This set of instructions will help Windows XP users connect the i730 to a laptop or desktop through USB (either the cradle or aftermarket USB cable) and obtain Internet access through Verizon's Data Plans.
Note that if you do decide to use this it will charge you for the time based upon your current data plan, so if you "Pay as you Go", then you will be charged per KB, and remember using a computer allows a lot more items to be used, thus using more bandwidth. If you use the "Pay as you Go" plan, I would not suggest using this, also if you have the limited plan (10-20MB plan), then I would again recommend you not use this.
However the unlimited plan will not incure anything above your current price. Also note that Verizon does not provide support for this, nor do they condoan it.
Now since it comes up quite often, after you have done this hack your phone will stay in USB Modem mode, and you will NOT, I repeat NOT, be able to use ActiveSync until you change the phone back to ActiveSync Mode ("Internal Data Call"). So after you get finished online and wish to sync again, dial the **PATH, and switch back to "Internal Data Call". Then when you want to use the USB Modem again, you dial **PATH and choose "As the modem through USB". Also the YH25 version of the phone, and SD WM5 versions of the phone **PATH no longer works, it's now **UPATH. Also with SD WM5, there is a Data Connection shortcut in the Settings menu under the System Tab that does the same thing as **UPATH.
DO NOT HOOK UP THE PHONE TO THE COMPUTER UNTIL PROMPTED.
Download the driver software from Samsungs web site directly. Or click here to get it as a ZIP file without having to use Samsungs Extraction program.
Double click on the file you DL from Samsungs web site (icon looks like an egg)
You will see a dialog box that has a bunch of buttons with question marks on them.
Click the bottom left button. This extracts the installation files to a folder. Ignore the error messages by clicking the Ok button.
Go into the folder it creates.
Double click on setup.exe and go through the installation.
On your i730 bring up the phone dialer and enter **PATH (**7284).
On the following screen click As the modem through USB.
Now plug in the i730 to your computer with the supplied USB cable.
After the modem is detected you should see it in the device manager as SAMSUNG CDMA Modem.
Go to Network Connections and click Create a new connection.
Click Next on the New Connection Wizard.
Select Connect to the Internet and click Next.
Select Set up my connection manually and click Next.
Select Connect using a dial-up modem and click Next
Type in a name for your ISP and click Next. I used VerizonWireless.
For the phone number enter #777 and click Next.
For the username put in your ten digit mobile phone number before the @vzw3g.com.
Password is vzw.
It is helpful to save the username and password so check off the first selection box.
I chose not to make this my default internet connection so I did not check the second selection box.
Click Next
Click on Finish
Now bring up the VerizonWireless (if that is what you named it) connect window. If you chose to make a shortcut on your desktop you can double click that to bring it up. It will be in the Network Connections folder as well. Click Dial.
You will see the connection being established.
If everything goes well you will see the following ballon window.
Double clicking on the connection will bring up the Status window. You may disconnect by clicking on the Disconnect button.

You'll need a registry editor, phm regedit works great for me. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\Interfaces
Delete the 2nd key, it's name should be
"Power-Manageable NDIS miniports"
Now soft reset. After soft-reseting turn wifi on, then turn on the phone. If the phone is on the first time you turn on wifi it will turn off, just turn it back on once you turn on wifi.
..................................
You can also try renaming the interfaces folder to interfaces_bak and restarting. It should recreate the keys except the ndis one. Some have reported that it did not recreate the other keys, so I changed this post to delete the key instead.
..................................
To turn wifi back off use,
start>settings>connections>wifi>disable. The today screen icon will not let you turn if off. (Thanks, waltie)
You can also copy this shortcut to your phone to directly go to the settings. I put mine under windows\start menu, so that when I click start its right there on my list. However, you can also copy it to windows\start menu\programs if you want. It's a shortcut so it is really just a preference of where you want it.
Also if you are on a phone call and try to enable WiFi, it will drop your call because the phone will turn off EVERYTIME WiFi is turned on.

Use the stylus to push in the "reset" button on the bottom left of the phone.
To perform a Hard Reset For WM2003:
While holding down the power slider switch on the left side of the phone, push the soft reset button. This will reset the phone to factory settings, but will NOT reset the information in SafeStore.
To perform a Hard Reset For WM5 (i730 and i830w):
The hard reset procedure has changed. Press and hold down the menu button (top left button above the calendar button) & hold down the slider, and press the soft reset button (KEEP HOLDING DOWN THE MENU BUTTON AND THE SLIDER EVEN AFTER PRESSING THE RESET BUTTON). This will reset the screen and you should now see a "Formatting Root..."
In the case of the i830w, the procedure is the same, but instead of the menu button, you have to hold down the top left soft button, with the dot/dash on it, which is above the calendar button, but the rest of the procedure is the same, and you must keep holding down the button and the slider even after pressing the reset button.
DISCLAIMER before hard reset
As a side note, before doing any Hard Reset, and if possible, do a last sync of the i730. This will sync the information between the i730 and the computer. Also make sure you have any registration numbers used on the phone when buying software. Create a list of software you have installed and the location. You also might think about cleaning and removing all files from SafeStore, which you can find instructions in the list on top of the FAQ. When reinstalling everything, write down the order you are installing and where you are installing, in case you have problems, then you can either install in a new location, or remove the troubled software from the i730.

It has been reported and discussed that there is play, wiggle, movement in the slider of the phone. It gets a little lose over time, but still seems to not cause any problems.

The i600 and i700 data cables and power cables WILL work with the i730. It has the same connector on the bottom and uses the same voltage.
The headphone jack on the side however, seems to take a longer adapter than the i600 and i700 when using a converter for full size plugs. You will need to buy a new converter for the headphone jack.

This will make a change to the DEFAULT location that Activesync will install files. Do this only if you want BY DEFAULT, everything to prompt you where you want it to be installed, instead of the software installing to the default location. If you want to manually choose the location as to where Activesync will install software, when prompted if you want to install the software to the default location, click NO, then it will ask where you would like to install the file. If you make the following registry change, it will switch Activesync from installing to Main Memory by default to Safestore. As a side note, some software completely screws up the phone when you install it to Safestore (PhoneAlarm does this as an example). So use this ONLY if you want to do this, otherwise, skip this.
1. Using a registry editor, go to \HKLM\SOFTWARE\Apps\Microsoft Application Installer\
2. Change the value of fAskDest to 1.
3. Create a folder called Program Files in SafeStore.
4. Do a soft reset.
5. Open ActiveSync on your Desktop PC, then go to Tools -> Add/Remove Programs. Uncheck the "Install program into the default installation folder" option.
Next time you try installing something, you will be prompted for the install location.
Disclaimer Be care making changes in the registry. You are doing this at your own risk.

voicesignal.exe
This puppy is 5.5K, and goes in /Windows
voicesignalkeymapper.xml
This file goes in /Windows, use it to specify what app to launch (default is Voice Commander)
As a side note, just edit voicesignalkeymapper.xml and you will be able to point to any exe to run any file.

This program is now built in to the PhoneHelper program, so it is not a stand alone program any longer. You can still use the link specified in the "Download" area to get the PhoneHelper program with Numlocker built in.
Install
-there is no cab file yet.
-simply copy the exe to your device and run it.
-if you would like it to start each time your device is restarted, the ideal place to copy it would be to your \Windows\Startup folder
How To use
-Click on the exe. the app will start in the background
-If you have added the file to your \Windows\Startup folder, you can also do a soft reboot, and it should run once your device restarts.
-To activate NUMLOCK, double press your FN. An icon will appear at the top of the task bar indicating that NumLock is on. This icon will remain there for about 30 seconds. After that time, if there are more notifications available on the taskbar, it will be merged with them into the "bubble" (i am not sure you all understand what i mean by that, but if you dont, let me know and maybe i can put some screen shots up).
-To deactivate, double tap the FN key again.
-If NL is on and you click on the taskbar icon, it will show a notification bubble. if you further click on the "Show" button on that notification bubble, it will bring up the test screen. (I doubt many will have a need for this, but i left it in incase you want a way to turn off the numlock functionality manually)
Notes
-This version is not config driven...
-The delay between double tap is set to 400ms. To toggle NumLock, the time between double tapping should be less than 400ms.
-the time the icon spends in the taskbar is currently set to 30seconds. after that, it will be merged with the bubble, and when you click that bubble, it will be shown in the child bar that is displayed.

There are two ways to remove the
"Keypad Ready" screen.
1. Copy a 0k (blank file) named bigdialer.dll over the file in the windows dir and it will stop the "Keypad Ready" popup from appearing. You can also delete the inprocserver entry for it from the reg, which ever is easier. If you copy the file over and want to revert, just delete the copied over file.
2. Search the registry with any registry editor that you prefer for "bigdialer.dll" and delete the entry for it.
This will keep that screen from appearing when you have the Phone App open, and then Open the slider.
