What are the Advantages of Upgrading to WM5

im not worried about doing the upgrade, im sure that won't be too hard.

but why? what uses can i get out of WM5, that WM2003SE doesn't offer?

and i think this is right, once the WM2003SE img is gone and replaced with the WM5, it cannot be switched back to WM2003SE right?

ActiveSync is greatly enhanced, you can now sync between a mobile server, and another computer. So for example, I can now sync my corporate calendar with my personal home computer's Outlook calendar.

You can sync, media files via ActiveSync (real nice if you own a Media Center). In the past you had to have either MCE or Media Player open while the conversion and sync occured, now ActiveSync does it all.

Program installation is enhanced, now when extracting a cab file you can select where you want placed the install.

Phone is better, now you can go into your call history and add a call to your contacts. In addition you can add notes to calls.

Mobile Office - Better Word formatting support (tables), Excel (graphs), and now Mobile Powerpoint.

GPS port virtualization, you can have multiple GPS applications running all using the same GPS device (this is a guess, I haven't tested it out yet).

Better interface.

Longer battery life.

Interface improvements on contacts, calendar, and phone.

I'm sure there are more, and you can search the forums (not just the i730) about WM5 improvements.

This has been discussed:

AKU2 - Exchange push to the i730 (blackberry-like)

A2DP - Although it doesn't look like this version has it - Stereo Bluetooth

Better Battery life, cleaner OS. More customization options. More automation.

Most likely we could go back. SuperDave has a IMG file for YE05, so if someone MUST got back, we can probably get that done from THIS release. After doing the official release, it will up the Radio as well, which means you might not be able to go back to WM2003SE after you do the Official release unless someone hacks it.

Send a message via AIM to RCPerkinsJR

More Functional "One Hand" use with the Soft buttons and the context style of them

More Control over button assignment with multiple functions allowed on the buttons.

Interface improvement on Messaging, better functionality on Contacts (quick text message, call, etc with Photos embeded into your contact)

Photo Calling (if photo is linked in your contacts, the photo appears when a call comes in)

Yeah, ditto. I was waiting a day or two to make sure this thing wasn't going to brick me. Sounds like it's worth the time... guess I'll have to tackle it when I get back from lunch.

Does anybody have any initial reactions with respect to battery life? Much better? Marginally better? Somewhere in between?

I will NOT go for it at this time, because from what I have read:

* I am not a corporate user, so can't benefit from push email/exchange server improvements, etc.
* I am sceptical about a real improvement in batt life...can anyone explain why this is?
* I don't have time to be a beta tester (but would reconsider in a few months)
* I don't appreciate these disadvantages:
-- They apparently removed the ability to open a new note, contact, whatever from the Today screen
-- Program storage is reduced due to memory management system
-- Storage in flash memory is apparently not compressed, further reducing storage space
-- Stored programs are replicated in RAM to run them, so memory capacity is further reduced
-- There is RAM reserved for cache, and apparently if you reset or swap batteries too quickly (without turning off for 10 seconds), data in flash can be corrupted

I read some of this here: http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/5.0/...management.htm
so please don't flame me if it's not all true.

All that said, I think it's a cool project to flash the i730 with WM5, and I hope it all works out.

Also, I would dig using WM5 on a newer device someday, one with more memory, because:
* You won't lose data anymore if the battery dies (what ever happened to that backup batt that is supposed to be in these phones?)
* You can edit word files without screwing up the formatting (although I don't use pocket word in a collaborative way)
* You can show Powerpoint presentations (although there is software around for that)
* As discussed above, you can add a contact from the call history, and I think contact-oriented messaging is a big plus
* General one-handed use improvements use some "soft buttons" would be welcome: this is a big sore spot with the i730

For those sticking with WM2003SE, we still need a A2DP hack so we can have stereo Bluetooth, but that is for another thread:

the battery life at least seems significantly better for me. I've been using my phone pretty heavily today with the standard battery, and whereas I think it would've been almost dead before, phoneAlarm is calling 50% right now. but...it could be wishful thinking.

Today I did a lot of testing and playing. WiFi use, and normal "wear and tear". Since using the phone for the last couple of full days, I can say, it's around 20-30% better battery life with the slim battery. I still can drain it to 40% by the end of the day, but before I would have had to charge it. MUCH BETTER BATTERY LIFE...

We'll I use Wireless Sync with PC Monitor and that sends my emails the moment they arrive so that pretty much kills my battery. I can say that after one day, there is a noticable VERY noticable increase in battery life.

I like the photo's in the contacts app, its not necessary or even more productive, but it is fun.

HYPERLINKS to phone numbers and such in emails is a MAJOr improvement.

The voicemail and missed call notification bubble is much improved. However, for the life of me, I cannot figure out why M$ cannot put those notification right on the today sceen under the Outlook & Text Messages go so you could just look at the phone and see missed calls and voicemails immediately.

I, for one, like the battery indicator.

To date, the dislikes are:

When in an email, the context menu does not work, have to go back to the message list to delete messages. (EDIT: Not entirely correct as there is a "context" menu soft key while you are in a message, you can delete or reply or whatever from there. You do NOT have to go back to the message list)

PhoneAlarm cripples the speed of the phone. But with the new notification soft key and bubble, and the battery meter, you ALMOST don't need it.

I miss the date and time on the very top. I finally got around to the hack to put the date and time on top and removing the date from the today screen. Oh well, sure we can fix it soon.

What version of PA are you running? There is a beta of PA on their forum that I got when PA 1.3 was running very slow with WM5.0. It even has a setting for optimisation when using WM 5.0. For me at least its running faster now than it did before the SD upgrade.

The Beta 2 of 1.4 has run pretty well, but I am trying to deal without having it loaded for the time being. It's already been tough, I miss the profile changes, and the notifications. We will see...

But yes I don't think phoneAlarm has slowed the phone too much, I did notice some lag while loading the Today plugin, but after it's loaded it seems to work pretty well, and not bog down the phone.

I'm using the last final release. 1.3 I think. Havn't tried the beta yet, maybe I will, but like our fearless leader, Mrailing, I'm trying to go without it for a while. Kind of enjoying a streamlined today screen.

Also, I having a difficult enough time remembering what my long press buttons do. LOL!
