data? I tried this on my my VX1 & i600 for a while before I knew I had Q2N/1x access and got 14.4K data access via voice MOU.
- I'm assuming that there isn't a way to throttle the connection down and get a 1x data connection that uses voice MOU like I did with my VX1 and i600.
- Been getting mixed replies on this one. Is the cheapest way to get data via VZW is their unlimited VCAST 15/mo service? Hear some people have been able to get data access this way. And provided you don't go overboard and go crazy on data, generally this works to get EVDO access. No garantee you won't get flagged still but the consensus seems to be if you don't go overboard you'll be ok. Thoughts?
ill go into a lil more detail so everyone understands:
I do NOT have a data plan
I DO have a i730
I used to have a motorola, which i used in conjunction with bluetooth and my laptop to get online. I used the Q2N so it was just using my minutes. I assumed that i could use the same number and login etc as a connection on my pda. This way i didnt have to buy a data plan.
Verizon billed be as if i where using the 1X network, NOT the Q2N. I called and talked to a million people there and we finally got it figured out. Their data system is not able to accept PDA's to connect to the Q2N so it was billing me for killobytes on the 1X network. They did reverse those charges but from now on i can't go on without getting billed.
