Has anyone else noticed that synchronization is A LOT slower when using AS 4.1 and WM5?
When I was using AS 3.9 and PPC2003SE, sychronization would fly. Even an initial sync would only take a couple of minutes. Both times I've done a complete synchronization (the first time being right after I upgraded to WM5 and second was after I hard reset my i730), it took close to an hour to perform the initial synchronization (roughly 3,000 contacts plus calendar, no tasks or notes or files).
Also, Michael Railing, I suggest that somewhere (in your FAQs re: WM5?) you let folks know that the synchronization options have changed significantly in AS 4.1 For example, AS 4.1 does not let you select which contact groups get sync'ed. Instead, it syncs all contacts (which is problem for folks who have more than 2,000 contacts because VoiceSignal does not behave nicely with more than 2,000 contacts). Similarly, AS 4.1 syncs all future calendar events and only lets you limit past calendar events to a minimum of 2 weeks. [If I'm offbase on my understanding of AS4.1's limitationsk, please let me know.]

I have my calendar items back 6 months on my phone, there is an option for that (in ActiveSync, click Tools, then Options, then select calendar and click the options button to the right, you can go back up to 6 months).
Yes it looks as thought they removed the specific Contact category options from ActiveSync. As a workaround, why not make ANOTHER contacts folder in your Outlook and move the contacts you don't want synced to the other contacts folder. You can still go in and setup the ability to use it as an address book, but you would then have the contacts not syncing to the phone. Just a thought as a possible workaround for your problem with the categories.

What I meant about the calendar was that AS 4.1 does not give the option to not sync any past events (sorry about that double negative). In other words, if I had my choice, I would prefer to sync only future appointments and not sync any past events. However, AS 4.1 doesn't give us that option.
With respect to the contacts issue, my workaround is to use Wireless Sync for contacts. Because I don't yet have an Exchange 2003 Server (we've got Exchange 2002), I'm stuck using Wireless Sync if I want to receive e-mails wirelessly (if I'm wrong on this, please let me know). Consequently, using WS for contacts isn't too big of a deal. However, I do wonder what I will do when I eventually switch to an Exchange 2003 Server and use AS for wireless syncing of emails (I would love to dump WS because it seems to be a resource hog).
If I used Outlook as my primary PIM, I would try your suggestion. However, I use a case management software called Amicus Attorney as my primary PIM. I use Outlook only as a conduit between Amicus and my i730. Amicus sends my contacts, calendar, and tasks to Outlook, which then sends it to the i730. Heck, to avoid potential conflicting data, I don't even sync both ways. Everything goes in one direction: Amicus-->Outlook-->i730. If I have any changes to make, I make them in Amicus. The nice thing is this way I never have to worry about anything I do in Outlook or on my i730 screwing up my data.
In any event, the point of my prior post was that I think folks should be aware of AS 4.1's limitations before they take the plunge and upgrade to WM5. Hope you find the suggestion helpful.

I misunderstood, sorry. I thought you wanted MORE previous appointments. I want 6 months back, as I reference old appointments quite often. I see what you are saying now.
Yes, there are MAJOR changes in the way Microsoft changed ActiveSync...

Although I understand that some of the changes were for the better, IMHO, others (such as the inability to sync only certain contact groups) are for the worse.

For some reason I am having an issue getting the sync to work. I installed 4.1 right after the upgrade. When I first connected my phone it hung -- I thought there was an issue with the existing Partnership, so I deleted it. I then tried again and nothing. I have attempted to remove AS4.1, shutdown, re-install, shutdown and attempted again to sync my phone -- nothing.
The only thing I think I should have done first is to sync the phone via the crade prior to using Vsync and am wondering if that is the issue. Tomorrow I am going to do a hard reset and sync then Vsync unless someone has any ideas.
jrapp, you tried to do what I put up in that link?
make sure you check every box.
if that still doesn't work, check firewalls, AV, VPN software, etc, to make sure it isn't blocking it (checking the boxes in my original instructions should fix this, but it couldn't hurt to double-check the programs themselves).

Yeah, clicked the link (thanks by the way) everythings checked. My only firewall is via Norton Antivirus and it says that it is configured to allow Activesync. No VPN or AV for me. Thanks for tryin' though.
Turn off the firewall (unplug your internet to make sure) and then try it. Even though it's configured, it still might be blocking part...

Does anyone know if the media syncing is working? I checked that option when I setup AS4.1 but the ActiveSync window says "Setup must be completed" next to Media. I click on the link, it sends me to Windows Media 10 Sync, but WM10 doesn't recognize my phone. I have a 1 gig Sandisk SD card. When I hit Explore, I can go to the SD card, but WM10 never recognizes it. Any answers?
Can anyone provide specifics on configuring the AVG Plus firewall?
I connect in active synch okay when I deactivate it, and I've allowed the applications refereced in the link provided. I'm a little unclear on how to get the ports opened. Firewalls are defitely a problem now if you are having trouble connecting.
Thanks for the help.
I'm going to browse the word doc some more to see if I can figure this out.
p.s. - I already like WM5 better and I haven't even loaded any apps yet.
HEY EVERYONE!!!
If Active Sync JUST HANGS on you... and you USE wireless sync.
Check your Wireless Sync settings!
You have to Enable Active Sync, after you install Wireless Sync
OR IT WILL NOT SYNC.

OK guys, I'm at a loss. Active Sync will connect and do the initial sync of messages and calendar. But it will not sync outside of the cradle. Emails come in and my 730 repeatedly tries to sync but keeps giving error code "0X80072EE2", which is a general failure code that the server cannot be found. I sat down with our Exchange server guru and looked over the server logs and it never sees me connecting except for when cradled. If I go into IE and go to mobile.mycompany.com/oma, I can log on and see my inbox on the OMA server and access it, just not wirelessly.
Like I said before, I have installed AS4.1 and cannot sync through USB. IR works just fine, but not USB. I am not connected through a hub, I have reset multiple times, nothing.
Anyone else having this issue? Mrailing? Superdave?
For those of you having trouble syncing your "new" WM 5 I730, you are not alone. This problem is well documented in several Pocket PC user forums, most notably, the aximsite.com at
There is also a faq on Microsofts pocket pc site.
To make a long story short, you have to make sure your firewall software recognizes and allows all the subcomponents and ports of AS 4.1. Depending on your firewall software, the procedure can be a little different, but the bottom line is the same. This can be very difficult in a IT controlled networked environment. I have not been able to convince our IT folks to open one of the necessary ports, thus I have to continue to use IR syncing for my x51v and my T-Mobile SDA. This is the main reason I have not done the upgrade to my i730.
I just entered the web address of our OWA web server plus my logon in the ActiveSync 4.1 setup and I was off and running except TASKS aren't synching. A new task created does not upload. The box is checked by Task under the listing of Exchange Server folders. Unchecking it, synching, rechecking synching, nutt'in.
