Howdy,

I'm using my I730 to almost totally run my business ...

I use HanDbase to create databases that do almost everything that my work computer did (sales tax, payroll, inventory, service scheduling, accounts payable and receivable and many others ... about the only thing it won't do is answer the store phone for me ... yes I know ... I could forward the store phone to my cell ... but ... the phone company is pretty proud of that service

This same data base acts as my check book register (easy access for the check card use too), I keep data bases on dvd's, cd's, audio books, pocket ebooks, vehical logs and just about anything else I can catagorize

I read ebooks, listen to audio books, and watch video ..

I use the Fedex and UPS programs to track packages ..

I used to use Mapopolis for GPS use ... but I've found the Garmin Quest much more functional ... especially since I can mount it in the truck and on the Harley and still get audio prompts ... without doing the BT toggle thing

I've disposed of the home phone line entirely ... even though the area I live in does not have dsl, I just use the I730 to access the internet via my laptop ... both blue tooth and usb (depending on where I am)

About the only thing this phone doesn't do for me is take pictures ... but ... we're not supposed to mention the "C" word

Fuzzy

"Buying movie tickets online, from the line, when the line at the theater is ridiculous. Not really a trick, just a cool use of the technology. Always amazes your friends."

..stumbled upon this tread via search, but this has to be the greatest use ive heard yet.. good work

  • I use my i730 to connect to ORB and watch live TV, record it, listen to some of my 13,000 MP3s on my home computer in the car or on the go, and watch movies.
  • I control my Winamp through the net, definitlly a hit at parties.
  • Listen to shoutcast.
  • Play NES games while in class (definitlly a distraction). http://sourceforge.net/projects/pnester/ You have to use the on screen controls for A and B because you can't press 2 hardware buttons at once on the i730. And of course you have to actually own to game to play legally
  • I use google local to find where I am going ( http://www.google.com/xhtml ), definitlly helps out because it give a small map and a phone number link so you can click the link and call.
  • Again use (http://www/google.com/xhtml) to search movie times, try doing the movie name and the city, state or zip code or just type movies and the city, state or zip code.
  • I guess thats it for now, I will add more later.

Check this out:

also the emulator is ok to talk about, but games are copy protected, so they need to stay off of here... Just and FYI.

Three IT geeks sitting at a bar drinking beer, connected to the office network through VPN and using PC-anywhere (and VNC) to mess with co-workers on night-shift by subtly changing things on their systems at work.
Man, this phone is a load of fun at times

My favorite thing recently about this is getting software for my hacked Tivo to make it easy to transfer movies/shows to a pocket pc sized video. I transfer around 5 shows a day automatically and then just copy them over as needed to have something to watch.
Mrailing...I have DirecTV Tivo and would like to pull the recorded show down also, but, my USB port (Phillips DVR700([?] I think) is disbaled. Do you have steps on how to enable it for file transfers? I've been looking everywhere on how to do it, but, seems a little over my head. Is there an easy method that does it for me?

Hope your up for some reading:

http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...d.php?t=265929

That will make it happen. And as I have said in the past, it's not something to do on a whim. Read as much as you can, and once there go to the newbie forum and read. Trust me, read FIRST, then read some more, and some more. Don't ask questions unless NO ONE has asked. You guys thought we were tough.

Those instructions will take a Series 2 DirecTV Tivo to a Hacked version and from there, you can run TyTools, found at Deal Database and extract videos from the Tivo.

Do a search on Tivo in this Forum. I have discussed this before.

That should get you started. If you are still completely lost, PM me, and I will try to help you a little. This is a big thing and there are two great forums for the hacking process, but I can at least get your toes wet...

I use my i730 to control/troubleshoot all my work network computers, home computers and relative's computers. Instead of using Terminal Services built into the i730 that can only control computers running WindowsXP Pro (not Home or Media Center), I use z2 Remote2PC and love it. Super quick screen draw, it doesn't blank out/log off the end users computer, multiple zoom levels, etc... amazing program. The best part is that once you buy a license for your i730, you can install the control program on an unlimited number of desktop PC's. The responsiveness and the screen graphics transmission from the remote desktop is so quick to appear on the i730 screen that I no longer use the internet browser in my phone. I access the internet on my phone through my home computer. I control my home computer and use it's much faster download connection and faster cpu for browser window rendering and zip what my home computer screen is showing straight to my phone. Not only can I render internet pages and view them at the high speed as if I was sitting at my home computer, but because I am using my home browser, I no longer get incompatibility issues that some sites have when they don't recognize the various pocketPC browsers.

I think you answered your own question. You can find info on how to do just about anything that can be done w/your i730 by searching in this forum.

I know I can search, but what are my options? I guess I should just look for a software company and see what is out there.

funeralplanner (my father-in-law is a retired undertaker - he loves "six feet under"),

Tell us what you want to do and we'll help you figure out how to do it, or where to search to learn.

Jim,
I work for a couple funeral homes. Mainly I work pre-need with insurance and such. So I use my contact list, notes, and calendar a lot.

That is a good show. I get asked a lot if I like it.

I could use something that I could program for age, and funeral cost for payments. That would come in real handy. Or really any business software.

Do you use quickbooks? if so (or even if you don't, actually) Lowfat Invoice is pretty awesome. In conjunction with a portable IR printer, it negates the need for me to carry a laptop for invoicing or estimates from the field. It really impresses the customers. They offer a free trial, too http://www.lowfatsoftware.com/

Wow, that looks cool. I have a communications biz that I've had for 13yrs or so on the side. That could come in real handy.

For tasks like that I usually use spreadsheet software. Pocket Excel, that comes with PPC 2003 might do the trick. But, I found that I needed something more robust so I use Planmaker by Softmaker: PlanMaker. The Desktop-Class Spreadsheet for Your Pocket PC.

Some of my uses

Email w/attachments via wirelesssync is the killer app for me. I receive my faxes via email & mark for download to read on the road. (Need Adobe Acrobat Reader installed - I prefer this to Picsel browser though there is a thread somewhere in here that illustrates how to use Picsel also). I have a flash drive that uses the SD card for storage/card reader. Often use acrobat writer on laptop to prep & easily attach & send docs from SD card. When on the road & need to send docs this is often faster than tethering laptop via usb bluetooth adapter or via usb cable to send attachments.

MSVoice command voice activated dialing while on the road.

Tethering for laptop internet access via after market usb cord I like (because it charges phone at the same time) to give laptop internet access while on
the road...(my laptops wif card broke...and since EVDO I haven’t missed the card.)

iGuidance bluetooth GPS navigation while driving w/BT-338. This ROCKS by the way - highly recommend the BT-338 with excellent battery life & signal sensitivity.

GPS Tuner - gps plot of current location on aerial photos in real time on the road (i.e. Google earth pro but on i730) thru menu option to terraserver over internet via EVDO. (tho lately I've had a glitch here so good luck...on your own....)

Phatnotes as a notes replacement to track everything. Everything. Clients, meeting notes (Can type fast on keyboard etc.) Highly recommended.

Logmein.com to control home computer & laptop & troubleshooting of various friends & families computers from i730.

Personal video player functions are great. I keep a couple kids shows on my card for emergencies w/the kids (traffic jams etc). Also watched the whole 1st season of 24 on the i730 - during plane rides etc. I transfer DVD's to SD card via pocket DVD studio. Also TV from TiVo comes wirelessly thru TiVo-to-go & encoded for i730 w/Windows Media Player 10 (which seems to encode vid very crisp @ small size too).

TCPMP is great for viewing divx or xvid encoded files, btw. Networked streaming works well also. TCPMP is also good for listening to audio (books/scriptures) in 2x speed.

Streaming audio (music & scriptures) & movie trailers & TV stations on occasion from sites listed in this forum. I use GSPlayer & TCPMP.

Also family pics & videos transferred from camcorder.

Networked folder support via wifi w/ Resco File Explorer (highly recommend) often eliminates need to transfer files manually. Also zipped file support is very handy for downloads.

Wifi/phone hack to browse network via wifi & still be available on phone @ same time.

HP10b financial calculator emulator for financial calculations.

Bluetooth audio hack to listen to audio via bluetooth headset.

Replacement remote for when TiVo remote disappears. Also great for scheduling TV shows to record on home TiVo via internet @ on home tv.yahoo.com or tivo.com.

Text messages are great w/the free 2000 & the slide out keyboard.

Spreadsheets & MS Office functionality.

Astronavigator & bluetooth gps is cool to see constellations in sky. Use internet for background stories of constellations.

E-books & audio books w/Microsoft Reader. Free MS Word plug-in to convert docs to Reader format. Better than paper as its always with you.

Download podcasts of NPR nightly news & tech w/Smartfeed podcast program (though I can’t 'paste' urls in to manually add feeds so i'm looking for new program).

Receive assigned Tasks via email thru Outlook.

Resco Audio explorer to record talks/voice mails/kids sayings to email/archive.

Agile messenger for IM programs (yahoo) to keep in touch w/family while away from computer.

Skype over EVDO works ok for communicating w/family overseas.

Yanceyware for all scriptures, study aids & congregation info at fingertips.

I'm sure I've forgotten things, but this device has almost replaced my laptop except for long word processing & in depth financial spreadsheets.

While this device is not perfect, add-on's like phonehelper etc make this a GREAT device. Seems every week or so I come across something new.
MOST of these uses & troubleshooting & functionality have been tips from this forum. Thanks to the mods & all contributors.

I can monitor our nanny cam's from the road. It requires a little bit of work but it is cool. The real challenge is doing it with sound!

Method 1, no sound (cost of camera and low cost software)
Step 1 is getting your standard webcam on your home network (check compatiability with software below)
Step 2 get view commander software from http://www.ivimg.com/ and install on your i730
Step 3 From your home network you can access the webcam video only via the IP address and port through wi-fi. This does require a login and password.
Step 4 enable a dynamic DNS services like DYNDNS. Your home router should have this as an option built in. You'll now have to open the appropriate ports on your router and redirect incoming traffic to the right cam.
Step 5 punch in your domain and port into view commander, and eureka!

Method 2, sound, requires no new software on your phone
Step 1 is getting your standard webcam on your home network (check compatiability with software below)
Step 2 Purchase NetCam Center from www.webcamsoft.com (bit pricey)
Step 3 Install netcam center on a PC in your home with a fixed IP address
Step 4 following the directions in netcam center, link the software to your webcam.
Step 5 enable streaming in netcam center for that webcam.
Step 6: You can now view via wi-fi your cam using the computers IP address in IE, or you can put in the computers IP address and the streaming port into windows media player and get picture and sound!
Step 7 enable dyndns as above
step 8 open the ports on your router to your computer that hosts the software.
Step 9 view your webcams via IE for picture or media player for picture and sound!

Have fun!
