Yeah, I was told end of February too, but I came back to let everyone know and MRailing locked the thread. Apparently quite a few people are still pissed off over the i700 thing...
Anyhow, I think WM5 is a free topic and nobody should be locking it now, because its coming, and sooner than you think.
Yeah, I was pretty excited to see this too, especially since (as has been reported before) it's gonna have AKU 2 also (push email, stereo bluetooth). But it's not WM 2005, it's WM 5.0. The fact that devices have been released in 2006 running an OS called WM 2003 gives some indication as to why Microsoft changed their naming scheme.
That information is nothing new. You have to remember that site reported the Q was getting canceled. I had to clear the air about that one since he was getting flamed and gave him some other tidbits. Which he decided was rumour worthy to post on his site.
Yeah, I got the alert from google early this morning about this (i have google setup to send me alert emails on the i730/i830 and 700w) and thought it was pretty interesting.
And... this was one intersesting quote from that article:
"Interestingly Samsung Pocket PC phones will get upgrade to windows Mobile 5.0 and it will be only owners of HTC made phones powered by Windows Mobile 2003, that will be left without such upgrade."
Looks like only us lucky ones with i730/830 will get it!
First of all, I mean no disrespect to MRailing at all, he does an awesome job keeping this place in shape, and the FAQ rocks! So if I came off that way, I am sorry!
As for the upgrade, I have both confirmed with my Data services contact, and now with two VZW employees on another forum that the end of February is the go date as of now for this upgrade. The i830 will recieve the upgrade in June... ugh.
Anyhow, if all goes well, we should be hacking away at WM 5 within a few weeks!
Yeah, and as for msmobiles.com ... take anything with a grain of salt.
I am playing with an xv6700 today, and I can say I do like the look and feel of WM5 so far. We have some people that are running scared from Blackberry's so this should be an interesting experiment.
I can say that this little device is tempting, but with WM5 and AKU2 the only thing that really is enticing is the "thingy that takes pictures"
If the rumors are true and WM5 upgrade is comming out at the end of the month or sooner that would be great. Now the only thing the i730 is missing is a camera! I dont care if it's crappy, they come in handy. that 6700 is tempting but doesnt seem to be nearly as cool as the i730.

I agree IN BOTH ways
He does a LOT of work here that is to be commended... AND I DO!
On the other hand, he is the most lock happy mod I have seen in all of the internet x 100.... and I belong to a good few forums.
What is so bad about talking about something more than once? The information keeps changing anyways. WAY TOO much censorship with that dang lock button here.
That upgrade sounds like a nice chunk of bennies but I hope it does not make the phone buggy like the I700 upgrade did to some. I assume we are going to lose everything on the upgrade... re-flash right? Going to have to re-install everything from scratch. Sure would be nice if they could make it an "upgrade" version of install instead of from scratch... all those settings and installs to lose really bites but it is the price of being a geek
No one tethers on this site. We just like to know how to do it.
So yes I am in this boat but I dont tether.
Ditto. Although PDAnet has already released a solution for the 700w which runs wm 5. While a hack is always preferable, both financially and from a geek cred standpoint, if it comes down to a choice between a hacked i730 running 2003 or a wm 5 version + $35 add on for tethering (which I will then never use, of course), I will choose the latter. Not even close.
well, since i'm guessing that there will be no way to go back to v2003 once having installed 5.0 . . .
. . . i'm going to have to ask one of you brave early adopters to run up to handango and install the trial version of "APL" and tell me if it works . . .
. . . i run some options trading software on the phone as a backup should the office desktop and/or office Internet go down; and i can't afford to have APL not run on the phone
WM 5.0 sounds great except if it limits the ability to use the phone as a BT or USB modem. I *hope* these features are not locked with the OS upgrade!
I wouldn't upgrade in that circumstance either, unless there was a viable program like PDAnet available (I have used their stuff with the treo DUN and it works great).
Other concern I have about the upgrade is that I understand you are forced to upgrade Activesync as well, and the latest version of activesync doesn't allow you to sync (to your own main PC) wirelessly. I love being able to sync from anywhere in the house to the pc with the primary partnership and don't want to lose this feature.

There have been a lot of complaints about this. I'm sure this feature will be reenabled in a future version. In the meantime, you might be interested in mobile Plaxo from Webis http://www.pocketinformant.com/Forum...showtopic=8463 This could be a good stopgap.
