SD WM5 - SBS 2003 Certificate Activesync

Hey everone...

Has anyone figured out how to use Activesync with SBS 2003 Exchange Server SP2?

We did not purchase a cert, we are simply using the SBS 2003 provided cert. I am not able to install the cert on my phone. I searche the server for *.cer and found sbscert.cer and copied it to my phone (after upgrading to WM5) and it says "Cannot Access Certificate" when i click on it from my phone. Any ideas/input. I have not set this up before and I am anxious to see how pusing works with WM5 and Exchange 2003.

Thanks!!

I have been searching for quite awhile and everything they suggest isn't working... I think that these phones will only accept 3rd party certificates. Mine does not seem to be accepting the self signed cert that Small Business Server creates.

Here is a link to an article I found. If any of you try it and it works for you, please let me know how you managed to get it to work.

Success for me...

I used this reference last night...

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=841060

It refers to SmartphoneAppCert.exe but my limited understanding is that WM5 uses a similar security model to the smartphone and so I tried it and it was able to import our internally generated cert.

I'm syncing now via Activesync and happy!

Good luck!

Where did you put the certificate on your phone? When I try this, I keep getting a "certificate cannot be found" error.

You have to create a folder on your PocketPC called "Storage" and put the cert there. This is were that software will look for the cert. The M$ KB article has the details as far as where the folder needs to be placed on your phone. I think it was the root directory.

I still had a problem importing our internal certificate, but I found that if you go to any computer and go to your company's secure website you can export the certificate to a file and use that file to import into your phone. This worked for me.

Thanks for the reply - I probably should have figured that out from the instructions . But, in the meantime, I found a method that worked for me - turning the .cer file into a cab file, as explained here: http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2006/01/28/making_a_root_cert_cab_file.aspx. This gets around the permission problem with installing a .cer. It might be a useful technique for others.
