I thought I read somewhere that you could get a lot of text messages (essentially for free) if you purchased the data plan. I thought it was something like 2000 messages or something like that.
The reason I need that is because I plan to use the feature that uses SMS to get the phone to sync when it receives a message. I don't want to pay 1M just to get the messages when they're received.
I called VZW but the rep had no clue about what I was asking for.
Text messages are not included with a data plan. They are either purchased as a separate feature or paid for as you use them. I believe the "feature" you refer to that "uses SMS to get the phone to sync" is Wireless Sync. Those SMS messages will not cost you anything and you don't need a text messaging plan for them.

I believe he is planning on using the AUTD feature of Exchange Server 2003. If this is the case those sms messages will cost you. You will need to figure out how many emails you get in a typical month and then figure out if it is cheaper to get a text plan or go w/ a per sms fee.
You may want to consider that if and when (refer to all the speculation posts) verizon releases the WM5 upgrade we will be able to get a true push email without SMS. In which case, you may not want to be locked into a text plan that you don't use.

Good point--I'm not sure what service the OP is referring to. Regarding the text plans, those can be added or removed at any time with no affect on the existing contract agreement.
Ask to be transferred to the Data Support Team and mention to them you have an Exchange Server that's getting installed in your office, and your IT guy mentioned something about 2000 messages for exchange syncing on the i730.
The normal CS reps don't know anything about this device. Get Data support team on the phone, or search the forums for a direct number.

What kind of confirmation are you looking for? I have it... unless... maybe I have nothing better to do than make up fictional data plans and features. Next, I am going to stage a Lochness monster sighting.
well considering we had some lunatic on the forums tell me samsung offered to fix a scratched up i730 under their "one time cosmetic repair" policy that did NOT exist when i called to verify, i think confirming anything on these forums would be in good order... which mrailing already did on that post right before yours WITH steps on how to get it in details.... so next time either post with more detailed info and quicker or dont bother at all.

FYI. I didn't speak to the data dept or any special deparment, just the regular CS line. If you call and say "I want 2000 SMS messages for free 'cause I have a data plan" they will probably just laugh at you. If you ask for the "$0 2000 SMS PDA" plan, they can actually look it up and probably find it.

Im sorry, are you complaining that I freely gave you information that may help you, but it wasn't to your satisfaction or quality so I should work harder or go away?
OK, I toook fixn278's advice. I called VZW and asked for the "zero dollar SMS PDA Plan". With very little confusion the rep did a little mubling and then said OK, you're all set. I asked her about the $5 I've been paying for my text plan and she said she removed it. Thanks to all those that replied. That's what I needed.
I just called and was told by the data folks that SMS is NOT included in the plan. They said that the Wireless Sync sends a "SMS that is not recorded as such."

This is the case if you are using Wireless Sync without an Exchange Server. I believe the AUTD feature of Exchange Server needs the text messaging.
I use Wireless Sync by itself and never get charged for any text messages it uses.
Wireless Sync uses sms but it is like you calling #777 for data its a free call. This is totally different then using an MS Exchange server.
If you sync directly with M$ Exchange (which is more secure than wireless sync) you either need to have your phone connect manually or on a schedule or you can have the server use the AUTD (always up to date) which sends a sms to your phone and triggers your phone to start active sync.

Are you on an unlimited data plan? I am on the 10MB data plan. I wonder if they'll give the 2000 txt plan to me?
