Narrowing in on the Wifi/Phone problem
Just wanted to post some progress. I've just about got this issue resolved. I can get them both going at the same time now. Just involves a registry change. The problem was related to the power management. Im still tweaking the settings, but, i'll post full details as soon as im done.

Ok, here are the details. Im still evaluating the effects.
You'll need a registry editor, phm regedit works great for me. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\Interfaces
Delete the 2nd key, it's name should be
"Power-Manageable NDIS miniports"
Now soft reset. After soft-reseting turn wifi on, then turn on the phone. If the phone is on the first time you turn on wifi it will turn off, just turn it back on once you turn on wifi.
..................................
You can also try renaming the interfaces folder to interfaces_bak and restarting. It should recreate the keys except the ndis one. Some have reported that it did not recreate the other keys, so I changed this post to delete the key instead.
..................................
To turn wifi back off use,
start>settings>connections>wifi>disable. The today screen icon will not let you turn if off. (Thanks, waltie)
You can also copy this shortcut to your phone to directly go to the settings.
wifi.lnk

Try deleting the second key. Should be called Power-Manageable NDIS miniports.
Renaming the folder just backed it up.

Yeah, the second key shouldnt be recreated. The folder would be if you could delete it, but, that key is what were trying to get rid of.
...
Wifi does turn off when you power off, just comes back on when you power back on. I'm sure I can get it fixed, this is just the start.

Dave,
It seems that I'm able to turn off wifi by using start>settings>connections>wifi>disable without soft reset

Nice, I had not tried that. All is good then. Now I just need to write a better today screen plugin.
