A new version of PhoneHelper has been released and is available on Dimension's website (link below) and now contains the NumLocker program built in, as well as enhancements, like a program for making capital letters using a double tap of the key, instead of hitting the shift button.
This information will be left for information purposes, as well as the link to Dimension's webpage.
=============================
The new version (0.03) of this tool has been released.
Installation:
1. download PhoneHelper.zip
2. there are two files in the zip file: PhoneHelper.exe and PhoneHelper.exe.config
3. Copy both of these to the same folder on your device (i.e. /SafeStore/App/PhoneHelper)
4. On your device, click on PhoneHelper.exe file
Setup and Running:
1. When the app first start, you will be prompted to select a button to use for the Mute function. The default is the DPAD CENTER key.
2. Select a button or leave the default button
3. Click the Save button (you must click the save button or you will be prompted with this setup screen each time the app starts)
4. Once you click save, the settings dialogue will disappear and you are good to go. You will not be prompted to setup again...the app fill start "silently" going forth.
5. If the app works fine for you, you can create a short cut for PhoneHelper.exe and add to the startup folder so that i restarts automatically with soft resets.
Short Description
-use DPAD center key to close dialogues
-use DPAD right key to tab thru controls and DPAD center key to "click" a control
-use DPAD Center key to mute/unmute phone when Phone dialogue has focus. (you can click the Green phone button to bring it into focus).
Detailed Description: Dialogue Helper
-When a dialogue pops up, you can immediately dismiss by pressing the DPAD center key
-Or you can use the DPAD right key to toggle thru the clickable buttons, listview or combo boxes on the dialogue. Clicking the DPAD Center key when one of these controls have focus will "click" it.
-Volume Dialogue:
* toggle between "On", "Vibrate", "Off" using the DPAD right key. (you may have to click right twice initially)
* adjusting volume: use Up DPAD key to move to the "ON" option button. Push up once more. Now you can use the up/down DPAD or volume buttons to adjust the volume. If you need to switch between "on", "vibrate", or "off" again, use the DPAD right key (click right twice).
* press DPAD center key at anytime to close the dialogue
-Calendar
* use dpad right key to navigate thru buttons, list or combo box.
* when focus in on combo box, you can use the up/down dpad key to change snooze time. when you are finished, you can use dpad right key to continue to toggle thru the buttons and other controls.
* Note: when there are more than two calendar notifications, you can use the up/down key to navigate thru the notifications, and use the right dpad key to toggle thru controls (buttons, snooze combo box, or alert notifications). NOTE: when tabbing thru, you can set focus to the calendar events list box, but it may be difficult to tell when that control has focus, as there is no visible queue given. i may add a beep or color change later so that users will know when the control has focus.
Detailed Description: Mute
-not much else to add here..
-when the app first starts, you need to select a button to use as mute and MUST CLICK save.
-i have done most of my testing with the DPAD Center button. Use other buttons at your own risk...
-If you have an app mapped to a hardware button, that button will continue to work, EXCEPT when the phone screen is showing. At that point, phone helper will take over and use that button as the mute button. Once you close that screen, it's business as usual with those buttons (i hope).
Issues fixed from last version/New features
-issue: either get context menu key to work as mute button when an app is assigned to it or use dpad enter key as mute button when phone screen is showing and on a call status: fixed. you can continue to map the button to an app, it will only be overriden on the phone screen. additionally, i'll allow the users to select what button they want mute to map to (as some prefer the D-Pad center key.
-issue: problem where return (OK) key on keypad no longer works when in Pocket Word and some other editors. freddie discovered this to be a conflict with PhoneAlarm. i couldn't reproduce since i do not have phone alarm installed, but nonetheless, this new version may solve this issue.
-issue: make sure d-pad right key works on calendar dialogue when more than one event is displayed fixed. using the right d-pad button will allow you to tab out of the list view
-issue: d-pad right button doesn't work in Media Player: fixed. it appears if your d-pad right key is mapped to fast forward in Media player, for the current version of phonehelper (v0.02), this won't work. With the current unreleased version, i have corrected this.
-issue: when in a phone call, check to make sure volume buttons still work? non-issue? this is now working for the user (tange1) that reported it, so no action was taken.
-Added the ability to choose what hardware button will be used as the mute button. This was done based on user feedback: some preferred the DPAD center, while others liked the Context Menu button.

In this tutorial the author advises AGAINST using safestore to hold your cache -- but highly recommends using your SD card.
He states that SD cards can be faster than internal ram when optimized. Also, imbeded in this tutorial is a link to this second tutorial on optimizing your SD card.

The download in this post is from October 28, 2005. Newer versions will be updated, but to make sure you have the newest verison you can check the Support and Information thread below.
1. Download, then unzip the wlan.zip.
2. On the computer, copy and paste wlan.dll in the \windows directory of the phone.
3. Soft reset you phone.
Now WiFi and Phone will work at same time.

First create a GIF image 110 x 17 using your favorite image manipulation program. (110 x 17 pixels is the exact size of the Original Verizon logo, and your image can be different, but this is a good starting point).
Once the image is created save it as "carrierlogo.gif" (without the quotes).
Using Windows Explorer on your computer, copy that image into the \Windows directory on the i730, and say yes to overwrite the file on the i730.
Soft reset the phone and your image will now show up instead of the Verizon logo.
To replace the Verizon logo, delete the carrierlogo.gif image on the i730, and it will revert back to the Verizon logo.

There are a few programs that can change the look of the Dialer screen, but they do not change the color of the text on the buttons. To do this you must edit the registry and modify a setting.
This is the original thread, as well as containing information about chaging the overall look.
Standard disclaimer, do at your own risk, your will be changing the registry, and if you don't know what this is, find out first, cause you might be hard resetting your phone if you don't understand this.
Go to registry setting:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Color\
Make a new binary value, and name it "19" without the quotations. For the value, enter FF FF FF 00 if you want white. For other colors, you just need to find the hexadecimal equivalent of the color (blue is 00 00 FF 00).
Once the setting is made, soft reset the i730, and your settings will be active.

Since many servers will not let you send mail through their outgoing mail servers unless you have one of their IP addresses, or have some type of authentication, you need some way to do it.
Verizon has made an outgoing mail server available to you if you are connected to their 1x or EVDO networks, and possibly outside of their connections (for use over WiFi) since they use an authentication scheme, over the IP address authentication.
1. Go to vtext.com and create an account there. You must do this as it creates a data password used for authentication.
2. Sometimes after you have created this account, it could take up to 24/48 hours for their outgoing mail servers to get updated with your information, so be patient after getting this setup, it will eventually work.
3. Modify your mail settings and change the outgoing mail server to be:
smtp.vzwmail.net
4. You will need to modify the advanced settings and tell your mail account that the outgoing server requires authentication.
5. Enter the username and password for authentication as follows:
Use the password you setup with the Vtext.com account

Microsoft's Pocket Outlook client is not very full featured, and there are many other alternatives to it. One feature that many people find frustrating is the fact the Pocket Outlook (P.O.) cannot handle more than one account at a time.
Yes you can setup more than one account but P.O. can only send/receive one account at any given time. This account is dependant on which one is active (or last accessed). For example you have you "Home" account and "Work" account. You have clicked Messaging and clicked Home. Now you click Send/Receive and download your mail. You also setup a rule to check your home e-mail every hour. You now switch to the "Work" account and download that mail, and when finished close the Messaging program.
Now the rule you have for Home will not work as the last account accessed is "work", which means it's the active account, and the rule won't work.
So if you want one of your POP accounts to be checked via a Rule, it has to have been the last accessed account (including ActiveSync account), and then the rule will run.
Now if you want more than one account checked at any given time, please check out other e-mail programs, or use Wireless Sync.

Since this gets asked a lot I thought I would post this information in the FAQ.
The reason the phone does not automatically change time zones is due to the fact you have the ability to keep appointments on the phone. The phone has no way of knowing what time zone you put your appointments in, for example, you live in Eastern time, and you put a 5 AM meeting on your calendar for when you visit California, is that California time, or Eastern time?
What Microsoft did was put the ability to change time zones in the phone for the place you are visiting, and to make it easier, you want to put EVERYTHING on your calendar in the MAIN time zone you are always in.
So, you live in Eastern Standard Time Zone, and you put an appointment on your calendar for Noon, when you switch to Pacific time, it will now show up as 8 AM, which is when you really wanted it. This makes changing time zones very easy.
So put everything in your time zone, then just change the time zone when you travel and all the times will always be local times.
From what I have read Microsoft might be changing this in WM5 to have the ability to add time zones when setting appointments, but this is unconfirmed.

DISCLAIMER: Pocket PC Techs did not pay for this endorsement in this post. It is being posted because this is the first available adapter that is known to work perfectly for the i730. There might be other cables available when you read this, but based upon information posted in this forum on or before October 30, 2005, this is currently the best available product. By the time you read this, other products might be available, and some might be better/cheaper/etc.
For people that want to use an aftermarket set of headphones for listening to music or watching movies were out of luck with the default adapter cables that were available for previous models of Samsung phones (i700, i600). Seems that Samsung changed the type of connector that was on it, and caused a weird grounding issues.
Pocket PC Techs have since released an adapter cable specifically designed for the i730.

There are really two different ways to create shortcuts on the i730, or any Windows Mobile device.
Method 1, from the Phone
1. Click and Hold on a Program (the exe) and then select copy. (done on the phone)
2. Go to the directory that you want your shortcut pasted and then click and hold in the white/blank space in that directory.
3. An option for Create Shortcut will appear and you select that and you will have a shortcut to the program .
Method 2, From the Computer/placing parameters in the shortcuts
1. On the computer, open Notepad (or your favorite text editor, not Word or other Word Processors).
2. Type in this:
55#"\windows\file.exe"
Replace the stuff inside the quotes with the file you are trying to open and then save the file as *****.lnk This will create the shortcut file and just copy it to the phone and you will be able to open the software. If you need to include any parameters, place them after the end quote.
For example if you want a shortcut to the **7728 (**PATH) then you would type this in Notepad and save it as Path.lnk (like SD did for us):
55#"\windows\dataconnection.exe" Path

The i730 has many hidden codes that do some specific things on the i730, for example, **PATH on the dial pad enables/disables the ability to use the phone as a USB Modem (this is described in detail in another post).
Now some of these are described in detail in other posts in the FAQ, some aren't. This thread is to list the known codes and if you require more information, refer to the original SuperDave thread, look elsewhere in the FAQ, or search.
**492743 - Hybrid Mode ( Hybrid, EVDO, 1x)
**6738378 - Atempts to play a media file?
**8378 - Vibrate Test
#4357* - Device Info
**7284 - Data Connection Mode - Switch path to usb, interal, bt
**3863 - DTMF Test
**3228679 - System status with reset option
**3282 - Unknown?
**7738 - Mobile CAI Revision
**889 - TTY enable/disable
**772 - Service Mode
**3773867 - Unknown
47*68#13580 - Test Mode
*228 - Update PRL
*22899 - Update PRL and phone with no prompt

Since many posts are created on this topic, I thought a post with a compiled list of those threads might be useful.
There are at least a few external keyboard (mostly Bluetooth) that work with the i730. The keyboard for the i700 will not work with the i730, nor will the keyboard for the i600. No drivers are available for the i730 and that flexiable keyboard.
Please read these threads for people's suggestions and comments on aftermarket external keyboards:

The original thread started out talking about upgrading the RAM but then moves into the layout of the memory structure.
===========================
With the current setup of Windows Mobile 2003 SE OS, which is on the i730, this is the memory configuration you want.
Main Memory - You ONLY want to install apps here that don't work from SafeStore or Storage Card. You don't want to use this up as this is what keeps your phone running well. You also want to read other information on how to take care of it, like using MemMaid, or moving the IE Cache to SafeStore. This can be found elsewhere on the site. This memory is volatile, meaning if the phone loses complete power, it does a hard reset and you loose EVERYTHING installed here, stored here, placed here, etc. All gone.
SafeStore - This is flash based memory, meaning it's non-volatile, meaning if you loose power, you won't loose this information. This is very similar to a hard drive in a computer. You are still limited on the amount of stuff to store in safestore because of it's small size, but this is where you should install the MAJORITY of your software. 1. as long as you have between 10 & 20 MBs of remaining space in SafeStore your phone won't mess up. To install stuff here, refer to the instructions above.
Storage Cards - This is the SD card. You CAN install programs here, but if the card that has those programs is not in the card reader, then the phone can act very screwy. I prefer NOT to install programs to a SD card, as I change cards quite often, and I like not having to worry about which card is in the i730, and that I don't need a card at all.
Now when you install stuff to SafeStore, it WILL place shortcuts to those programs in Main Memory, and it WILL use Main Memory to RUN those programs, but those files are stored in SafeStore, and don't constantly take up space in Main Memory, only while they are running. This is ok, because shortcuts are small, and this is how it is meant to work.
Now I only have 1 program installed in Main Memory and that's phoneAlarm, because it doesn't work in SafeStore.
I have EVERYTHING else installed in SafeStore. This is where I tell all my programs to install by default. The only files I move to safestore manually is PhoneHelper (i730 hack) and my ringtones. I want these in safestore because I don't want to worry about them possibly not being on the card currently in the phone.
On the SD card I have my MP3 files, Movies, Word Documents, Excel Documents, Notes from the phone, Pictures, etc. All documents I create on the phone are on my SD cards, and any files I want to use on the phone are on the SD card. This is what I use to not kill Main Memory or SafeStore. Now I do have about 10 pics on SafeStore, but these are pictures I use all the times and I don't want to worry about which SD card I have in the slot (I have 1 - 1GB and 3 - 2GB cards).

This question is asked quite often, How do I assign my own ringtone to each caller?
Well the WM 2003 SE software does not have the native ability to have custom ringtones by caller, so you must step out to aftermarket software. Currently two different software packages are recommended by the users here:
PhotoContacts Pro - This software lets you assign ringtones by caller, or group. Also lets you assign pictures to incoming calls. Some say it's a memory hog, but that depends on what you have turned on in the software.
RingTonesX - This sofware is more basic and can assign ringtones by caller and group.
There are MANY threads dealing with discussions on the Ringtone software and Ringtone issue, please read these threads below:
This is the main thread that was started on this particular subject started back in June:

Many people have talked about the missing screw cover on the back of the phone, this is suppose to be missing. If you look at the top of the screw hole you will see that holes doubles as a place to put a wrist strap or other type of strap. Your phone isn't missing this because you lost it, it was never included on the phone in the first place.
