Official Windows Mobile 5 OS Upgrade Information for the i730 - It's HERE

IT IS AVAILABLE!

Check the last post....

Since this gets asked almost daily, I thought a sticky was in order. Once more information becomes public this thread will be updated, and possibly unlocked. Only verified information will be posted here as we will try to keep many of the rumors to a minimum so you can get the information you want, and as factual as we can give it.

When is it available:

"Soon". "Any Day Now". Those are the responses I have received. It was delayed because of some issues on who was going to pay for "bricked" phones, and seems to be on a path for a release "soon".

Is it going to cost me and how do I get it:

In the past upgrades have been free and come directly from Verizon, since they service this phone. Normally any updates available for any phone are from the carrier.

Can I go back to WM2003 if I don't like it?

Probably not, as you would have to have a firmware file of the current OS to do it, so if you are unsure, and want to take the risk of upgrading, without all the new software being available for WM5, then do it, if not, wait a few weeks once it's released to do the upgrades?

Should I start another thread to discuss this?

NO, no, no, no, not yet. Once information is out it will be posted here, and this will be updated, or opened for discussion. If you look at the original release date thread 80% is ramblings and you can't get the information you want. Once information is more or less set in stone, or more information comes forward a thread will be opened for it. Right now our stance is to keep the threads closed on this issue until more information is available. If you have information that you got from a source you know, knows the information, then send it to a mod, like myself, and I/We will add it here. Let's try this approach for this release at least for the start of it, then we will open it for the landslide on comments and suggestions. This might help 90% of the same questions being asked....

Will WM5 support A2DP? What about AKU 2?

Looks like no. It's not included in the prerelease that we got a hold of for the SD WM5 update, and that makes it not look likely to be included in the official update. Ok, so it's natively supported, but SuperDave hacked A2DP, and you can install it and use it. Check out the SuperDave Sticky for links.

First reports of what WM5 is like on the i730

Read the forum. Many people are using the SD WM5 version, which is, or darn near close to the final release.

Where can I talk about or find out more up to the minute information?

This thread will be updated once accurate information has surfaced. To discuss more on WM5, check out this thread:

http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69612

Once the Official release has happened, this thread will be opened...

First Reports from a user with WM5 on the i730 (not me).

I just got off the phone with an individual with WM5 on their i730. Spent about 30 minutes talking about some of the differences. This person is involved in the Friendly User Testing going on right now, which is before the release of the WM5 to the general public. I have been asked not to mention the name as the person doesn't want a thousand questions dealing with WM5 or how they got it on the i730, so don't start asking. If you have legit questions, ask them here and I will see about getting them answered. But for the time being this should answer all of your "current" questions and then some...

Key Points:

1. WiFi and Phone work together at the same time out of the box. No hacks for this.

2. Looks like the Stereo Headphone profile IS listed under bluetooth when connecting and seeing the services listed. So AKU2 and A2DP...

3. Better amounts of memory then the 700w. More about this when I talk again, and get better figures. But like 40 for memory (RAM) and 50 for storage (Flash).

4. VoiceSignal 2.1 is on the phone.

5. Picsel Browser is on the phone.

6. Wireless Sync Client is available.

7. Tethering. There is an icon in the control panel for data connection, and the shortcut works. The person has NOT used tethering yet, but is testing, but it will let them switch between USB Modem and Activesync.

8. WPA profiles are listed under WiFi.

9. Home screen has a wireless connection manager to turn on/off WiFi and Bluetooth.

10. Samsung Launcher is still on the phone.

11. Mappings of the buttons have been changed because of the soft keys.

That's it for now. I will report back with more information. NO THIS IS NOT THE FIRST OF APRIL, SO THIS IS NO JOKE. I will see about getting some screen shots of the device and getting them posted here. From what I have been told, the WM5 on the i730 gives them the "WOW" factor.

I am going to continue to update THIS post with new information, so just remember post #566 and come here for the most recent information.

Expect more later.

I just updated the date of when it's suppose to be released in the first post in this thread. On April 19, I am going to open this thread and close the other rumblings thread.
