Talking MRailing i730/i830 Setup Guide Questions and Comments Thread

Well my Ubber i730/i830 guide is currently in the making found in the sticky area in the i730/i830 forum or here:

http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/showthread.php?p=486607

The Guide will remain closed due to updates and, hopefully, contast additions. This guide is a supplemental to the FAQ, and contains a lot of information already in the FAQ, but should be a good Newbie guide/setup guide. I don't mean to play it off as a Newbie Guide, it really should contain information that ANYONE can benefit from, including myself. I plan to use it each time I hard reset, and update accoridingly. I do hard reset occasionally because of software changes/updates, and just because I like a fresh device.

Please use this thread to discuss the guide, make comments, ask questions, etc. I appreciate feedback too, and of course if you find spelling corrections (there is a lot of text there) report those as well (I will probably delete your reply after fixing that problem to keep this thread somewhat easy to follow). I will leave both positive and negative feedback as well as other suggestions.

NOW LET ME STATE THIS, THIS IS MY SETUP. I know there are LOTS of other very good items that COULD BE included and other hacks that CAN BE used, but this is what I am doing and the Setup Guide is NOT meant for every hack under the sun. I read the i730 forum constantly, and if something catches my eye and I use it, I will add it. If you have a suggestion for something for me to try, then PM me and I will try it, and if I like it I will add it to the Guide. Use this thread for questions or clarifications to the guide, not for additions to it.

The guide is currently a work in progress and I will be working on it some over the next week or so, work permitting.

Thumbs up Thanks!

Michael,

So far, I've only had time to skim what you've written to date; however, I want you to know that I really, really appreciate your approach. Although I've been using my i730 for about 5 months now (and previously used an iPAQ 3845 for 4-5 years before that), I still consider myself to be somewhat of a newbie. Consequently, I find your step-by-step approach extraordinarily helpful. You should get a job writing the instruction manual for Verizon/Samsung.

I hope to have more time soon to go back and read the set-up guide in more detail. When I do, if I catch any typos, I definitely let you know. In the meantime, please keep doing what you're doing!

Jay

I'm embarrassed that I forgot that part. Thanks, Wodin, for remembering to thank Michael for his hard work. And, thank you, Michael, for your hard work and seemingly tireless efforts to help the rest of us. Please know that they do not go unnoticed.

Oh I have the disclaimer on there not to reproduce this information....

Thanks guys, appreciate the props. It's coming along slowly. There has been a lot of work in there now. Finally to the Hacks section... The next ones are going to take me a while to type.....

Wow

Just a few weeks ago I followed your old guide and used it as a template to backup my phone. I really appreciated that effort and just wanted to check in and see the updated version. WOW, I must say you went all out and it is awesome...thanks very much for taking the time to write out the process in such lengthy terms...noobs like myself are very indebted to you.

Thanks!

Hopefully you can learn something from it and be able to use your phone a little better. Glad the information was helpful and your first post was a thank you.

Enjoy.

Question on Date Hack details

First - great work Micheal!

Second, you asked for questions here, so here is the first one I have after following your setup guide. Under the portion regarding regedit and the few hacks you recommend, the hack under item "2" is to add the date to the time on top of the Today screen. the new string value is "TBOpt" but what is the value? It appears to be "a:" but there is a random "3" on the next line. Should it be "a:3" or "a 3" or simply "3" or some other combination?

Sorry, I guess I'm a dunce. I've tried all of these and still can't get the date on my screen under the time.

Finally, in the section regarding the internet cache, you sometime refer to safestore vs Safestore - does it matter if the name is capitalized? Sorry - I just want to be certain.

Again, really nice work and a big THANKS!

****ON EDIT****

Though I'm tempted to delete this question (Michael may do so anyway) I'll leave it for others.

I just figured out the value should simply be "3" and the colon in the setup guide was the mistyped key.

That's why they are on separate lines.

The Name of the Value is "TBOpt" and the actual value is "3"

--------------

safestore = Safestore = SafeStore

No matter how it's listed, it's all the same.

If I had read the entire setup guide in one sitting, this would have been very clear. Unfortunately, I was interrupted many times with "family" issues, so I read the guide at various points from Friday night to Sunday night.

In any case, the directions are very clear in the section describing in detail the registry hacks (near the begining of the guide).

However, the wording is different and somewhat confusing (perhaps only to me) in the section near the end of the guide labeled useability.

Regardless, great guide - Many thanks!

**PATH Not Working!

Numerous probs over last 2 mos-2nd I730-Email tags not working, ie when "mark for D/L", was outa sync. finally figured that if I synced before a new mail came in to the POP server, it'd work.
In the process I sent it back to Samsung, and besides checking it to tell me that "I'm the ONLY one in the WHOLE World with this problem", they upgraded the software to yh25
Sooooooooo now I'm in a hotel in LA, I try to set up as a USB Modem, I dial ** PATH, (**7284), and NOTHING, NADA, ZIP! No data connection screen, just sits there! Please, any ideas?

Search, this is discussed in the Guide, and the Difference thread (Difference between YH25 and YE05), as well as MANY other threads. It's much easier to search first before PM someone, or posting here.

I have tried to do this several times and something must be wrong. I am positive I have set the "TBOpt" value to "3", but only the date shows. Worse yet: it truncates the day part, so March 11th shows up as "3/1". I have no other software that I think could affect things. I run:

Phonehelper
MultiIE
DoubleLauncher
PocketInformant
Calendar+

Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong or how to fix this? Thanks in advance.

Click and Hold on the clock, and then click Digital.

mike-

I had this problem with your first guide and since its still a problem ill bring it up. When i apply your reg hack for moving ringers to safstore, it does not work. The phone simply uses the default ringtone no matter what i do until i remove the reg hack. I followed the instructions exactly and everytime i cannot get it to work. Any ideas?

Also, I know you dont use tomtom or navigation with your i730, but i think adding the createports.exe to your pack would be useful and is another necessary tool that samsung left out of the phone on release.

On that note, I have another question. I formatted safestore and did a hard reset this weekend. I was puzzled when i reinstalled tomtom to notice all of my previous locations were still there along with all of my preferences. Im not sure how this is possible since i erased everything, and i always install tomtom to main memory since it runs best there. Any clue as to how prefs and destinations were somehow saved?

This has been an issue for a few people, and I think it's because I do all my ringer assignments with Photo Contacts Pro. That program sets them up, including my default ringer, so that's why I don't have problems with the ringers as others are reporting.

I will add it to my notes to change in the guide and adjust that setting.

I will most likely add the createports.exe file to the tools pack, as well as some other items I have. Most likely in Mrailing Tools Pack V2.

OK, so I guess I'm one of the few that have this problem. The next question is - how do I change it back? I like the extra main memory space, but want to be able to change the ringer. Can someone give me the original registry entry? I think the value was just "\windows\ringers" but I'm not sure.

Also, I guess if I just plan to use the same ringer all the time, I could change the default ringer in the registry (same HKCU location as the ringers if I recall) to the "old style" ringer I like.

To change it back i just removed the \safestore\ringers value and soft reset the phone.

When you reinstall TomTom do you have to register it again?
Do you have to get a new code?
Any problems reinstalling it?
