Function Check of Verizon Callback Number Function Please!
I'm using my i730 to replace my Phone/PDA/Pager. I'm a doctor, and for several reasons (habit mostly), the hospital nurses will undoubtedly just want to punch in a callback number when given my voicemail greeting.
I'm using Verizon, and the voicemail greeting gives the caller the option of punching "5" and then entering a callback number. The problem is that when I check this function, I get an SMS telling me "The contents of this message cannot be displayed."
From the caller's end, it appears all went well. From my end, all I know is that someone tried to leave me a callback number and I have no idea who (or which unit, or whatever).
Verizon is working on this, but so far, no luck. They've never heard of this problem before, which has me wondering if it's a firmware glitch in the i730. (I can envision no one testing such an "antique" function on such a "state-of-the-art" phone.) Can one of you folks using an i730 with Verizon check this out and let me know if it works for you?
Thanks everyone. Having established that the problem doesn't lie in the phone's firmware, it's obviously somewhere in Verizon's configuration here in this area (midwest). I'll keep working with them.
(And checking the caller log was an idea I already had. The problem is that every call from the hospital shows the hospital's main number on caller ID, so I have no idea which unit the call is coming from.)
Right now, the immediate fix is to use a customized voicemail message telling the caller to NOT use the #5 callback function, because it doesn't work, but that just takes more time before the caller can get to the voicemail record beep, and isn't a real elegant fix.
Sure. All I have to do is convince the nurse that she has time to sit down at a computer terminal, log into her hospital email, and send me a text message, while patients and families are complaining to administration that the nurse was just "playing on the computer" instead of answering their call bell.
I'm afraid this is a situation where politics and perception interfere with what might be an otherwise reasonable approach.

Shouldn't be that hard. Most nurses' stations have several PC terminals on a T1 line (fast access), and some places actually put PCs in the hall or in the patient's rooms. You can create a shortcut to vtext.com on the PC's desktop. I actually think that would be as fast or faster than the phone.
If you have stations where there is a clerk doing the data entry, paging, faxing, etc... all you have to do is show the clerk. A few cookies will go a long way in getting them to do it....(at least that is my experience with nurses/clerks in all the hospitals I have worked in )
I just tested the press 5 feature and I get the same error message "The contents of this message cannot be displayed" - I guess I will be reporting this to Verizon as well.
I am using the phone in Cedar Rapids, IA - midwest

I also experienced this same problem. It didn't bother me much, so I did not attempt to look into it anymore.
Sounds like they didn't provision your phone correctly. Call up tech support, asked to be transfered to the data support center and have them double check ALL codes on your account. Explain to them what's going on, and they can also double check your internet access as well.
